Human Rights for All--Not So Much

Judie BrownWe are living in a society where too many are training their children to do whatever feels good for them at any given point in time. We are not training our children in morality and love of their fellow human beings-which includes preborn babies. These babies deserve the same human rights that all others deserve. But many people don't think this way, and our society seems to be passing more laws and making it easier for people to do whatever "feels right"-with no concern for anyone else. Today's commentary addresses this and gives concrete examples of why we should all be very worried.

Just days after arguments over the controversial Gardasil vaccine returned to the nationwide headlines because of the GOP presidential debates, a new report suggests that the documented side effects including rheumatoid arthritis could be the result of contamination in the vaccine. The InvestigateHers report cited blood tests from a 13-year-old in Toronto who was given the vaccine and suffered rheumatoid arthritis in multiple joints, and her subsequent treatment for the complications.  "Two years later, Sydney's treating physician ordered an HPV DNA PCR blood test, Genomic DNA extracted was found to be positive for HPV DNA," the report said.  But that was supposed to be impossible since officials said the vaccine did not contain HPV DNA, according to the report written by Garrick Cornelius.

Archbishop José  H. Gomez of Los Angeles marked Respect Life Month by saying that Catholics must defend the unborn and marginalized in society out of fidelity to Christ.  For Catholics, "the defense of unborn life is not a political issue," he said in an Oct. 7 article for the archdiocesan paper The Tidings. "This issue is deeply related to who we are as Catholics, to our identity as disciples of Jesus Christ." Archbishop Gomez urged the faithful to spend the month of October praying together as a Church for an end to "every offense against the sanctity and dignity of the human person" and for all of society to recognize the dignity of every person.
