84 year-old woman who had abortion 57 years ago still suffers depression

.- The weekly Catholic publication Alba in Spain has published the story of an 84 year-old woman who was forced by her ex-husband to undergo an abortion 57 years ago before they were married. She told Alba that despite the counseling she has received over the years, she has never been able to overcome her depression and was never able to carry a child to term.

OPERATION RESCUE NEWS RELEASE

Late-Abortions Plummet Nearly 30% in Abortion Capital
Total number of abortions also declines

TOPEKA, Kansas, March 31 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is reporting that the total number of abortions done in Kansas dipped in 2007, with the most remarkable decrease in late-term abortions. Those generally decreased by 23 percent while late abortions done after viability dropped 28 percent.

"We fully expected to see a dramatic drop in late-term abortions in Kansas due to the fact that late-term abortionist George Tiller closed his abortion mill to patients for a record 38 days last summer," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. "We believe that closure was a result of a number of factors, including pressure from pro-life groups and criminal charges that were unexpectedly filed against him by the attorney general's office."

"We strongly believe in the power of prayer, and last year Operation Rescue hosted three major prayer events outside Tiller's abortion mill prior to the closure," said Newman. "We also aggressively brought pressure on Tiller's abortion business through our tireless investigations, which have exposed what we believe is criminal activity committed by his abortion staff. We publicly released our information and reported it to law enforcement, the legislature, and other disciplinary groups."

However, the statistics also show an unfortunate increase in the number of abortions done on women who reside in other states. Operation Rescue attributes this increase to the recent closure of several abortion clinics in nearby states.

"This is a good news, bad news situation," said Newman. "While we are grateful that dangerous abortion mills are closing around the nation, it is unfortunate that Kansas has become a magnet for child-killing. This only adds to Kansas's reputation of being the Nation's Abortion Capital."

Operation Rescue is one of the leading pro-life Christian activist organizations in the nation. Operation Rescue recently made headlines when it bought and closed an abortion clinic in Wichita, Kansas and has become the voice of the pro-life activist movement in America. Its activities are on the cutting edge of the abortion issue, taking direct action to restore legal personhood to the pre-born and stop abortion in obedience to biblical mandates.

Notes from a Cultural Madhouse

A fatally flawed and fatuous judgment

Some thoughts on a Catholic's endorsement of Barack Obama

By Christopher Zehnder

Mr. Douglas Kmiec's recent endorsement in Slate magazine of Sen. Barack Obama for president of the United States has, not surprisingly, generated a good deal of anger. (See California Catholic Daily's, "A wide cast of the net," March 26.) What is a noted constitutional scholar, a conservative who served in the Reagan administration, and (what's more) a Catholic doing by publicly endorsing a candidate who has made no bones about his support for abortion on demand and homosexual rights?

"Adoption in the womb"

Conservative legislators in Mexico's capital city propose law that would give mothers an alternative to abortion

With the goal of offering an alternative to women who may be considering abortion, members of the National Action Party in the Legislative Assembly of Mexico's capital city, the Federal District, have proposed a reform to the Code of Civil Procedures that would add "adoption in the mother's womb."

The Federal District, which includes Mexico City, is the only area in Mexico in which abortion is legal for any reason up to the 12th week of pregnancy. The Supreme Court of Mexico is currently in the process of deciding whether the law legalizing abortion in the Federal District violates the country's constitution.

In a March 26 press conference, Assemblywoman Celina Saavedra said that, under the proposed change to the civil code, women who don't want or who are not able to take care of their unborn children will be able to give them up for adoption before delivery.

HLI Humanae Vitae Priests: The Challenge: The Clueless Catholic

  The Challenge: The Clueless Catholic
By John Mallon

In their issue of February 11, 2008, Newsweek magazine carried a column in which the author unwittingly shed a great deal of light on a glaring problem in the Church today. Namely, the ignorance of the Catholic Faith by otherwise educated Catholics. It is a clear case of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing, or to bring it back to the words of Jesus, "Beware of the learned and the wise, they will lead you astray."

