Interim President of HLI condemns appeals court ruling allowing for the destruction of embryonic human beings for fruitless research

ROME, Italy, May 2, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- "Friday's preposterous ruling by the District of Columbia Court of Appeals must be condemned by all people of good will," said Monsignor Ignacio Barreiro-Carámbula, interim president of Human Life International. "These activist judges have shown utter disdain not only for nascent human life, but for law and for those who hope to benefit from advances in stem cell research."

The 2-1 ruling reversed a lower court's decision affirming a 1996 law which explicitly prohibited federal funding for the creation and destruction of human embryos for research purposes. The DC court in its majority opinion Friday argued that the language of the 1996 law was ambiguous, and that federal funds could indeed be used for embryonic destructive research.

"The court's ruling, and its subsequent affirmation by the Obama administration, leave no doubt as to the radical nature of their commitment to death, as they would rather err on the side of death than on the side of life," said Monsignor Barreiro. "Almost no one in this field expects cures to come from embryonic stem cells, yet the president, years behind the times and in defiance of all scientific trends, still apparently thinks that such cures are likely. This is truly astonishing."

"Not only will the tiniest human beings be destroyed for this fruitless research, but funds will be denied for research that has actually produced life saving results, research into stem cells donated from adults and from umbilical cord blood. It is unconscionable that the administration and its anti-life allies in the courts are so radically committed to the destruction of life that they will not acknowledge developments in the field that make this research obsolete with respect to saving lives," said Monsignor Barreiro. "And they ignore explicit laws that prohibit the funding. This is not compassion or respect for science, this is pure, unapologetic evil."
