"It's time to return the abortion issue back to the states.”
My words were true then (Mark Harrington, 1/18/06, USA Today), and they are even more true today.
The reason is simple. To protect preborn babies we must do the hard work of changing public opinion. And the best way to impact the national debate over abortion is to affect it state by state. Why?
- State legislatures (and the people directly) are more responsive than our U.S. Congress and thus are more likely to pass laws and ballot initiatives that can directly challenge Roe v. Wade. We've seen this recently with Ohio's Heartbeat Bill (HB 125).
- Because of the electoral college, swing states have a huge impact on electing presidents who can nominate strict constructionists to the U.S. Supreme Court. These justices, if given the right case, can declare Roe v. Wade unconstitutional and return the abortion issue back to the states.
The key to outlawing abortion is to win hearts and minds one battleground state at a time. And thankfully, that is what is happening. For thirteen years I have been investing primarily in the perennial swing states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida. And it is paying off!

Because hearts are changing, pro-life laws are being passed in these states. For example, a recent NARAL press release stated, "From 2002 to 2010, three anti-choice measures were enacted in Ohio. In sharp contrast, four anti-choice bills have been enacted in just the last six months!” Now that's progress!
