Barnstable, MA - The trial of abortionist Rapin Osathanondh, who is accused of manslaughter in the abortion-related death of Laura Hope Smith, 22, has been delayed one week. The trial is now scheduled to begin on September 14, 2010, exactly 3 years and one day after Laura died in Osathanondh's understaffed and ill-equipped Hyannis abortion clinic from complications to a powerful anesthesia.
In February, 2008, Osathanondh surrendered his medical license and signed an agreement to never again seek licensing in any state. He is also being sued by Laura's family in civil court for wrongful death.
Shortly after the death, Operation Rescue was contacted by Laura's mother, Eileen Smith. OR advised Mrs. Smith to file a complaint with the medical board and helped her pursue criminal charges.
"We find comfort that Laura's death was not in vain," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. "It has gotten a dangerous abortionist off the street and has led at least one of Laura's friends to reject abortion. Women are safer today because of the courageous way Laura's family has fought for justice. We have the utmost respect for them. It is just tragic that someone had to die for this to happen. We pray that justice will be done under the law and that the Smith family can finally have closure and healing."
