Good News: Florida Takes Up Pro-Life Bills

by CitizenLink Staff

The Florida Senate Health Regulation Committee voted 7-5 on Monday in favor of legislation that would provide a woman with an ultrasound and information on her preborn baby before an abortion.

“Ultimately, in any procedure, whether I am having a hysterectomy, whether I have breast cancer, I am the patient,” Sen. Ronda Storms, the Republican sponsor of the bill, told The Tampa Tribune.

“And I am entitled to have all information that is available to me. What this bill does, it says that a doctor or obstetrician or any health care provider cannot … withhold information from a woman who is coming to get medical services.”

Planned Parenthood — the nation’s largest abortion business — joined Democrats and the American Civil Liberties Union in opposing the bill.

Democratic Sen. Eleanor Sobel claimed the measure makes women “second-class citizens” and “insults their intelligence.”

The same bill was vetoed last year by then-Gov. Charlie Crist.

Republican Gov. Rick Scott said recently: “I’ve been pro-life all my life, and I’m going to be a pro-life governor. I let people know my position. I’ve not surprised people.”

John Stemberger, president of the Florida Family Policy Council, said he was encouraged by two efforts that would stop taxpayer dollars from paying for abortions.

“We’ve very excited about both a constitutional amendment that will be on the ballot in 2012, if it’s passed,” he explained, “in addition to another collateral bill regarding the health access loophole — to prohibit any public funding of abortions.”

The health committee will soon vote on legislation that would protect late-term preborn babies, and a bill that would strengthen parental-notification laws.