Despite dissenters' affection for "nuance," their statements on moral issues are often received (and broadcast in the media) in a very "unnuanced" way, and all too often interpreted by the public as, "Hey, that means it's okay!"

As the movement for dissent against the Catholic faith was getting off the ground one argument said, "This is the most educated generation of Catholics in history, we don't need the Church telling us what to do!" And with that, the entire catechetical structure of the Church in the West proceeded to fall apart. The author of the Newsweek column, "Talking to Kids about God," Kathleen Deveny is a product of that collapse.

She acknowledges the results of her failed religious education: "It's not just about the gaps in my education. As a 'cafeteria Catholic,' I don't accept all the tenets of my religion. I am never going to teach my daughter that evolution is a fraud, and someday I will encourage her to think critically, not doctrinally, about issues like artificial birth control, stem-cell research and abortion."
One wonders if anyone taught her to think critically about the voices opposing the Church. Does she swallow whole the dissident voices on these issues? I wonder if it ever occurred to Mrs. Deveny that there is a connection between her "discomfort" and her "disagreements" with the Church; both are based in ignorance.

Mrs. Deveny is the product of a catechetical culture that packaged the Catholic Faith in CCD classes as "subject matter" rather than an encounter with the Living God. After the required lessons, kids would then "graduate" from the dull lessons (and active participation in the life of the Church) with the sacrament of Confirmation. (The precise opposite of the true meaning of the sacrament, which is to launch the Catholic into the great adventure of life in the Holy Spirit.)

She's not alone.

There are numerous prominent Catholics who boast of their Catholicism but who clearly "don't get it." The public pronouncements on the faith from the likes of Chris Matthews, Sean Hannity, John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Phil Donahue, ad nauseam, are an embarrassment. We find similar attitudes in our parishes and even our own families.

This is the landscape we face trying to educate Catholics on the truth and beauty of Humanae Vitae, a full forty years after its publication. Many Catholics have never heard this at all. The text of this great document is not difficult, it is simple, gentle and clear. It is also a matter of life and death. Forty years of experience and reflection have only vindicated and strengthened the document.

In this series, we will explore the dangers of widespread contraceptive use Paul VI predicted, and others which have emerged, as part of Human Life International's Humanae Vitae Initiative, as an aid to priests and all interested parties in teaching the truth of this document. HLI's founder, Father Paul Marx, OSB, was fond of quoting the great Dr. Jerome LeJeune that Humanae Vitae may turn out be the most important encyclical in history.

Catholics have a responsibility to know the truth, that it is not good enough to dismiss vital Church teachings on the basis of nonsense they heard in bad religious ed or get as adults through the media. They don't simply need remedial catechesis; they need evangelization. The Bride must be introduced to the Bridegroom. It goes back to the First Commandment: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind." The key to understanding Catholic beauty and truth is ultimately conversion. We will explore this in future installments.

Message from Bishops for the Day for Life:

EUROPE/SPAIN -  "No Catholic, whether it be in the public or private sphere, can ever permit any practice such as abortion, euthanasia, or the artificial production, freezing, and manipulation of human embryos."

Madrid (Agenzia Fides) - "As Bishops, we feel it our duty to promote the value of human life in the Church and in society, and to work in favor of all initiatives that support the family and life, such as the international moratorium on abortion," stated the Message issued by the Subcommittee for the Family and the Defense of Life, a part of the Spanish Bishops' Conference, in commemoration of the 7th Day for Life that will be held March 31, Feast of the Annunciation. The Message is entitled, "Life is always something good" and reminds the faithful that they can "never justify the death of the innocent. This would undermine the very foundations of society." Keeping this in mind, the Bishops invite the faithful to ask the Lord to open the eyes of all, especially politicians, that they may "realize [the truth] and bring an end to the great human tragedy that abortion implies for the child, the mother herself, and for society as a whole." They also ask that abortion be outlawed and that there be a true support for women provided, thus "creating a new culture where families welcome and uphold life." Towards this same goal, they also mention the possibility of adoption.
Continuing the Message, they remind Catholics of their moral obligations and duties of conscience. "No Catholic, whether it be in the public or private sphere, can ever permit any practice such as abortion, euthanasia, or the artificial production, freezing, and manipulation of human embryos." Human life is sacred and we must all respect it and the laws protect it." If any Catholic has doubts on these questions, the Bishops said, they should ask the Holy Spirit, in prayer, to illumine them."
"Life is a wonderful reality that never ceases to amaze us," the Bishops added and, "the more scientific facts are revealed, the more we can understand that man has been created in the image and likeness of God and that it is a mystery that goes beyond the boundaries of the pure bio-chemical aspects." A life should be welcomed, respected, and loved. It is everyone's duty to "welcome life as a gift that should be respected, cared for, and fostered, all the more so when it is fragile and in need of more care and attention, whether it be before birth or in its final phase." (RG) (Agenzia Fides 27/3/2008; righe 28, parole 392)

