“Lobbying for many of the same issues”
Planned Parenthood and California Catholic Conference find common ground
When the California Catholic Conference and Planned Parenthood held their respective legislative lobbying days on April 22, there was not even the hint of a skirmish between the two groups, even though each brought contingents in the hundreds to Sacramento and held competing rallies on the state capitol grounds.
“By mere coincidence, Planned Parenthood’s Capitol Day landed on the same day as the California Catholic Conference’s Lobby Day, but there was little interaction between the two groups who were lobbying for many of the same issues, including funding health care for the poor,” wrote Sarah Joye, a research associate for Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California on the self-described “progressive” blog, California Progress Report.
Except for a small band of about a half dozen determined Catholic pro-lifers who went to Sacramento specifically to raise the issue of state funding for abortion – over the objections of California C atholic Conference executive director Ned Dolejsi -- there was nothing on the agenda of the Catholic Conference to trouble Planned Parenthood.
