Lifeissues Newsletter #653

Lifeissues.net: clear thinking about crucial issues
Dear Friends for Life,
This week I would like to introduce an awesome short video entitled "Camels, Cartoons, and Plan B" recently put out by Population Research Institute. This video explains how Plan B functions. Steven Mosher, President of PRI, says: "Our three-minute video will make you laugh out loud, while teaching you how Plan B reliably produces negative pregnancy tests. You will not only want to watch it yourselves, but also to share it with others who may be tempted to use Plan B." Click to view: http://www.pop.org/content/plan-b

The page also includes vocabulary explanations to easily understand the contents. In addition,  check out the following related materials:

1. How does Plan B One-Step work - You can check out the Plan B one-step website here and find them saying that their product does act to prevent implantation.

2. "The Pill: Contraceptive or Abortifacient?" - An interesting article by "The Atlantic".

3. "Christianity Today" has an article "Does Plan B Cause Abortion?" giving voice to both sides of the issue.

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

(Life): "One More Soul"One More Soul (OMS) is a pro-life, pro-family organization dedicated to educating others on the gift of children and to the harms of contraception. OMS helps couples to be open to life and to build a civilization of love. In fulfilling its mission, One More Soul offers over 350 CDs, books, DVDs, Mp3's, articles and pamphlets to educate and convince people that children are wonderful blessings from God and that contraception and sterilization are very harmful to women, marriage, and society.

ITEM #1: Profound wonder is the way to welcome babies with fatal conditions

Anencephaly is a severe form of spina bifida where a failure of fusion of the neural rube in early pregnancy results in the baby developing without cerebral hemispheres, including the neocortex, which is responsible for cognition. The remaining brain tissue is often exposed, ie, not covered by bone or skin. ...at the risk of being accused of trying to defend the 'indefensible', let me give twenty reasons why I believe parents (and doctors) should think twice about aborting a baby with anencephaly, and why I believe we as a society should be advocating an alternative approach.

****************************************

ITEM #2:
Marriage, Same-Sex Relationships and the Catholic Church

In the following address Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Springfield, Illinois shows himself to be another articulate and courageous bishop in his defence of marriage.
****************************************

ITEM #3: In Defense of the Church's Challenging Language on Homosexuality

When considering the pastoral language the Church should use in speaking about homosexuality, the guiding principle must be what then Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger wrote about the subject in 1986, writing as the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith: "Only what is true can ultimately be pastoral."

****************************************

ITEM #4: Abortion and Murder's Eroding Distinction

Government-approved slaying of babies is not a recent phenomenon. Infanticide was practiced in cultures around the world throughout history. In some cultures infants were sacrificed to their gods. In ancient Greece and Rome, it was permissible for fathers to leave infants outside to die.
****************************************

ITEM #5: Going too far with DNR?

Sometimes resuscitating a patient can seem unwarranted or extreme, and people wonder whether it would be okay to fill out a "Do Not Resuscitate" order (DNR) for themselves or for a family member.
****************************************
ITEM #6: Who Has the Right to Live?
Killing is not a form of giving. "Getting" does not ensure a "preferred state." We all have the inalienable right to live. What we do not have is the right to judge who shall and who shall not live. Nor does anyone have the right to implement such a judgment.

****************************************

ITEM #7 What Happens to Unborn Babies After Abortion? Pathologists Share the Horrors
Let me tell you something: there's no war on women. You think about it, when a woman is pregnant, what happens? People get up, they give her their seat, they get out of the way, they say, "you can go first." There is great respect and love for pregnant women. There isn't a war on them. The war is on their babies! That's where the war is. Babies that cannot defend themselves.
****************************************

ITEM #8: Educating for Character in the Sexual Domain
Before the sexual revolution, the societal norm was to treat sex as a serious matter, requiring prudent moral boundaries that channel this powerful drive in ways that benefit, rather than hurt, the individual, family, and society. More recently, popular culture has made sex seem like a casual thing. But in truth, as growing evidence makes clear, sex is an act that is full of consequences. That is a good reason to save it for marriage, and a good reason for character educators to support that goal.

ITEM #9: Be Pro-Life Unconditionally, Denver Archbishop Says

During the Denver archdiocese's "White Mass," Archbishop Aquila urged Catholic medical workers to be "unconditionally" pro-life, criticizing those who perform medical killing in the name of conscience.
****************************************
ITEM #10: Quebec Euthanasia, putting the elderly at risk: A personal experience.

The current euthanasia debate in Quebec frightens me. As a woman of a certain age, I fear I am heading into a future where I may lose meaningful control of my life. Whether I live or die may hinge on the kindness of individuals unknown to me, perhaps nurses or doctors, who will be put in the position of determining my worth.

****************************************
ITEM #11: Disability - a fate worse than death?
The day after the Tasmanian Euthanasia & Assisted Suicide bill was defeated, disability activist, author and editor of the ABC's Ramp Up website on disability, Stella Young shared her concerns about the Tasmanian euthanasia bill and euthanasia in general.
****************************************
ITEM #12: No Second Chances: International experience shows legal euthanasia is never just for exceptional cases.
This paper will briefly examine Quebec's proposal and compare it with the situations in Oregon, Washington State, and the Netherlands.
