Lifeissues.net: clear thinking about crucial issues

Dear Friends For Life,

An aggressive step forward for adult stem cells. Numerous previous studies have shown that adult stem cells can facilitate repair of damaged heart muscle. Now an Israeli team has developed a method to stimulate bone marrow adult stem cells to increase their ability to help restore heart function.

The new method uses laser-treated bone marrow adult stem cells to help restore heart function. The technique using low-level laser light is called "shining". In the mouse study to show the technique's effectiveness, the team shone laser light directly on bone marrow, and then tracked the bone marrow adult stem cells and the repair of the mouse hearts after treatment. They found that when the laser light was applied to bone marrow cells a few hours after a heart attack, heart scarring could be reduced by up to 80 percent. Mice that received the shining treatment also showed a significantly higher concentration of adult stem cells in the injured heart compared to mice that had not been treated with the laser light.

According to senior author Prof. Uri Oron: "After we stimulate the cells with the laser and enhance their proliferation in the bone marrow, it's likely that more cells will migrate into the bloodstream. The cells that eventually reach the heart secrete growth factors to a higher extent, and new blood vessel formation is encouraged."

Prof. Oron sees this as a way to make cell therapy simpler. Since there is no need to remove stem cells from the body, this treatment stimulates a whole variety of stem cells to help heal the body. Prof. Oron believes this method could also be beneficial for repair of other organs such as the kidney or the liver. He and his colleagues have also done a series of studies to show that the technique is safe, and are ready to begin clinical trials soon.

The study was recently reported in the journal Lasers in Surgery and Medicine.

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

ITEM #1: The Battle Japan's Losing: Population Falls Again
The country's headcount fell for the second consecutive year to 126.23 million people in the past year up to March 31, the ministry of internal affairs and communications said Tuesday. What's more, other numbers in the report are grim. The 1.21 million deaths during the year is the highest number since 1968, when the register-based survey began, and is one of the reasons why the overall population count lost ground. About 146,200 more people died than were born during the year, another sobering record high, for the fourth straight year.

ITEM #2: The Two-Minus-One Pregnancy

Comment: It's hard to read this article without becoming sick. The excuses for these barbaric abortions range from "protecting" a marriage or possible "neglect" of older siblings to fear of "exhaustion" from rambunctious toddler twins. Really??? This article shows that evil never can limit itself. It must be stopped. -Nancy Valko, RN

ITEM #3: China selling fetal remains as medicine?

According to South Korean media reports, Chinese hospitals are packaging the remains of aborted babies into "human-flesh capsules" to be sold as medications. South Korean authorities have announced an investigation into the charge that fetal remains were being imported as medicine. The capsules are supposedly used for therapy on patients with incurable diseases.

ITEM #4: Birth control use by women with common vein condition raises deadly blood clot risk to 1,700%

While use of the birth control pill raises the risk of deadly blood clots by 500 percent, the risk shoots to over 1,700 percent for U.S. women with a common vein malformation, California researchers have found.

ITEM #5: New York Times reports on selective abortion of twins

The New York Times carries a truly chilling report on women who, discovering that they are pregnant with twins, choose to destroy one of the babies in order to ensure an easier pregnancy -- and an easier life.

****************************************

ITEM #6: One Man, One Woman, and the Common Good: Marriage's Public Purpose

Since the Baker case, every appellate court in this country, both state and federal, that has addressed the validity of marriage as the union of one man and one woman, under the United States Constitution, has upheld the institution as rationally related to the state's interest in responsible procreation and child-rearing. And while some may argue that times have changed, they cannot credibly argue that humanity, as a gendered species, has changed.

ITEM #7 Culture of Death Advances Its War On Life

We live in an age in which pregnancy and the transmission of life is seen as a disease that must be actively combated with mechanical and chemical contraceptives, including invasive surgical sterilization procedures. The gift of life is no longer seen as a gift, but rather as an intolerable burden which must be shirked through technological means. If this anti-life climate is allowed to continue, our society will be guilty of calling for its own demise and embracing its own death.

