Lifeissues.net Newsletter 490

Dear Friends for Life,

Sex selection in India in bad state. Due to sex selection abortion, the ratio of girls is continuing its free fall. In 1991, there were 945 girls for every 1,000 boys. In 2001, it was 927. In some areas, it is worse. Wealthy urban families in the Punjab have 300 girls per 1,000 boys. In South Delhi it is 832. In the state Haryana it is 822. This confounds the conventional wisdom expected that as India develops more, more families move into the middle class, more girls go to school and more women join the workforce, that traditional ideas about lesser value of girls will erode. Actually the opposite has happened.

Africa's population is growing. The population of Africa has reached one billion with a rate of increase of about twenty-four million a year. Growth has slowed in North Africa but in Sub-Sahara Africa the average woman has 5.3 children (down from 6.7) compared to the global average of 2.6.

A Catholic voice speaks out. Archbishop R. Burke, head of the Vatican's Apostolic Signatura, the Church's highest Court has stated that Church law is clear. Politicians, who support abortion publicly and despite being formally corrected, continue to overtly support abortion, should definitely be denied Holy Communion. Nor can they worthily receive it.

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

(Focus on Asia): "Aging philanthropist is Pakistan's Mother Teresa" - The aging man in mud-splattered, frayed clothes has barely lowered his body onto the sidewalk when the money starts piling up. Heeding his call for donations for flood victims, Pakistanis of all classes rush to hand over cash to Abdul Sattar Edhi, whose years of dedication to the poor have made him a national icon.

ITEM #1. Talking to your kids about drugs and alcohol

By now you probably know that drugs and alcohol present an insidious threat to your children. But did you know that you are the crucial element in protecting your children? Healthy communication at home is the best path to a promising future free of alcohol and drug abuse.

ITEM #2. Contraception: The Bacteria Devouring America's Soul

Having seen an inordinate number of eloquent commentaries delineating the moral evils of the recent United States District Court decision nullifying the will of California voters on Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage, I am nonetheless left wondering why none of the commentators was able to connect the dots.

Obviously, same-sex "marriage" or even same-sex "civil unions" are a bad idea, particularly if legitimized by a court system that previously put its stamp of approval on contraception and abortion. But why isn't anyone pointing out the obvious root cause of this latest moral and legal debacle? Why isn't anyone hammering on contraception?

ITEM #3. Legal guardians can't pull plug on mentally disabled

"A person's value isn't based on his or her physical or mental abilities," said ADF Legal Counsel Matt Bowman. "No one should be allowed to decide that a person's life is not worth saving just because he or she has a disability or medical condition."

ITEM #4. Sterilize the Unfit Says British Professor

The mentally and morally "unfit" should be sterilized, Professor David Marsland, a sociologist and health expert, said this weekend. The professor made the remarks on the BBC radio program Iconoclasts, which advertises itself as the place to "think the unthinkable.

ITEM #5. Britain's Leading Gay Activist Calls for Lowering of Age of Consent to 14

One of Britain's leading homosexualist activists has called again for the lowering of the age of sexual consent from 16 to 14, saying that this will reduce incidents of sexual abuse of young people. Peter Tatchell, founder of the group OutRage!, wrote on the website Big Think, "Whether we like it or not, many teenagers have their first sexual experience around the ages of 14 or 15."

ITEM #7. HIV/AIDS in Asia

HIV (ie, HIV-1) epidemics in Asia show great diversity, both in severity and timing. But epidemics in Asia are far from over and several countries including China, Indonesia, and Vietnam have growing epidemics. Several factors affect the rate and magnitude of growth of HIV prevalence, but two of the most important are the size of the sex worker population and the frequency with which commercial sex occurs. In view of the present state of knowledge, even countries with low prevalence of infection might still have epidemics affecting a small percentage of the population. Once HIV infection has become established, growing needs for care and treatment are unavoidable and even the so-called prevention-successful countries of Thailand and Cambodia are seeing burgeoning care needs. The manifestations of HIV disease in the region are discussed with the aim of identifying key issues in medical management and care of HIV/AIDS.

ITEM #11. Church intervenes in pastor's euthanasia battle

A situation is unfolding in Canada that is similar to the case of Terri Schiavo, the patient who was starved and dehydrated to death in Florida several years ago. Joshua Kulendran Mayandy, a Sri Lankan native and Pentecostal pastor at Humberlea Worship Centre in Etobicoke, suffered a heart attack and brain damage May 29. He was in a coma but came out of it and has improved. Alex Schadenberg of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition (EPC) tells OneNewsNow Mayandy has no family, no written instructions on what to do, and no power-of-attorney agreement that could affect those decisions.

ITEM #12. Stem-Cell Plaintiffs Cite Ethical Motivation
