Congress to Vote on Pro-Embryonic Stem Cell Research Bill Later This Month
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Members of Congress are expected to vote later this month on legislation that would force taxpayer funding of embryonic stem cell research. The bill is a response to a judge's decision saying the executive order President Barack Obama issued to mandate funding violates a federal law.
Judge Royce Lamberth's decision said the order runs afoul of the Dickey-Wicker law Congress has approved annually since 1996, which prohibits taxpayer funding of research that destroys human embryos.
The Obama administration has appealed the decision, but pro-abortion Rep. Diana DeGette of Colorado is pushing for the House to approve her bill that would essentially repeal the law and authorize the embryonic funding Obama wanted.
In an interview with Politico this morning, DeGette says she believes momentum is building for the legislation in the wake of Judge Lamberth's decision and she believes her bill will pass this month.
DeGette also appeared to be motivated by political concerns -- and wants to use the issue of funding embryonic stem cell research as a way to turn out more votes.
"[T]he stars are pretty well aligned," she said. "This is a positive wedge issue. Supporters can use it in an election because there is strong public support and its opponents look extreme." Full story at LifeNews.com
Pro-Abortion Senate Democratic Leader Tied With Pro-Life Challenger Angle
Carson City, NV (LifeNews.com) -- The leader of the pro-abortion Democrats in the Senate is tied in a new poll with pro-life challenger Sharron Angle in what is one of the marquee Senate races this November. A new Rasmussen Reports poll shows Reid tied at 45 percent with Angle, but he leads when leaners are included.
The latest Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey of likely voters in Nevada shows the candidates tied with 5 percent backing another candidate and 6 percent undecided.
Reid and Angle were tied two weeks ago at 47% a piece in the previous Rasmussen poll and pollster Scott Rasmussen says Reid has seen his standing improve as he has spent millions on television commercials throughout the state.
"Earlier this year, Reid was considered to be one of the Senate's most vulnerable incumbents. He picked up just 39% of the vote following Angle's primary victory but has seen his own numbers improve to 41% in late June, 43% in early July, 45% in late July and 47% in mid-August," Rasmussen said.
"This is the first survey since Angle's victory which failed to show an increase in support for Reid. However, the current numbers match the average of the last three surveys suggesting a level of stability has entered the race," he added. Full story at LifeNews.com
Pro-Life Group Says Population Control Advocate James Lee Protested Its Event
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A national pro-life organization says James Lee, the population control activist Maryland police shot and killed Wednesday afternoon at the offices of the Discovery Channel, confronted the group during a protest it held at a local Planned Parenthood abortion business.
Lee has been protesting the cable channel for years because he said it was not doing enough to promote population control.
But Lee also appears in a series of videos the pro-life group American Life League took of it protesting at the Planned Parenthood center. Lee tells pro-life activists that more abortions need to happen because more babies would contribute to the "overpopulation" problem.
"You can't say that we can breed as many children as we want," the man in the video, who looks like Lee, says. "You can't just say we gotta fill the earth, have all these children and never mind all the other creatures."
Katie Walker, an ALL spokeswoman, says she is certain the man in the video is Lee.
"That's the guy," she said. "We'll never forget that guy" and added that, given his pro-population control views, "it made sense that he would take umbrage with our event." Full story at LifeNews.com
Troubled Abortion Biz Sees Two Abortion Practitioners Lose Medical Licenses
Philadelphia, PA (LifeNews.com) -- The troubled abortion business Steven Chase Brigham runs in four states got more bad news as two of the abortion practitioners he employees have lost their medical licenses. The Maryland medical licenses of George Shepard, Jr., of Delaware and Nicola I. Riley of Utah, were suspended on Tuesday.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on the suspensions today and said they lost their licenses for helping Brigham skirt the law.
Riley was involved in the botched abortion in Elkton, Maryland, that led to the discovery of Brigham's scheme to circumvent late-term abortion laws by beginning the abortions at his New Jersey centers, which don't meet state health and safety laws to make them eligible to do later-term abortions, then transporting the women to Maryland for completion of the abortion.
Brigham led a car caravan of women from his Vorhees, Pennsylvania abortion center to his Maryland one after one of the patients was critically injured during the abortion at his Pennsylvania abortion business.
According to the News, Brigham put the semiconscious, bleeding woman in the back of a rental car and drove her to a nearby hospital instead of calling for an ambulance and drawing attention to problems at his abortion center, American Women's Services.
The Maryland Board of Physicians and Elkton police compiled documents unveiling the problems and later conducted a raid of his Maryland abortion facility. Authorities who raided Brigham's abortion center discovered the remains of 35 late-term aborted babies. Full story at LifeNews.com
Notre Dame University Fires Pro-Life Staffer for Joining Obama-Abortion Protest
South Bend, IN (LifeNews.com) -- Because he participated in the protest students, staff and pro-life supporters backed when Notre Dame University decided to allow pro-abortion President Barack Obama to give its commencement speech, Associate Vice-President for Residence Life Bill Kirk apparently lost his job.
Father Tom Doyle, Notre Dame's new Vice-President for Student Affairs reportedly fired Kirk, who had spent nearly 22 years with the college.
Dr. David Solomon, a Notre Dame professor, penned a column in the conservative Irish Rover newspaper laying out what happened, and it is already causing a buzz on the Internet and in Catholic circles.
"The decision was both unfair and imprudent. It was unfair, because, as a loyal employee of Notre Dame for almost 22 years—and one who had been placed repeatedly in positions where he took the brunt of public criticism for enforcing policies adopted by his superiors—he deserved better from those superiors than to be removed from office with no notice and with no public explanation for his removal," Solomon wrote.
