Pollster Says Republican Chances of Winning House Look Good, Senate Split
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- If the most recent polls, voter turnout and analysis of momentum in the November midterm elections are any indication, one pollster says Republicans have a good chance at winning the House and coming close to a 50-50 split in the Senate. That would bode well for the pro-life community as it attempts to stop the Obama abortion agenda.
One of the biggest signs of a Republican landslide came in the new Gallup poll showing Republicans have a 10% advantage over Democrats in the general Congressional ballot -- the largest advantage in history.
A new poll from Kaiser finds support for the pro-abortion ObamaCare plan at its lowest levels in its polling, taking away a key issue Democrats hoped to use to motivate their base.
And a new study circulating among top Republicans shows that in 15 of 16 races this year with closed party primaries, Republicans turned out more voters than Democrats -- a possible prediction of the turnout in November. Some 15.5 million Republican votes have been cast this year, compared to nearly 12.1 million Democratic votes.
Larry Sabato, a Virginia college professor known as one of the best election forecasters in the nation, tells CQ he thinks Republicans can pick up the House.
"Given what we can see at this moment, Republicans have a good chance to win the House by picking up as many as 47 seats, net," he said. Full story at LifeNews.com
Pro-Life Group Wants to Keep GOP Leaders Accountable on Opposing Abortion
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- All of the polling, turnout models and anecdotal evidence make it appear Republicans have a good chance at capturing one or both houses of Congress after the November elections. Although the GOP passed several pro-life bills the last time it controlled Congress, one pro-life group wants to keep its leaders accountable.
Congressional Democrats have worked closely with President Barack Obama to see through the enactment of his pro-abortion agenda.
Although Republicans can't get Obama to sign pro-life bills, the Susan B. Anthony List wants to ensure they can be counted on to do everything possible to counteract Obama's abortion promotion.
Today, SBA launched its Life Speaking Out Campaign which it tells LifeNews.com is "aimed at encouraging House GOP leadership to make protecting women and the unborn a priority in its legislative blueprint expected after Labor Day."
The campaign includes a website for pro-life activists to lobby House GOP leadership (www.LifeSpeakingOut.com) and an encouraging letter to leadership signed by SBA List president Marjorie Dannenfelser.
The Republican Party must show what it is made of this time around. They can do so by acting on their convictions and those of their party, and by making a commitment to passage of common-sense, life-saving legislation, said Dannenfelser. Full story at LifeNews.com
MLK Jr. Niece Comes Under Further Attack for Pro-Life Position on Abortion
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The fact that the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is not only pro-life but outspoken about it is worrying abortion activists. After a pro-abortion religious group criticized Alveda King, now U.S. News & World Report columnist Bonnie Erbe is after her.
In a Tuesday column, Erbe slammed King for comparing abortion to racism and suggested the woman who regrets her abortions co-opted her uncle s legacy to flog issues not central to the civil rights era.
Erbe s complaint related to King s appearance at the August 28 Restoring Honor rally in Washington. King touched on abortion in passing during the speech -- mentioning the womb war that threatens the fabric of our society -- but that was enough for Ebre, who took her to task for trying to twist Dr. King s record to one s own politics.
Instead of addressing King's points at the rally, Erbe brought up a 2008 comment linking abortion and racism: The error is thinking that when someone stands in the way of our wants, we can justify getting that person out of our lives, she quoted King as saying. Abortion and racism stem from the same poisonous root, selfishness.
Nathan Burchfiel of the Culture and Media Institute noticed the column and said Erbe "didn't address King s characterization of abortion as selfish." Full story at LifeNews.com
California Senate Debate Sees Barbara Boxer, Carly Fiorina Clash on Abortion
Sacramento, CA (LifeNews.com) -- Carly Fiorina and Barbara Boxer clashed on the issue of abortion during a heated debate Wednesday night. Boxer attacked Fiorina's pro-life views and accused her of wanting to put women in jail if abortions are made illegal, but Fiorina stood her ground and said she would support overturning Roe v. Wade.
Fiorina said she would support reversing Roe if the opportunity presented itself. That's the Supreme Court case that ushered in an era of 52 million abortions and injuring millions of women physically and emotionally.
Women would die like they did before Roe v. Wade, Boxer said of Fiorina's stance of overturning Roe -- even though a leading pre-Roe abortion advocate, Bernard Nathanson, has admitted to faking the numbers of women dying before the high court's decision.
"What the people of California have to understand is that if my opponent's views prevailed, women and doctors would be criminals," Boxer, the pro-abortion champion in the Senate, claimed. "They would go to jail. And women would die like they did before Roe v. Wade."
Fiorina said she is pro-life in part from personal experience related to adoption and admitted, "not everybody agrees with me on this."
She said that while Boxer wants unlimited abortion mandated by the nation's highest court, Fiorina said she is a "strong believer in states rights" and "I am prepared to trust the voters' judgment." Full story at LifeNews.com
Florida Governor: Rick Scott Picks Pro-Life Running Mate, Ties Sink in New Poll
Tallahassee, FL (LifeNews.com) -- Florida gubernatorial candidate Rick Scott is earning praise from a pro-life group for selecting a pro-life lieutenant governor running mate. That comes as a new poll shows Scott leading pro-abortion Democrat Alex Sink by just one percent after independent Bud Chiles withdrew from the race.
Scott's campaign announced he has selected State Representative Jennifer Carroll of Jacksonville to be his running mate as Lt. Governor.
The Florida Family Policy Council told LifeNews.com today Carroll "has been a consistent and solid supporter of pro-life and pro-family issues that have come before her in the legislature."
