"Not compatible with life," were the words that appeared on the CT scan.
The words referred to Samantha Palumbo, 18, of San Dimas. Three years ago, she ran her car into a fence of five-inch diameter wooden logs. According to the Aug. 26 Los Angeles Times, a piece of the fence hit Samantha in the head, peeling back much of her face, shattering many of her teeth. Worse, a large hole stood in the top left of her forehead.
It was the hole, ironically, that saved Samantha's life. At County-USC Medical Center, where she was taken, CT scans showed a severely damaged, swollen brain. But the hole gave the brain room to expand, other than downward – crushing her brainstem and thus causing her death.