Solomon noted how Bill and his wife Elizabeth were active in pro-life activities on campus and with the response to the Obama speech.
And as an official faculty advisor to the Right to Life Club, Elizabeth served as primary advisor to the student coalition formed in the spring of 2009 as "NDResponse" and served as a conduit for many, including junior, untenured faculty members, who were unwilling to get involved directly for fear of reprisal.
"Without compromising his administrative duties, Bill stood with the students of NDResponse at their rally on the South Quad on Commencement day," he said. "He was the only senior administrator at Notre Dame willing to do so." Full story at LifeNews.com
Ex-Planned Parenthood Abortion Business in California Faces Criminal IRS Audit
San Francisco, CA (LifeNews.com) -- The regional affiliate of Planned Parenthood where teenager Holly Patterson died from using the dangerous RU 486 abortion drug first lost its affiliation with Planned Parenthood in early August. Now, Planned Parenthood Golden Gate faces an audit form the criminal division of the Internal Revenue Service.
The New York Times released a new report on Thursday detailing how an unnamed former employee interviewed with the Oakland field office of the IRS on Tuesday in response to a complaint he lodged with the governmental agency.
The employee, who would not let the Times name him for fear of his future job prospects, said he filed a two-part complaint about the abortion businesses' problematic relationship with its political arm and about financial problems at the abortion business.
Therese Wilson, interim chief executive of the abortion business -- which has since changed its name to Golden Gate Community Health following the disaffiliation -- told the newspaper she brought in a forensics accountant to review its books and search for problems. Full story at LifeNews.com
Pro-Life Battle Against Tax-Funded Embryonic Stem Cell Research Far From Over
by Mary McClusky
Pro-life Americans can applaud a federal judge's recent decision to block guidelines for taxpayer funding of human embryonic stem cell (ESC) research; yet we should remain vigilant in the fight to protect the lives of our tiniest brothers and sisters.
It is morally wrong to destroy week-old human embryos for research using their stem cells – and funding such experimentation diverts funds from research and treatments that are providing real therapies today using adult stem cell sources.
Critics of the recent ruling argue that millions of dollars will now be wasted -- ignoring the millions of dollars already spent on ESC research without clinical benefit, as well as the many lives already destroyed in this research. Because the human embryos must be obtained from fertility clinics, turning them into sources of research material perpetuates the destructive practices of the infertility industry.
Procedures such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) typically involve the production of many embryos at one time, requiring hyperstimulation of the mother's ovaries that poses risks to the mother's health and even life; "excess" embryos inevitably result and are then frozen or discarded. Children should be seen as God's beautiful gift to a married couple who remain open to His divine plan of love and life, and not as a commodity which we produce, manipulate, and destroy at will. Environmentalists Disclaim Responsibility for Population Control Hostage-Taker
by Steven Mosher
On Wednesday at the Discovery Channel offices in Maryland, environmental activist James Jay Lee took company employees hostage, threatening to kill them unless the media outlet agreed to turn itself into a propaganda channel for population control. The standoff ended when the gun-toting and bomb-laden eco-terrorist was shot dead by a SWAT team.
Lee had earlier outlined his demands on his website, savetheplanetprotest.com, where he posted a 1,100 word manifesto aimed at the Discovery Channel. In it, he demanded that Discovery change its programming and focus on getting rid of people who are "polluting" the planet.
"All programs on Discovery Health-TLC must stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants..." Lee wrote, "...programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility must be pushed. … That means stopping the human race from breeding any more disgusting human babies!"
It is because there are too many people, he exclaims elsewhere on the site, that "Global Warming is a reality. The massive extinction of animals is happening all over the world." Full story at LifeNews.com
Miley Cyrus and LOL Movie Pushes Planned Parenthood Sexual Culture
by Matt Abbott
The evening of September 2, I was walking in downtown Chicago — on my way to an ICE-PAC event — crossing one of the bridges over the Chicago River, when I noticed a police boat motoring along with a movie camera attached to its front.
In the boat were a man and woman who looked to be having a good time: laughing, talking and perhaps playing a little lovey-dovey.
Interesting, I thought. It didn't look like the set of "Transformers 3," the mega-budget Michael Bay flick which had blocked off various streets in the downtown area for the last couple of months, causing additional traffic headaches.
As it turned out, the boat scene was for a forthcoming movie titled "LOL: Laughing Out Loud," starring Miley Cyrus and Demi Moore. Out of curiosity, I did a little Internet research to see what the movie is about. Let me tell you, if you're expecting a G-rated family feature, you can forget it. Miley, according to reports, plays a teenage girl who "has sex, engages in a lesbian kiss and smokes pot." Lovely. Full story at LifeNews.com
California Pro-Life Group Opposes Vandalism of Planned Parenthood Abortion Ctr
Fresno, CA (LifeNews.com) -- A California pro-life group is condemning the vandalism that took place yesterday against a local Planned Parenthood abortion business. Someone threw an object through the window of the Madera facility that may have been intended to cause a fire and damage to the property.
Patsy Montgomery, a Planned Parenthood spokeswoman, told the Fresno Bee newspaper that the abortion business received a call very early Thursday morning about an alarm that had sounded.
Police found someone threw an object through the window that had an accelerant intended to cause a fire, but none started.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Madera Police Department were called to investigate and Montgomery told the Bee the facility will reopen on Tuesday.
"I believe it's extremists who are, want to make a statement," she said of the person or persons responsible. Full story at LifeNews.com