McCain and the Pope: McCain cannot win in November without the Catholic vote

How is he going to get it?

by Robert R. Reilly

March 25, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Sen. John McCain cannot win in November without the Catholic vote, which is around 25 percent of the electorate. How is he going to get it? The worst thing he could assume is that it is going to fall into his lap because Catholics will have nowhere else to go. Some people with nowhere to go simply stay home. Or they may go elsewhere, as it appears they have already been doing.

Activists Defend Barack Obama's Vote Against Victims of Botched Abortions

by Steven Ertelt
LifeNews.com Editor
March 25
, 2008

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Abortion advocates are defending votes Barack Obama cast in the Illinois Senate against a bill that would require medical facilities to provide appropriate medical care to babies who survive botched abortions. One pro-life blogger says the arguments make it less likely Obama will be elected president.

In a recent editorial at the pro-abortion blog RH Reality Check, activist Dana Goldstein writes about a "conservative smear campaign" highlighting Obama's radical pro-abortion position.

Goldstein says the "anti-Obama strategy" is based on Obama's votes against the Illinois Born Alive Infant Protection Act.

That's the measure that helps babies who are victims of botched abortions or left to die without any medical treatment following intentional premature births, otherwise known as induced-birth or live-birth abortions.

Goldstein applauds Obama for voting against the bill, when a federal version passed in the U.S. Senate on a unanimous vote with the support of pro-life and pro-abortion lawmakers.

"It is to Barack Obama's credit that, as an Illinois state senator, he voted against BAIPA twice, and then, as chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee in 2003, prevented it from advancing to the floor," she writes.

She admonishes abortion advocates split between the Obama and Hillary Clinton camps to not attack each other.

Instead, she wants them to understand that pro-life advocates "plan to peel moderate and Republican support away from Obama by painting him as a heartless politician who closed his ears to the cries of 'abortion survivors.'"

But Denny Hartford, a pro-life blogger at Vital Signs, writes that Goldstein is doing the work of pro-life advocates by highlighting Obama's extremist votes that put him well out of the mainstream on abortion.

"Well, he did close his ears to the cries of abortion survivors," Hartford explains. "And, to most Americans, that's as clear and as callous an act of irresponsibility as one could find."

Hartford says "every article that delineates his record on this matter will indeed 'peel' support away from the Illinois Senator."

"In fact, with a few more defenses of Barack Obama of the kind Ms. Goldstein has written, the 'social conservatives' won't have to lift a pen," he concludes.

Abortion, breast cancer, and the Susan Komen Foundation

Here's a great billboard ad currently on display in Waco, TX, provided by pro-lifer John PIscotta:

abc.jpg

The Susan G. Komen Foundation is the best known organization raising money for the cure. But Komen gives money to Planned Parenthood, the U.S.'s largest abortion provider, and abortion causes breast cancer.

Komen, pro-aborts, and all liberal groups also vehemently deny the abortion-breast cancer connection.

For those 2 reasons, pro-lifers do not donate to Komen.

One Million Pro-Lifers Needed for May 3rd Rosary

MEMPHIS, Tenn., March 25 /Christian Newswire/ -- Uniting one million people in the United States to pray the Rosary for unborn babies may seem unrealistic to some people, but that is not stopping the Saint Michael the Archangel Organization from trying.