****************************************

ITEM #8: Sex Selection Eugenics

The prelate of Cebu archdiocese warned the faithful on the weekend A review published in the Journal of the American Medical Association documents the accuracy of a simple blood test for sex determination of a developing human fetus as early as 7 weeks gestation. The study simply looked at the reliability of such tests, but did not bother to address the ethical questions about such tests, other than a brief mention: "A much broader potential application for fetal sex detection is family balancing, which poses ethical concerns."

****************************************

ITEM #9: Christians: Don't Turn Your Back on IVF-Conceived Children

Recently a mother who conceived her child through in vitro fertilization (IVF) wrote to a Washington Post advice column. Her parents objected to the immoral manner of their grandchild's conception - so they decided to have nothing to do with the baby, a decision that was both hurtful and troubling... But turning our backs on a child because of the way he or she was conceived is no part of the Christian message. No child is morally responsible for the way he or she came to be - and that child is still a beautiful gift from God.

ITEM #10: The Modern Roman Colosseum: Euthanasia as a Spectator Sport

A disturbing trend has developed over the last few years of broadcasting the suicides of the weak and elderly in society for entertainment.

****************************************

ITEM #11: Years of liberal dogma have spawned a generation of amoral, uneducated, welfare dependent, brutalised youngsters

[Note: (1) When a liberal government massively takes over critical parental obligations, then it shouldn't wonder why 3 generations of their liberal citizens, including the youth, have no morals -- other than those the government and the "culture" it inculcated has sanctioned and taught them. (2) The flip side is that it isn't just the "youth" who have no morals. After 3 generations of citizen inculcation of liberal "morals", parents probably have no morals themselves any more (if ever), and have gladly and enthusiastically abdicated their parental obligations to the liberal government - it "frees" them to pursue anything other than the very difficult job of 24/7 parenting. Can't teach what you ain't got. It doesn't bode well. Whose "morals", based on what, should we turn to? I doubt this debate will ever take place. - Dianne E Irving, Ph.D.]

ITEM #12: The Demand For Death: Medical Research & Fetal Tissue

[[Note: People already now know how "biological bits and pieces" of aborted human embryos and human fetuses are in demand industrially and otherwise, used in Pepsi, cheeses, and other foods; used as the sources of "trans genes" used in much regenerative medical research (e.g., some stem cell procedures); used as sources for the media culture for embryos and stem cells, the feeder layers and "controls" required for the research, etc. They are a huge part of our economy now! This article explains how this is "legal". Note that "fetal research" is defined - or, as usual, MIS-defined - in the The NIH Revitalization Act (1993) (Public Law 103-43):
SEC. 498B.
(d) DEFINITIONS - For purposes of this section:
(1) The term `human fetal tissue' has the meaning given such term in section 498A
SEC 498A.
(g) DEFINITION- For purposes of this section, the term 'human fetal tissue' means tissue or cells obtained from a dead <span class="red">human embryo or fetus</span> after a spontaneous or induced abortion, or after a stillbirth.' (emphases added)

2. So now the term "fetal tissue" can apply to embryos as well as to fetuses - even when sexually reproduced! Since the "embryonic period" is actually from fertilization through 8 weeks, then this definition would allow the use of tissues or cells from dead human embryos from fertilization through 8 weeks -- as well as from dead fetuses from 9 weeks onward. Thus one could get around the "restrictions" of the Dickey Amendment and perform human embryo research simply by calling it "fetal tissue research" (which is now legal) and by using living embryos and fetuses. [Irving, "Analysis of Legislative and Regulatory Chaos in the U.S.: Asexual Human Reproduction and Genetic Engineering" (October 20, 2004), at: http://www.lifeissues.net/writers/irv/irv_81chaosasexgen1.html]

I also identified this demand for and supply of "fetal tissue" from abortions and the NIH fetal tissue "banks" (even now on NIH websites) in my 1994 article: "Testimony before the NIH Human Embryo Research Panel", at: http://www.lifeissues.net/writers/irv/irv_32individualtestimony.html;<br />PMID: 11652834 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgicmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=11652834

Now, however, they can reproduce a lot of human embryonic "bits and pieces" in IVF/ART research laboratories and "infertility clinics". - Dianne E Irving, Ph.D.]]
