The Affordable Care Act and its unaffordable costs for human life

Speaking to an audience at Oxford University, Bishop Anthony Fisher of the Diocese of Parramatta, Australia, declared, "The elderly are not a problem, a market, a budget: They are real individuals, our own people, our ancestors, in due course-ourselves." It seems amazing that these words need to be spoken aloud, but Bishop Fisher was responding to a disturbing push by the British National Health Service (NHS) to withhold medical care from the elderly as a cost-cutting measure. [W]orrisome trends in Great Britain should serve as harbingers of things to come in the United States. The Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, is positioned to pursue this same path of healthcare rationing.

Second lawsuit filed against Planned Parenthood after woman dies during abortion
Chicago Sun Times
The father of a young child whose mother died after a July 2012 abortion filed a wrongful death lawsuit Thursday against Planned Parenthood of Illinois and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Tonya Reaves, 24, died July 20, 2012, at Northwestern Hospital after she began hemorrhaging at a Planned Parenthood clinic at 18 S. Michigan Ave., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. An autopsy found she died of a hemorrhage following a cervical dilation and evacuation performed during an intrauterine pregnancy, according to the medical examiner's office. Her death was ruled an accident. The lawsuit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, claims the clinic "improperly performed" the procedure and failed to properly care for her complications resulting in her death at the hospital. It is the second wrongful death suit filed on behalf of Reaves' estate. Reaves' mother, Dorsey Johns, filed a suit in Cook County Circuit Court in August 2012.

Pregnancy centers gain influence in anti-abortion arena
New York Times
With free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds, along with diapers, parenting classes and even temporary housing, pregnancy centers are playing an increasingly influential role in the anti-abortion movement. While most attention has focused on scores of new state laws restricting abortion, the centers have been growing in numbers and gaining state financing and support. Largely run by conservative Christians, the centers say they offer what Roland Warren, head of Care Net, one of the largest pregnancy center organizations, described as "a compassionate approach to this issue." As they expand, they are adding on-call or on-site medical personnel and employing sophisticated strategies to attract women, including Internet search optimization and mobile units near Planned Parenthood clinics.

Maternal health argument for abortion persists, despite evidence
C-Fam
Advocates for legal abortion in all circumstances continue to make their case in terms of reducing maternal mortality, despite a growing body of evidence showing that dramatic improvements in maternal health worldwide have been achieved without the liberalization of laws restricting abortion. In the November issue of the UK-based journal Reproductive Health Matters, two reports from Latin America and Southeast Asia illustrate this situation and reveal the frustration of pro-abortion groups seeking to exploit a diminishing crisis.
