Institutions must help families with concrete aid

In a speech given to the Italian Life Movement, Benedict XVI said that defending life is an important duty for Catholics, even if it is harder to do so now than before. The Pope noted that abortion was legalized in Italy 30 years ago and that against the many and various causes of abortion, the Church upholds the sacred value of life and encourages initiatives to support families and marriage. The Holy Father added that besides simply giving witness, the Catholic world asks institutions to take concrete steps to remove the impediments that lead to discouragement and closure to the gift of life. The right to life is one of the most fundamental rights, something to be remembered this year, during the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of the Rights of Man.
