FROM CALIFORNIA CATHOLIC DAILY: Steve Poizner is the only Republican candidate for governor who is against taxpayer-funded abortions.

Why Poizner

California's Scott Brown?

Editor: Looking at the three major candidates for governor (Jerry Brown, Meg Whitman, and Steve Poizner), California social conservatives are faced with a situation like that of Massachusetts Citizens for Life, who worked to elect Scott Brown, a pro-choice Republican. Scott Brown won the Massachusetts U.S. Senate seat on January 19. The California primary on June 8 will decide whether Poizner or Whitman will face Jerry Brown in November.

The following two press releases came out on March 5, the day before Poizner won the support of the conservative California Republican Assembly with 79 percent of the vote.

Poizner Only Candidate Against Taxpayer-Funded Abortions
March 5 - Steve Poizner today announced the statewide leadership team for his Values Voters Coalition. Steve Poizner is the only Republican candidate for governor who is against taxpayer-funded abortions. Steve supports traditional marriage and voted in favor of Proposition 8. Don Sebastiani, former State Assembly Member will serve as Chairman of Poizner's Values Voters Coalition.

"I'm proud to have the support of so many respected leaders within the conservative community and I look forward to growing our coalition as we campaign throughout California," said Commissioner Poizner. "I believe in traditional marriage and I firmly believe that neither the federal government, nor the state of California, should use taxpayer dollars to fund abortions."

"Steve Poizner is my choice for Governor in 2010. While we may not agree on all issues, he knows that traditional values help keep California families strong, and he knows that public funding of abortion is against the values of the vast majority of Californians," said Don Sebastiani. "I am proud to serve on Steve's Values Voters Coalition because as Governor, Steve will stand up for our families, stand against public funding of abortion, fight against late-term abortions, and will strongly support parental notification."

"Steve has demonstrated time and time again that he shares the values that make California's families strong and I trust that he will continue to advocate for those values when he is governor," said Mike Spence. "I'm proud to support Steve Poizner for governor because he is against taxpayer funding of abortions and he understands that marriage should be between a man and a woman."

Poizner Endorses Parental Notification Initiative
March 5 - Republican candidate for governor Steve Poizner today announced his support for the California Parental Notification Initiative. If passed, the initiative would change the California Constitution to prohibit a minor from having an abortion until the physician notifies the minor's parent or legal guardian. The initiative provides exceptions for a medical emergency, parental waiver, or parental abuse.

"As a leader in the parental notification movement, I strongly believe that Steve Poizner is the only candidate in the race for governor who will stand up for the goals of the parental notification movement and work to protect the safety of minors," said Jim Holman, newspaper publisher and parental rights advocate. "Steve Poizner's endorsement of the parental notification initiative further reinforces my strong support for Steve's candidacy and proves that, unlike other candidates, Steve Poizner is willing to take a clear stand on issues that matter to social conservatives."

Holman joins Don Sebastiani, former member of the California State Assembly and another leader in the parental notification movement, in endorsing Steve Poizner for governor because of his principled stand on the California Parental Notification Initiative and other issues of importance to values voters.

"I believe that we should work to drive the number of abortions in California down to zero," said Commissioner Poizner. "As a father, I fully support parental notification and I strongly urge voters on all sides of this issue to come together to back this important initiative."