Carroll was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2003 and was the first black Republican woman elected to the Florida Legislature. She went to the legislature after serving a 20 year career in the U.S. Navy.
FFPC President John Stemberger told LifeNews.com, "I could not be more pleased at the selection of Jennifer Carroll for Lt. Governor as she is a true friend of the family."
"I applaud Rick Scott for his principled decision making in selecting such a reliable social conservative such as Jennifer Caroll as his running mate," he added.
Meanwhile, the latest Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey of likely voters, released today, shows Scott picking up 45% of the vote while Sink draws support from 44%. Full story at LifeNews.com
Indiana Senate Hopeful Ellsworth Accused of Misleading on Health Care, Abortion
Indianapolis, IN (LifeNews.com) -- Indiana Senate candidate Brad Ellsworth is facing criticism from a state pro-life group that says he is misleading Hoosiers on the ObamaCare bill Congress approved. Ellsworth says the bill does not contain abortion funding, but Indiana Right to Life disputes his contention.
Ellsworth told Louisville's WAVE news on Monday that he could vote for the government-run health care bill in part because it doesn't fund abortions.
"After hundreds of hours of debate, as a pro-life member of Congress I was comfortable voting for the bill, and that the bill did not spend one penny of taxpayer's dollars on an abortion," he said.
But Mike Fichter of Indiana Right to Life says pro-life experts view the legislation much differently.
"Senate candidate Brad Ellsworth is now misleading Hoosiers on the abortion problems with the federal health bill he supported," he said in an email to LifeNews.com. "Unfortunately, Ellsworth's statement is at complete odds with pro-life analysis of the bill, including that of the United Stated Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)." Full story at LifeNews.com
Washington Senate Race Still Tight, Pro-Life Rossi Leads Pro-Abortion Murrary
Olympia, WA (LifeNews.com) -- The Washington Senate race remains tight just two weeks after voters participated in the state's primary election. The latest Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey of likely voters shows challenger Dino Rossi attracting 48% of the vote compared with 46% for pro-abortion incumbent Sen. Patty Murray.
Another three percent prefer a different candidate, and three percent are still undecided about the candidates.
"Earlier this month, Murray had a slight edge. However, the race has been very close all along," Rassmusen points out. "In ten surveys conducted since January, the candidates have been within two points of each other seven times. Rossi has twice held a three-point advantage and Murray once had a four-point edge."
"Since May, Rossi has attracted support from either 47% or 48% of the vote in five out of six surveys. During that same time frame, Murray has been between 47% and 49% of the vote in five of six surveys," the polling firm stated.
Because of the closeness of the race, Rasmussen has changed its rating of it from leaning towards the Democratic candidate to a tossup. Full story at LifeNews.com
Americans United for Life Targets Pro-Abortion Democrats in Three States
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Americans United for Life is targeting three pro-abortion Democrats in tight election contests with radio ads talking about abortion issues. The ads are also meant to be the first by the group following a Supreme Court decision striking down some of the McCain-Feingold advertising limits.
AUL Action, a 501(c)4 lobbying organization, has its ads set on Reps. John Boccieri of Ohio, Christopher Carney of Pennsylvania and Baron Hill of Indiana
They are meant to test the latitude given to such groups to communicate with the public about candidates in the Supreme Court's decision in January overturning provisions of the campaign finance legislation limiting the rights of citizens groups like AUL.
Before the ruling, AUL has to stick to issue ads about elected officials but could not wander into the debate over which candidate should be approved for certain federal offices.
The Associated Press obtained audio clips of the ads from a Republican strategist and AUL has confirmed the authenticity of them. The ads are one-minute in length and slated to begin Friday and run for one week criticizing the abortion advocates for supporting the pro-abortion health care bill. Full story at LifeNews.com
British Professor David Marsland Criticized for Pro-Eugenics Sterilization Comment
London, England (LifeNews.com) -- Professor David Marsland, an Emeritus Scholar of Sociology and Health Sciences at Brunel University and a fellow at the University of Buckingham, is facing criticism from pro-life advocates for saying people who are mentally "unfit" should be forcibly sterilized.
Marsland told the BBC radio program Iconoclasts over the weekend that permanent sterilization is a good remedy for child abuse.
Children are abused or grossly neglected by a very small minority of inadequate parents," and those parents stand out because of their 'moral and mental inadequacies," caused by serious mental defect, chronic mental illness and the use of drug and alcohol.
Short of lifetime incarceration, they should face permanent sterilization.
Marsland also proposes sterilization for the children of such parents.
Why should we allow further predictable victims to be harmed by the same perpetrators? Here too, sterilization provides a dependable answer," he says. Full story at LifeNews.com
World Youth Conference Ends in Pro-Abortion Controversy and Chaos
León, Mexico (LifeNews.com) -- The World Youth Conference (WYC) closed in León, Mexico last week with frustrated and confused delegates adopting what is being called the Declaration of Guanajuato, which will be presented to the UN (United Nations) General Assembly later this month.
Delegates became increasingly frustrated as they were shut out of the negotiating process. Unlike at the United Nations where meetings are open to any delegation wishing to make amendments, at the WYC delegates were told that meetings were closed and that they should submit written amendments to the "drafting committee," comprised of a handful of countries.
While some delegations tried to comply with this procedure, tensions built as delegates were unable to locate the drafting committee to submit their proposals and conference volunteers had to scramble to find the room where the drafters were sequestered.
At the final session, several countries complained about the lack of transparency and the chaotic process. When the chairman attempted to force immediate adoption of the declaration, Chile, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Bolivia and the United States pushed back pointing out that many delegations had not even been able to review the document because of translation delays.
