"Sarah's Law"
Proposed initiative would require family member chosen by girl affected be notified before minor could undergo abortion
Backers of "Sarah's Law," a proposed family notification initiative designed to protect young girls from dangerous and sometimes fatal complications of abortion, say they have already collected more than 200,000 signatures toward the nearly 700,000 needed to qualify the measure for the June 2008 California ballot.
The initiative takes its name from "Sarah," a 15-year-old girl who died slowly from an overwhelming infection following an abortion she kept secret from her family. Had a family member known about the abortion, it is likely the infection would have been detected early and her life saved.
