Komen: Planned Parenthood Doesn t Do Mammograms With Grants
In new emails Susan G. Komen for the Cure is sending to people complaining about their grants to the Planned Parenthood abortion business, officials claim the grants are given to help women obtain breast cancer screenings. Yet, Komen also admits Planned Parenthood doesn t do mammograms.
Last year, Komen spokesman John Hammarley confirmed 20 of Komen s 122 affiliates have made donations to Planned Parenthood and, in 2009, those contributions totaled $731,303. He also confirmed Komen affiliates contributed about $3.3 million to the abortion business from 2004-2009.
In a new form letter to one pro-life person who complained about the grants, obtained by LifeNews.com, Komen explains the donations, but says 19 affiliates have donated.
Thanks very much for writing to share your concern with us. Recent questions have arisen regarding a limited number of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® community grants to Planned Parenthood breast health programs, specifically those designed to provide screening mammograms for vulnerable populations, e.g., low-income and uninsured women, Komen says. Currently, 19 Komen for the Cure Affiliates award 19 local grants specifically to Planned Parenthood-sponsored programs in their communities to pay for breast cancer education and breast screenings.
However, a late March expose from Live Action revealed no Planned Parenthood centers nationally provide mammograms.
In its email to people concerned about the Komen-Planned Parenthood connection, a Komen official admits Planned Parenthood doesn t provide mammograms for women with its grant money. Komen makes it clear the money is merely funneled through the abortion business to legitimate medical centers that actually perform mammograms. Full story at LifeNews.com
16-Year-Old Girl Suffered Botched Abortion at Planned Parenthood
Local pro-life advocates have obtained more details concerning a woman who was recently victimized by a botched abortion at the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Everett, Washington.
The facility sent a woman in to the hospital in late March and local pro-life advocate Mary Emanuel was at the abortion facility at the time and snapped pictures of the ambulance that whisked the woman away. John Hubert of the blog Abortion in Washington, obtained the tapes of the phone call from Planned Parenthood staff to emergency personnel requesting the ambulance.
Some of the information on the call was redacted, but Hubert was able to utilize the strong public records laws in Washington to learn the woman victimized by the failed abortion was only 16 years of age.
While the call was already shocking and raised many questions on its own regarding the consequences of deregulation of the Washington State abortion industry, one portion of the audio had been redacted, Hubert said over the weekend. We posted the audio as we got it but looked into what was redacted and why. SNOPAC, the organization which handles 911 calls for Snohomish County, told us that they had redacted the patient s age, because they had decided it was personally identifying.
Hubert challenged the claim and, he said he pointed out that there was nothing personally identifying about an age on its own and he informed local officials with the agency we were explicitly told that there were no privacy issues in the call.
We suspected that the patient had in fact been a minor. There s always a fear that Planned Parenthood might have tried to influence SNOPAC, but we don t have any evidence of that, he said. Full story at LifeNews.com
Abortion Centers in Delaware Affiliated With Gosnell Will Close
Two Delaware-based abortion facilities associated with embattled abortion practitioner Kermit Gosnell will likely remain closed, according to new information from Delaware officials.
James Liguori, who is representing Panzy Myrie, the other of the two Atlantic Women s Medical Services abortion centers based in Delaware that closed in March because of problems related to Gosnell s Philadelphia abortion business, made the information available late today. He indicated the Wilmington, Delaware abortion center has been put up for sale and the owner and operator of the abortion businesses wants to move on.
They don t want to start over, he said.
The information came to light, according to a Courier Post newspaper report, on the same day state regulators were planning to hold hearings on accusations that Myrie had improperly represented herself as a licensed physician in online advertisements for the abortion business even though she does not hold a valid medical license in Delaware. Prosecutors had hoped the Delaware Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline would issue a ruling against the abortion facility owner requesting that she stop masquerading as a valid abortion practitioner.
However, both sides reached a weekend agreement and the hearing was called off today. Although details of the agreement were not made public, the newspaper indicated Liguori said the order amicably resolves the concern that the medical practices board had.
The two Delaware abortion centers run under the Atlantic name came under scrutiny because Gosnell had worked at them one day a week in addition to operating the Philadelphia abortion business that was shut down when inspectors found horrific conditions and learned he had engaged in hundreds of infanticides whereby he would begin an abortion by purposefully inducing an early birth of an unborn child and jabbing the baby in the spinal cord with scissors in an attempt to snip the spinal cord. Gosnell faces several charges related to the infanticides and one murder charge related to a woman who died in a failed abortion at his center. Full story at LifeNews.com
Abortion Practitioner Evicted From Las Vegas, Nevada Clinic
A Las Vegas abortion practitioner has been evicted from one of the two abortion facilities he operates in the large Nevada city, and is now down to operating just one abortion business.
Frank Silver was evicted from his office on North Buffalo in Las Vegas on December 10, but local pro-life advocates only recently discovered that had happened. The abortion center was set back from the street in a business park in which it was located, so Operation Rescue president Troy Newman told LifeNews today that, when the eviction notice was posted, pro-life supporters were not immediately aware of it.
We knew that this office had closed, but we only got news of Silver s eviction last week, he said. This eviction is just more evidence of a failing abortion industry and of an abortionist who cannot or will not follow the law and keep his contractual obligations.
