America's Skepticism will Follow Sotomayor to the Supreme Court

WASHINGTON, Aug. 6 /Christian Newswire/ -- Today, the United State Senate confirmed Judge Sonia Sotomayor as the next Justice of the Supreme Court by a vote of 68-31.

Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee (CWALAC) President Wendy Wright said, "Sonia Sotomayor begins her tenure on the Supreme Court with a daunting challenge to live up to the standard she presented during her nomination hearing. She carries the burden of the public's skepticism that she will follow the Constitution and law, not her ethnic experience or foreign laws, in her rulings. Her lifetime appointment will be a test as to whether she acted with integrity."

Mario Diaz, Esq., CWALAC's Policy Director for Legal Issues, said, "The 31 Senators who voted to oppose Judge Sotomayor's nomination showed great character and respect for the Constitution by opposing her. Liberals have certainly tried to demonize them because they were voting against the first Hispanic Supreme Court nominee. But we can be proud of Judge Sotomayor's accomplishments as a Hispanic and still strongly disagree with her judicial philosophy. As a Hispanic myself, I can say that to suggest all Senators must vote for someone just because of their race is ridiculous and, in fact, demeaning to all minorities.

"Judge Sotomayor herself showed how radical her views were when she had to run away from her own statements during the hearings. Her 'conversion' proves what we have always argued, that a judge is supposed to rule based on the law and not based on 'empathy' as President Obama has argued.

"This confirmation actually may turn out to be immensely beneficial to conservatives because it should put an end to the President's ridiculous standard and set a new path for future nominees."
