SBA List: Fall Legislative Priorities

TO:                  Emily Buchanan, Executive Director
FROM:            Blair Bjellos, Legislative Director
RE:                  Fall Legislative Priorities

Emily, below are our top legislative priorities headed into the fall. It is absolutely critical that SBA List members take action by lobbying their Representatives. I’ve included direct links to our action center on each item.

1. Life Speaking Out Campaign

The House Republican Leadership is drafting a legislative blueprint to outline their agenda should they take back the majority this November, which could be released as early as the third week in September.  It is essential that they include a family values plank in this document with a commonsense, pro-life agenda. According to reports, this isn’t case.

Action: Tell Republican Leadership that Defending Women, Unborn Children, and Taxpayers should be a Priority in its Legislative Blueprint.

2. Abortion on Military Bases

The Senate has yet to consider their version of the Defense Authorization bill which currently includes the legalization of abortion on military bases, both domestically and abroad.  In wartime, the last thing we need to do is spend resources on the destruction of Life in military clinics where they work to preserve the lives of our servicemen and women.

Action: Tell Your Senators that Abortion is Not Health Care and our Brave Women Serving in the Military Deserve Better.

3. No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act

Shortly before the summer recess, Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Congressman Dan Lipinski (D-IL) introduced H.R. 5939 the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, which establishes a consistent government-wide prohibition on abortion funding.

Action: Ask Your Representative to Cosponsor the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act.

4. No Federal Funding of Abortion in ObamaCare

Joe Pitts (R-PA) and Congressman Dan Lipinski (D-IL) introduced H.R. 5111, the Protect Life Act, after the passage of the pro-abortion health care bill. This bill amends the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to ensure that no federal funds go toward elective abortion, prevents any federal agency from mandating abortion, and protects the conscience of healthcare workers.

Action: Encourage your Representative to Cosponsor the Protect Life Act.

Finally, please encourage our members to forward this memo to their friends, family, neighbors and co-workers. It is absolutely critical that as many pro-life Americans as possible lobby their Congressman on these life-saving pieces of legislation, especially because groups like Planned Parenthood will be working overtime to defeat these bills.