The building was sealed by authorities with an orange sticker that reads Warning, Keep Out, but the sticker has been broken, Newman said.
With the closing of one of Silver s Las Vegas abortion facilities, Newman says there are now six abortion clinics left in Nevada with five of them operating in Las Vegas and one in Reno. Since 1991, over two-thirds of all surgical abortion clinics have closed across the country. Full story at LifeNews.com
40 Days for Life Campaign Ends, 483 Babies Saved From Abortion
Well, here we are the final day of the first 40 Days for Life campaign of 2011. And what an amazing campaign it has been with a record 247 locations! But that s not the milestone.
So far during this campaign, we are aware of 483 babies who have been saved from abortion. (And reports from local teams will still be coming in for the next week or so. So we hope and pray that number will continue to grow.) But that s not the milestone.
Since 40 Days for Life started these coordinated campaigns in September of 2007, we now know of more than four thousand babies spared from abortion! And yes, THAT is the milestone! The current total is 4,082!
4,082 people is a lot of folks! If you ve ever heard of Centerville, Tennessee or Lathrop, Missouri those are towns whose populations are around 4,082. Through your prayers, God has spared enough human beings to fill a whole town. Wow!!!
I can only wonder what our Lord will do next! Today we start in Manassas, Virginia and the amazing witness of a mom with her three young daughters by her side. Full story at LifeNews.com
Indiana Senate Votes to End Tax Funding of Planned Parenthood
The Indiana state Senate today voted to end taxpayer funding of the Planned Parenthood abortion business less than a week after Democrats in the U.S. Senate voted down a House Republican measure yanking federal funding.
State senators voted to add a measure that was not brought up earlier in the year to a larger pro-life bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy because unborn children are capable of feeling massive pain at that point in pregnancy. The state Senate voted 36 to 13 to add the de-funding provision to HB 1210, which has the strong support of pro-life groups like Indiana Right to Life and the Indiana Family Institute.
Sen. Scott Schneider, a Republican, authored the amendment to the bill, according to an Indianapolis Star news report, and he said plenty of other legitimate medical centers offer the kinds of services Planned Parenthood does without also functioning as an abortion business.
If (Planned Parenthood) wants to receive taxpayer money, he said, They can simply stop practicing abortion.
The amendment is similar to a bill Republican Rep. Matt Ubelhor offered earlier in the legislative session that failed on a procedural hurdle when state Democrats walked out of the legislature in a manner similar to Democrats in Wisconsin who received national attention. Full story at LifeNews.com
Catholic Obama Apologist Kmiec Resigns as Malta Ambassador
After facing criticism from the State Department for spending too much time trying to defend President Barack Obama to Catholics, Douglas Kmiec says he will resign from his position as the ambassador to Malta.
Kmiec, the Pepperdine University law professor who become one of the leading apologists for electing pro-abortion President Barack Obama, won an ambassadorship from the president to Malta but he came under fire earlier this month in a report claiming he neglected his duties. The report said Kmiec was told he needs to spend less time on personal writings and more time on the duties of the U.S. embassy and, after promising he would get his act together, Kmiec was admonished a second time.
Yesterday, Kmiec wrote Obama and said he would resign in August.
I doubt very much whether one could ever spend too much time on this subject, Kmiec wrote Obama in his resignation letter, according to an AP report.
Kmiec wrote to Obama: The OIG expressed dissatisfaction with the extent of time that I have devoted to promoting what I know you believe in most strongly namely personal faith and greater mutual respect I doubt very much whether one could ever spend too much time on this subject With the highest respect for your leadership, and with some understanding of the difficulty and complexity of the challenges that you and Secretary (of State Hilary) Clinton face each day, I ask that you accept my resignation effective on the feast of the Assumption, 2011.
Kmiec told the Times of Malta, Over the last days since the report came out, I have prayed that there might be some way short of having the president affirm my credentials personally to remove this doubt in my mind, and he insisted in the interview that no one from the Obama administration had pressured him to resign. North Carolina Legislators Look to De-Fund Planned Parenthood
With Congress having failed to de-fund the Planned Parenthood abortion business thanks to Democrats in the Senate, now, North Carolina legislators are looking to yank state taxpayer funding. House Republicans approved a measure to remove federal funds from the pro-abortion organization, but the Senate declined to follow suit. Less than a week later, Republican state lawmakers in the North Carolina legislature are looking to take Planned Parenthood out of the state budget. Full story at LifeNews.com
Manchin Blasted by Pro-Life Group for Funding Planned Parenthood
West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin is earning strong criticism from a pro-life group who says the self-declared pro-life senator who is working overtime to cover up his support for the Planned Parenthood abortion business. Manchin joined every one of his fellow Democrats in the Senate last week in voting down a House-approved resolution that would have yanked taxpayer funding for the abortion business in the long-term budget Congress approved for the remainder of the year. Then, late last week, he announced to the media that he has filed a bill that would supposedly put safeguards in place to prevent Title X money that goes to Planned Parenthood from paying for abortions . The Catholic Case for Embryo Adoption
The issue of embryo adoption, having leftover embryos frozen in liquid nitrogen thawed and implanted in an adoptive mother s womb, is a thorny subject in Catholic moral theology and ethics circles. I ve wrestled with this idea for years, and I think we need to continue attending to it in a serious and substantive way. Full story at LifeNews.com
