Planned Parenthood's "huge, wonderful, important" birth control victory is an assault on women's health

A jubilant Cecile Richards, Planned Parenthood Federation of America's CEO, trumpeted to supporters on Monday:

Huge, wonderful, important news: Today, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that it will require all new insurance plans to cover birth control without co-pays under the new health reform law.

This is one of the biggest victories for women's health in a generation-and you helped make it happen. It took years for us to get to this point.

The free birth control she rightfully claims as a huge victory for Planned Parenthood is, in fact, a huge assault on women's health and the conscience rights of millions of Americans.

The HHS ruling requires provision of free Group 1 carcinogens for women in the form of oral contraceptives. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, an arm of the World Health Organization, lists estrogen-progestogen oral contraceptives among 106 other deadly substances like arsenic, asbestos, and tobacco on its most dangerous list of substances-those classified as "carcinogenic to humans."

The deadly effects of contraception on babies, women, the environment, and marriages are well documented. See our website www.thepillkills.com for more information.

As predicted by American Life League, the vehicle used to require the coverage of abortifacient birth control-and eventually surgical abortion-under the guise of preventive medicine is a Trojan horse.  Obamacare provided the Trojan horse in the form of a health benefits advisory committee established in the Affordable Care Act. The Institute of Medicine's (IOM) Committee on the Determination of Essential Health Benefits is today charged with making recommendations to the secretary of HHS, Kathleen Sebelius, on the criteria for determining what constitutes essential health benefits for insurance plans sold in exchanges.

Secretary Sebelius, former governor of Kansas, gives credit to Planned Parenthood for raising substantial funds for her gubernatorial bid.  And Planned Parenthood's encroachment upon the rights of individuals and religious institutions multiplies under her watch as secretary of HHS.

The religious exemption crafted in connection with the mandate is so narrow that it applies only to nonprofit organizations, and limits the definition of a religious employer to "one that:  (1) has the inculcation of religious values as its purpose; (2) primarily employs persons who share its religious tenets; (3) primarily serves persons who share its religious tenets; and (4) is a nonprofit organization."

Thus, millions of Catholics would be required to provide and/or participate in insurance plans with free birth control coverage.  It also appears it would force Catholic health care institutions to either provide the coverage, or cease employing and serving non-Catholics.

You can read the guidelines and the exemption in full here.  See our action alert below.

Planned Parenthood anticipates bottomless money pit from free contraceptives

Planned Parenthood has been lobbying for free birth control through its Birth Control Matters campaign, not for the sake of women, but to increase its financial bottom line.

While it claims free birth control will save taxpayers and insurance companies money in the long run by eliminating "unplanned" children, Planned Parenthood's sidekick, the Guttmacher Institute, reports that over half of the women who become pregnant in any given cycle are using some form of birth control.  By throwing a perpetual birth control free-for-all, the abortion giant knows it will increase its sexually transmitted disease treatment business and its abortion business.

In addition, if Planned Parenthood can hand out free prescription birth control to everyone who walks in the door-not just those who qualify for free pills and devices under Medicaid, Title X, and other government programs-its cash registers will broadcast one long, sustained ka-ching!

And who will pay those billions of dollars in co-pays our government will require to be absorbed by the insurance companies?  You and I, of course, through increased insurance premiums.

Hitting taxpayers in both pockets, the government will use the money out of our taxpayer pocket to purchase birth control for Medicaid, Title X, and other low-income recipients, and the money from our insurance premium pocket to pay for everyone else's birth control.

By obtaining government sanctioning of its offerings as "preventive," Planned Parenthood will ensure a perpetual stream of income into its coffers from both of our pockets. Quoting its policy position statement on birth control and other preventive care: "More than 90 percent of the care Planned Parenthood health centers offer nationwide is preventive."

Action Alert: Tell HHS you object to the contraceptive free-for-all

Since Planned Parenthood has declared that 90 percent of its "services" are preventive, you can bet it is shooting for at least 90 percent of its income to be provided by the taxpayer and insurance policy owners of this nation.

HHS must accept public comments on its ruling over the next 60 days. It is critical that people of good will contact HHS and register their disgust with this mandate that we must pay for other people's birth control-against morality, against our will, and against our religious convictions.

Please go to our

action center today and let HHS and other government agencies involved know that this rule is unacceptable and must be repealed.
Bringing Jesus to Planned Parenthood through Mary: Invoking her protection, drying up the money supply

When we

bring Jesus to Planned Parenthood through Mary, we are invoking her protection over the innocent children who will be killed there, over the boys and girls who will be robbed of their innocence there, and over the aborting mothers who will lose their souls there.

Recent history has proven beyond a doubt that defunding Planned Parenthood thwarts all of its efforts. Let us today renew our efforts to bring Jesus to Planned Parenthood through Mary, asking Our Blessed Mother's protection over all who enter there, and asking her to dry up the stream of funding that keeps the doors to this hell-on-earth open.

New Jersey Planned Parenthood predicts seven more closures if Title X is eliminated

We reported last week that two Planned Parenthood centers in New Jersey have closed as a result of Governor Chris Christie's executive veto of $7.5 million in family planning funding in 2010 and again in 2011.

The Planned Parenthood Affiliates of New Jersey website

reveals the following cuts due to the loss of state funding:

  • Planned Parenthood of Central New Jersey has been forced to cut hours and services at all six health centers and anticipates seeing 3,000 fewer patients this year.  Additionally, waiting time for appointments at all health centers has increased.  The wait time for a new patient or annual exam in the Shrewsbury health center has increased from three days to two weeks.
  • The Planned Parenthood of Greater Northern New Jersey's health center in Elizabeth served more than 900 fewer patients in 2010 than they did in 2009 due to staff reductions and restructuring.  The same agency's health center in Plainfield served more than 300 fewer patients for the same reasons.
  • Planned Parenthood Association of the Mercer Area's three health centers in Trenton, Hamilton and on the campus of The College of New Jersey are anticipating that they will only be able to see approximately 4500 patients in 2011 (3000 less patients than in 2009).  The health center in Trenton will reduce hours by 40 percent and Hamilton will transition into a fee for service only health center.  Overall, staff at this agency has been reduced by 15 percent.

In addition, it says seven Planned Parenthood sites would close if Title X funding were eliminated:

  • Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan New Jersey (Essex and Passaic Counties) will likely close three of its six sites and eliminate its education department.
  • Planned Parenthood Association of the Mercer Area (Mercer County) would downsize resulting in a loss of services to about 3000 patients.
  • Planned Parenthood of Central New Jersey (Middlesex and Monmouth Counties) would likely close two of their six sites.
  • Planned Parenthood of Greater Northern New Jersey (Bergen, Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren Counties) will close its Flemington (Hunterdon County) and Phillipsburg  (Warren County) sites in addition to the Dover (Morris County) site that closed due to state cuts.
  • Planned Parenthood of Southern New Jersey (Atlantic, Camden, Burlington) would downsize resulting in a loss of services to about 5000 patients.

Contact your members of Congress today and insist that they defund Planned Parenthood as a first step to eliminating waste in the budget.
