Lifeissues.net: clear thinking about crucial issues

Dear Friends For Life,

Several weeks ago, I received the following news from ALL Stopp Report: Planned Parenthood gives controversial Guttmacher statistics to teens. When a teen asks Planned Parenthood on its Ask the Experts site how effective the withdrawal method is at preventing pregnancy, the "expert" responds that "depending on the guy and how well he uses the method, withdrawal is from 78 to 96 percent effective." The statistics appear to be based on research by Planned Parenthood's sidekick, the Guttmacher Institute.

Yet the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports data from its 2002 Survey of Family Growth (p. 152) that the withdrawal method has a 27 percent failure rate, just slightly above the least effective method - spermicides - with a 29 percent failure rate.

Where is the wisdom in telling teens that withdrawal can give them up to a 96 percent effective free pass for having sex without consequences? So many things are wrong with this representation to teens that it is hard to know where to begin.

Suffice it to say that Planned Parenthood stands to profit exponentially from sexually active teens, and telling them that withdrawal can give them the freedom to do as they please in the sexual realm appears to be the latest weapon in its arsenal of ways to profit off of our children.

Please visit their website today, www.stopp.org, to find out more ways to get Planned Parenthood out of your community and out of your schools.

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

(A Thought) As we celebrate God's great gift of life, let us pray and reflect on how each of us might renew our commitment and witness to "respecting, promoting and teaching the transcendent nature of the human person," thereby shoring up the foundations of a society sorely in need of this guidance. - Cardinal DiNardo invokes the words of the Holy Father in his Respect Life Month Statement.

(BIOETHICS): "Personhood "Language" 2008 - 2011" -  With "personhood" bills exploding around the world in warp speed, perhaps it is time to step back and carefully examine some of the "language" being used in many of these bills in general. The issue is not just about legal "language". It also precludes the average person from forming a "correct conscience", which in turn would constitute a false "starting point" for their own personal ethical decision making and choices.

ITEM #1: Researcher sees threat of 'global aging' in latest data

The phenomenon of "global aging" poses serious problems for the world if nothing is done to promote and protect strong families, according to an analysis of the latest U.N. population data.

****************************************

ITEM #2: Gendercide: Where have all the girls gone?

There is a real culture of death at work attempting to snuff out the flame of respect for human dignity. Protecting all human life in its earliest moments from cloning and other attacks is undoubtedly the human rights and social challenge of our age. As Dr. Lejeune said, "what is at stake is not merely the life of the baby present here and now, but rather the life of the soul of our civilization."

****************************************

ITEM #3: CUA President, John Garvey, Letter to HHS on Contraception Mandate

"On Friday, September 30, the Washington Post published a superb letter by John Garvey, now in his second year as President of The Catholic University of America, strongly protesting the Department of Health and Human Services new regulations, released in August, compelling colleges and universities to provide students with "preventive services" including sterilization procedures and prescription contraceptives, including among the latter those known to cause early abortions insofar as they do not prevent conception but rather the implantation of life already conceived but not yet implanted in the mother's womb. Garvey quite reasonably wrote that "a proper respect for religious liberty would warrant an exemption for our university and other institutions like it.""

ITEM #4: Baby Bennett's Journey: An Update From Kelly Frey

Like many parents of children with medical disabilities, it hasn't been easy for Frey and her husband, Jason. They've waited a while to share the news, but they're doing it now with the hope of helping and encouraging other mothers and fathers.

****************************************

ITEM #5: How tourists can help stop child sex trafficking

The global child sex trade is estimated to affect two million children. Here's how we can help...

****************************************

ITEM #6: Same-sex Households Grow By 80 Percent In The Past 10 Years

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of Americans living together as same-sex couples has skyrocketed by 80 percent over the past decade. Latest Census figures released show there were 646,464 same-sex households in the United States in 2010, compared with 358,390 in 2000. In addition, 20 percent of couples living in same-sex households last year listed themselves as married.

ITEM #7 Discussion Topic: Ten Tips for Catholic Dating

Learn to pray together. Just like a religious community, in marriage you’ll vow obedience… but to each other. So see if you’re a good match by practicing praying, reflecting and leading a shared spiritual life together.

ITEM #8: Powerful Video: Hitler and America's Abortion Holocaust

When was the last time you watched a 30 minute video on YouTube? For me, I can't even remember. So when I hit "play" on this video I thought I would give it a few minutes and move on. I didn't. I watched it until the end in one sitting.

ITEM #9: Contraceptive Used in Africa May Double Risk of H.I.V.

Comment: While contraceptives are sold to women as both a benefit and a right, terrible unexpected consequences continue to be discovered. In contrast, Natural Family Planning is safe, inexpensive and effective for both achieving and postponing pregnancy. Practiced responsibly, the benefits of NFP include enhancing the marital bond, fostering understanding of the gift of fertility and giving the woman more knowledge and respect for her own body. And, it's no longer considered just "Catholic birth control" as more and more couples of many faiths or none at all are beginning to recognize that the current contraceptive mentality is not physically, emotionally or spiritually healthy. -Nancy Valko, RN

ITEM #11: IVF linked to rare genetic disorders

A University of Toronto geneticist is calling for more study of a link between fertility treatment and certain rare genetic disorders, noting that babies born after treatment are up to 10 times more likely to suffer from the conditions - one of which causes serious mental disability. And that is likely just the tip of the iceberg, Dr. Rosanna Weksberg said after addressing Canada's fertilitymedicine community recently.

ITEM #12: Conjoined twins who doctors said wouldn't live are growing, breathing on their own: mother

Note that conjoined twins, as described in the news article below, are forms of monozygotic (identical) twinning. Most monozygotic twinning does not result in conjoined twins. About 1/3 of natural monozygotic twinning takes place from the 2-cell embryo to the blastocyst; about 2/3rds takes place at the blastocyst stage and even later. The "twinning" is caused when one or more of the totipotent cells of the early embryo split off from that embryo, and if successful, the natural processes of "regulation" and "methylation" revert those separated totipotent cells back to new whole embryos. One of every two monozygotic twins is a clone of the first original twin and reproduced asexually (without the immediate use of sperm and oocyte), and takes place naturally within the fallopian tube or uterus of the woman -- or artificially outside her body in IVF/ART research laboratories and "infertility clinics".

Conjoined twins are formed when the early human embryo's totipotent cells do not split off and separate completely, and can take place even after 14-days and the supposed formation of the primitive streak. This is why "personhood" initiatives which purport to protect the live and dignity of all innocent living human beings must explicitly include both sexually and asexually reproduced human beings, reproduced in vivo and in vitro, in such legal documents to prevent unethical legal loopholes. The asexually reproduced twin did not begin to exist at "fertilization" or "conception", was never even a "zygote", often not even a morula, and some do not begin to exist until after the formation of the blastocyst or even 14-days post-fertilization or later:

Ronan O'Rahilly and Fabiola Muller, Human Embryology and Teratology (New York: Wiley-Liss, 2001, p. 55: "Conjoined twins are believed to arise immediately before, during, or shortly after the appearance of the primitive streatk at 2 - 21/2 weeks (post-fertilization)."
