Des Moines, IA - A rare petition signed by the majority of members of the Iowa Senate that forced House File 657, the Fetal Pain bill, to the floor is in jeopardy of being withdrawn by Democratic Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal. Urgent action is needed now to prevent protections for late-term babies from being dumped. "It is outrageous to think that one man could thwart the will of the majority of his own constituents, the will of the House, and the will of the Governor, all of which support protecting late-term babies from a painful death from abortion," said Operation Rescue spokesperson Cheryl Sullenger. "There is such overwhelming support for this measure that it would be a grave injustice to deny it an up or down vote on the Senate floor. We need to flood Gronstal's phones and E-mail with support for this bill." Gronstal represents the Council Bluffs area where late-term abortionist LeRoy Carhart has said he plans to open a late-term abortion clinic in the next few months. City council meetings in that community have been packed with citizens in opposition to Carhart's plans and have expressed overwhelming support for HF 657. The mayor of Council Bluffs and the local newspaper, normally Gronstal supporters, have taken the state senator to task for not representing the interests of the community that elected him to office. "This is dirty politics at its worst," said Sullenger. "These babies need protection, and almost everyone in Iowa wants to protect them. Gronstal must hear our voice immediately to ensure that the will of the people is not trashed in favor of the interests of his buddies in the abortion cartel." Even if you do not live in Iowa, this bill could affect you or someone you love, so please call or write in support of HF 657, the Fetal Pain bill as soon as possible. Contact Sen.
