Lifeissues.net Newsletter 460

Dear Friends for Life,

'Breast Feeding' protects the mother's health. A study published in the April 2009 Ob/Gyn Journal examined 140,000 women who breastfed for over more than a year compared to an equal number who did not. It reports that the breast feeders were ten times less likely to develop heart attacks and strokes then women who had never breast fed. Some benefit was seen if breast feeding had lasted only for one month.

The Israeli Pro-life Organization has stated that Israel has lost more than 1.5 million Jewish children to abortion since 1948, this in a country containing only 5.5 million Jews. Yet, over 50 thousand abortions are still performed every year in Israel. The Jewish birthrate is 2.3 babies per woman in her lifetime, the indigenous Arabs living in Israel have a birthrate almost double the Jewish rate. Not surprisingly, the Arab population is younger. Half of Israeli Arabs are under eighteen, only one-third of Jews are.

Looking at Jamaica, we see the argument in Parliament over permitting abortion continues. A major poll has shown that 60% of adult Jamaicans stated that they were pro-life and that this issue was likely to influence their vote. A further poll asks, "Should doctors and nurses be forced to perform abortions under the law?" 77% strongly disagreed, and only 12% strongly agreed.

England, Too Young - Let Him Die: Laws in England require life-saving treatment to newborns only if they are more than 22 weeks along. Sarah Capewell's son was 21 weeks and 5 days into her pregnancy when he was born. Doctors refused to help him and he died several hours later, if he had only been two days older . . .

Stay strong, the unborn babies need your voice to survive.

God Bless
Jerry Novotny, OMI

ITEM #1.  Pornography undermines marriages, researcher shows

It's not exactly news that marriage is in crisis. Marriage rates are dropping, which means the next generations will be weaker because children won't have the benefit of the love of both parents. Nations will be poorer, less healthy, and less happy also. We know all this from sound social science. Pornography is likely one of the key ingredients in this evisceration of society. Consider its documented effects on family life.....

ITEM #2. Abortion Business Marie Stopes Did 920K Abortions in 43 Countries in 2009

The Britain-based abortion business Marie Stopes International announced today that it did 920,000 abortions in 43 countries in 2009. The British equivalent of Planned Parenthood said it experienced the largest annual growth in the organization's 33-year history, according to the figures it released today. MSI indicated most of its work takes place in developing countries and in rural areas or urban slums where it says the "need" for abortion is at its greatest.

ITEM #4. On Human Exceptionalism: The Crazy Idea Human Life Should be Respected

An embrace of human exceptionalism does not depend on religious belief. Whether our distinctive moral characteristics flow from the processes of blind evolution, or the mind of God, or some other mechanism, the unique importance of being human can be robustly supported by a rational examination of the differences between humans and all other known life forms.

The idea that human beings stand at the pinnacle of the moral hierarchy of life should be - and once was - uncontroversial. After all, what other species in the known history of life has attained the wondrous capacities of human beings? What other species has transcended the tooth-and-claw world of naked natural selection to the point that, at least to some degree, we now control nature instead of being controlled by it?

What other species builds civilizations, records history, creates art, makes music, thinks abstractly, communicates in language, envisions and fabricates machinery, improves life through science and engineering, or explores the deeper truths found in philosophy and religion? What other species has true freedom? Not a one. David Oderberg gets to the heart of why humans are exceptional.

ITEM #5. Study: 56% Of Young Adults In A New Sexual Relationship Infected With HPV

If ever there was a reason for parents to warn their teens off sexual encounters before marriage, a recent study has found it. The groundbreaking study of couples found more than half (56 per cent) of young adults in a new sexual relationship were infected with the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV).

ITEM #6. Trace of Thought Is Found in 'Vegetative' Patient

Comment: As usual, no matter how great the discovery about the brain or the facts involved, media like the NYT are compelled to try to dimiss the findings as "rare" and not very important ("Trace of Thought"). And, as usual, the NYT feels compelled to insist that these cases are not like the Terri Schiavo case even though Terri was more responsive than the patients in this story apparently are. I call this the "blood on the hands" syndrome: Once someone has supported or caused a death, that death must continue to be justified and rationalized to keep the person from admitting a lethal error. -Nancy Valko, RN

ITEM #8. Stem Cell Ethics and the Things We Refuse to Do

In arguing for ethical science, those of us working to safeguard human life would do well to examine our premises carefully, so as to avoid weak or questionable assumptions that could undermine the thrust of our arguments.

ITEM #9. Our Vanishing Ultimate Resource

For decades, demographers and economists have watched the world's fertility rate plunge as countries grew wealthier and more urban. These days, fertility rates in much of the industrialized world are far below replacement levels - that is, the number of kids that parents must have to replace themselves and adults who remain childless. Though the steepest declines happened first in wealthy countries like Japan, Italy, Germany, and Spain, even many developing countries have seen their fertility rates head downward.

ITEM #10. Why so many abortion workers have turned pro-life.

Abortion rights activists have long preferred to hold themselves at some remove from the practice they promote; rather than naming it, they speak of "choice" and "reproductive freedom." But those who perform abortions have no such luxury. Instead, advances in ultrasound imaging and abortion procedures have forced providers ever closer to the nub of their work. Especially in abortions performed far enough along in gestation that the fetus is recognizably a tiny baby, this intimacy exacts an emotional toll, stirring sentiments for which doctors, nurses, and aides are sometimes unprepared. Most apparently have managed to reconcile their belief in the right to abortion with their revulsion at dying and dead fetuses, but a noteworthy number have found the conflict unbearable and have defected to the pro-life cause.

The concept of human dignity and what is required to respect it is at the centre of the euthanasia debate.