On Saturday, May 3rd, 2008 the ONE MILLION ROSARIES FOR UNBORN BABIES prayer event is scheduled to take place. Participants will pray the Rosary for the following intention: For an end to the surgical and non-surgical killing of unborn babies. All participants will be praying the Rosary within the same 60-minute time span (9 a.m. - 10 a.m. Eastern Time Zone; 8 a.m. - 9 a.m. Central Time Zone; etc.)

"The primary way to stop the killing of unborn babies is not by way of politics and is not by way of education", stated Patrick Benedict, President of the Saint Michael the Archangel Organization and a parishioner at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in the Diocese of Memphis in Tennessee. "The person battling the "Culture of Death" is primarily in a spiritual battle and needs to use spiritual weaponry.

"The Rosary is a powerful spiritual weapon, and I hope there will be at least one million people in the United States taking hold of their Rosaries on May 3rd and participating in the ONE MILLION ROSARIES FOR UNBORN BABIES prayer event."

Registering for the May 3rd prayer event is easy and quick, and it can be done by going to www.SaintMichaelTheArchangelOrganization.org A person without computer access may ask for help from someone who has a computer or may receive information by writing to: Saint Michael the Archangel Organization; P. O. Box 41257; Memphis, TN 38174(A non-tax-deductible donation for postage, etc. would be appreciated.)

The Saint Michael the Archangel Organization's website has much information, including the opportunity for people to send an email to Pope Benedict XVI to ask that he: 1) re-establish, as he sees fit, the practice of having prayers offered after Masses; and, 2) that these prayers (which include The Hail Mary Prayer and the Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel) be offered for the following intention: For an end to the surgical and non-surgical killing of unborn babies.

The Saint Michael the Archangel Organization coordinated the ROSARY FOR LIFE SUNDAY prayer event in 2007 and is now coordinating the ONE MILLION ROSARIES FOR UNBORN BABIES prayer event.

Barack Obama, African-American Leaders Must Confront High Abortion Figures

by Steven Ertelt
LifeNews.com Editor
March 24
, 2008

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A leading African-American pro-life advocate says Barack Obama and other black leaders must confront the phenomenon of black women having abortions at significantly higher rates than their white counterparts. Instead of advocating more abortions, the leader says Obama and others should promote alternatives.

Walter Hoye, who heads community relations at the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church of Berkeley, California, told LifeNews.com about the problem.

Planned Parenthood Woes Continue as National Office Closes South Florida Mills
Operation Rescue Calls for Full Investigation, Defunding of Nation's Largest Abortion Organization

BOCA RATON, Fla., March 24 /Christian Newswire/ -- Planned Parenthood's woes continued as it was revealed last week that a financial scandal and "deficiencies" prompted the Planned Parenthood of South Palm Beach and Broward Counties affiliate to suspend services and correct problems at the demand of the national parent organization. The clinics remain closed to new patients.

Problems with the South Florida affiliate came to light after four board members resigned in protest of improper accounting of funds. The abortion clinic claimed to be financially strapped yet reported an annual budget is $3.9 million, with $441,000 of that coming from state tax dollars. Amid the scandal, the Chief Executive Officer Mary Capobianco tendered her resignation. Several employees have been laid off.

"It has to be pretty bad when the national organization demands that an affiliate suspend operations," said Operation rescue President Troy Newman. "With that kind of budget, there is no reason for dangerous conditions to exist - unless of course, someone is absconding with the money."

"Given the track record of the abortion cartel, it was likely the misuse of money that brought the national organization down on the Florida group, rather than the shoddy clinic conditions," said Newman. "They have repeatedly demonstrated that they care more about money than they do about women."

Other Planned Parenthood affiliates have recently been accused of additional improprieties.

"Planned Parenthood has been revealed to be a money grubbing group that has little consideration for the law that must be fully investigated," said Newman. "It is unconscionable that our tax dollars continue to prop them up. We applaud recent efforts by Congressman Mike Pence and others to halt Federal funding of Planned Parenthood. We call on each state to do the same."
