The modern conception of work and rest undermines the foundations of the family, favoring "an individualistic lifestyle." That's the reflection Benedict XVI places at the center of his Letter to the 7th World Meeting of Families, to be held in Milan from May 30 to June 3, 2012. The theme will be on "The Family: Work and Rest." In the document presented this morning at the Holy See Press Office, the Pope hopes that participants will from now on undertake an "appropriate ecclesial and cultural preparation", especially as next year will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the apostolic exhortation, Familiaris Consortio. "We need to promote reflection and a commitment aimed at reconciling the demands of work with those of the family," says the Letter of Benedict XVI, "and recover the true meaning of rest, especially on Sundays, Holy Week, days of the Lord and days of man, a day for the family, for community and solidarity." The next World Meeting will, like its predecessors, last five days and will culminate on the Saturday evening with the "Festival of Testimonies". On the Sunday, there will be a Mass, with events presided over by the Pope.
Were there to be no support in the whole history of ethical and moral thought, were there no acknowledged confirmation from medical science, were the history of legal opinion to the contrary, we would still have to conclude on the basis of God's Holy Word that the unborn child is a person in the sight of God. He is protected by the sanctity of life graciously given to each individual by the Creator, Who alone places His image upon man and grants them any right to life which they have.
