Dear Friends for Life,
May you all have a beautiful and meaningful Easter today, the source of our support for the Culture of Life. Be assured of my prayers and Mass this morning as we reaffirm our Faith and Trust in a God who loves each one of us very much, including unborn children and their mothers.

(FOCUS ON ASIA): "Dispelling the Myths behind conception, contraception and abortifacient drugs" - There is a significant amount of misinformation circulating regarding human fertilization, embryo implantation and the first week of life. Here are the known scientific facts. http://www.lifeissues.net/writers/willke/willke_10dispellingmyths.html

ITEM #1. Contraception, Lies and the Truth
We are constantly told - by the media, by most of the medical profession, by the echo of our high school "health" teachers - that in order for sex to be "safe" we have to use some thing. We can take a pill, erect a barrier, put ourselves under the surgeon's knife, but somehow we must "protect" ourselves.

ITEM #2. Birth Control and NFP: What's the Difference?
NFP does NOT refer to the so-called "calendar rhythm method," which was based on calendar calculations of a "normal" cycle. NFP, instead, based on direct observations of various signs that occur in a woman's body (changes in the cervix, cervical mucus, and temperature) which tell her when ovulation occurs. These observations are relatively easy to make, take only a few minutes, and work even for irregular cycles. NFP is internationally known and practical and is extremely effective. The medical principles on which NFP rests are being used by more and more doctors for a wide range of purposes. Morally speaking, then, what is it that makes NFP acceptable while artificial birth control is wrong?

ITEM #3. What a Woman Should Know about Contraceptives
The birth control pill is used by over 10 million women in the US today and about 4 million of those are under age 25. The Pill consists of a combination of two types of artificial hormones called estrogens and progestins. It works by inhibiting ovulation and sperm transport and by changing the lining of the inside of a woman's uterus (called the endometrium) so that if the woman does conceive she will often have an early abortion.

ITEM #4. The "Morning-After Pill", Rape Victims and Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services
"A female who has been raped should be able to defend herself against a potential conception from the sexual assault. If after appropriate testing, there is no evidence that conception has occurred already, she may be treated with medications that would prevent ovulation, sperm capacitation, or fertilization. It is not permissible, however, to initiate or to recommend treatments that have as their purpose or direct effect the removal, destruction, or interference with the implantation of a fertilized ovum".

ITEM #5. Large Majority of French Women Agree that Abortion Has Detrimental Psychological Effects
A large majority of French women say that there are too many abortions in their country, and that abortions "leaves psychological traces that are difficult for women to experience" according to a recent national poll.
The study, which was done at the behest of the French Right to Life Alliance (l'Alliance pour les droits de la vie - ADV), found that 83% of women believe that abortion does lasting psychological damage, and 61% believe that there are too many abortions in France.

ITEM #9. "What If Joey Has Two Daddies?"?

ITEM #10. Paper delves into British veterinarians' high suicide risk
Comment: Will the average reader miss the important factors here which we know accounts for assisted suicide and euthanasia among those who are not veterinarians? Examples from the article are" ready access to lethal drugs" "low levels of support "use of "barbiturates" "Thoughts of suicide, which are often impulsive, can be acted on immediately." Those who are isolated are at greater risk. Consider Nitchski who gives workshops on how to kill yourself ..."Ready access to lethal means and knowledge of how to apply them can also put them at risk." "Suicide contagion" The easier it is to have access to lethal poisons to end ones life, and be taught how to end life, the greater the risk for those who are depressed and isolated to say 'to hell with it, I'm done with living'. Indeed "we ought to be ... trying to do what we can to prevent suicide.'" -Cheryl CHN

ITEM #11. Harvard eggs going for US$35,000
Would-be IVF parents are willing to pay as much as US$50,000 for eggs from prestigious universities, according to a study in The Hastings Center Report. And it appears that many donor agencies are paying far more than the top level recommended by the American Society for Reproduction Medicine (ASRM). A sample of over 300 college newspapers showed that almost one-quarter of advertisements offered payment for eggs in excess of $10,000.

ITEM #12. Man believes euthanasia dignified end for wife suffering from Alzheimer's and my comments
Comment: Back in the late 1980s, I wrote an op-ed for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch about the Nancy Cruzan case. In it, I predicted a "rapidly expanding pool of potential victims" if we accepted starving and dehydrating the so-called "vegetative." It didn't take long for people with dementia to become the next target of alleged compassion. Kevorkian's first public victim was in the early stages of Alzheimer's. And now, merely being "tired of life" is being used to justify euthanasia.
My mom had Alzheimer's. My dad is now in failing health with blindness and other debilitating problems and he resides in a nursing home. As a nurse, I see all sorts of human problems but I would never kill my parents or my patients. The real issue isn't how awful Alzheimer's, "vegetative state", etc. might be. It's what euthanasia supporters consider the answer: actually killing these people. And those of us who oppose euthanasia are being demonized as religious fanatics, death deniers, people who want other people to suffer, etc. to help sell euthanasia to the public. Remember the outrageous campaign against Terri Schiavo's family?
However, the most basic of our social contracts is that we don't kill each other. Euthanasia supporters might try to rationalize their actions by citing that the person wants to die or that their condition is an affront to human dignity or now even how that we must conserve our "scarce health care resources" for other, more "productive" people. But note the last line in this article where the husband says he wants to spare others "the pain he has endured watching his wife die in increments." Euthanasia supporters really want to put these vulnerable people out of OUR misery, not theirs. --Nancy Valko, RN
