Simplifying the Debate: Abortion is Ageism

Simplifying the Debate:  Abortion is Ageism

Columbus, OH – August 2, 2011 - The below interchange took place during Created Equal’s recent talk on bio-ethics to over 100 local high school seniors.

“Abortion is age-based discrimination,”  Mark Harrington said.

The student replied, “But we discriminate based on age all the time.  For example, I can’t drink or drive!  So what’s the difference?”

Here’s the difference:  The right to life is and existence based right recognized at fertilization.  Other privileges (not rights) such as driving, drinking, or defending our country, are not comparable to the right to life because they are only based on what we can do (function).

According to www.amazon.com/Moral-Question-Abortion-Stephen-Schwarz/dp/0829406239" target="_blank">Stephen Schwarz, every argument for abortion is based on one or more of four attributes:  size, level of development, environment, or dependency (SLED).   These are all age-based considerations.  We do not kill born children based on these attributes.  However, we do kill preborn children based on these attributes.  Therefore, the abortion debate can be distilled down to one issue: equality.  Abortion is simply depriving preborn babies of the right to life based solely on their age.  High school and college students can understand this argument.

Equality between the born and preborn is going to be the subject of a new Created Equal sign.  We hope to have it ready for the fall campaign.  Can you help us raise the money to design and purchase several of these signs?  To give a special gift to help Created Equal defend preborn children against age-based discrimination on high school and college campuses, click www.egsnetwork.com/gift/gift.php--Q-giftid--E-89217EA9-AF58-49B1-837B-8CB7CDE..." target="_blank">HERE.
