Students for Life Leader, Unborn Baby Die in Tragic Accident
Students for Life of America, the national organization for pro-life college and university students, has suffered a terrible loss, as one of its staffers and her unborn baby perish and another staffer was injured in a fatal automobile accident Saturday night.

Around 8:00 p.m. local time, SFLA field director Kortney Blythe Gordon was driving back from the Students for Life of America Georgia conference when her vehicle was struck by another head on in a massive collision. The driver of the other vehicle was reportedly speeding and passing cars on a two-lane road. Gordon and her unborn child, Sophy, were immediately killed upon impact and another SFLA staff member, Jon Scharfenberger, is in critical condition following the accident.

In addition, two local students, whose names were not released to LifeNews, were injured in the accident as well, and were in the vehicle with the two Students for Life staffers when they were struck by the oncoming car. They are injured but the injuries are not life-threatening.

The entire team at Students for Life of America is heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend, Field Director, and tireless abortion abolitionist, Kortney Blythe Gordon, and her pre-born daughter, Sophy, a grief-stricken Kristan Hawkins, SFLA president, said in a statement this afternoon. There are no words to describe what a loss we suffer alongside her husband Benjamin and their entire family, but we are comforted knowing that Kortney and her daughter are in the arms of our Lord and Savior.

Please pray for the families of Kortney and Benjamin, for the family of our other gravely injured staffer and his recovery, and for healing for all who were touched by Kortney s infectious spirit and tireless efforts to stop the injustice of abortion in our nation, Hawkins said. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/09/students-for-life-staffer-unborn-baby-die-in-tragic-accident/

122 Babies Spared From Abortion During 40 Days for Life Event
On this Monday morning, more good news to report! Thus far during this 40 Days for Life campaign, we are aware of 122 babies spared from abortion! And of course, those are only the ones we know of.

Here are just a few of the stories behind that number:

-
PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY
-

A married couple was headed into the abortion facility. They have two small children and they re in a bad financial situation. They thought that abortion would be the best way to go.

After talking with one of the vigil participants, they kept their appointment at the clinic only to emerge 45 minutes later. During their appointment they learned that the doctor, who normally doesn t do abortions on Thursdays, said that they should do it right away and that he could be there in an hour.

Instead, they decided to leave. A volunteer called another doctor who was able to see them right away and do an ultrasound.

40 Days for Life volunteers are working on getting support for them so that they are not alone. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/10/122-babies-spared-from-abortion-during-40-days-for-life-event/

Herman Cain Competitive With Barack Obama in New Polls
The tidal wave of recent support for Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain is manifesting itself in two new polls showing the pro-life businessman now running competitively with pro-abortion President Barack Obama.

The first poll, conducted by the firm Poll Position, shows Cain beating Obama in a potential head-to-head matchup by a 43.3 percent to 41.3 percent margin. In the results the firm found in its automated voice survey technology poll, Cain takes a whopping 24 percent of the African-American vote a much higher percentage that actual Republican presidential candidates have received in elections past.

The survey shows 18.2 percent of white voters are undecided while just 4 percent of black voters are undecided in this hypothetical. Also, 12.5 percent of Republicans support Obama in the poll while 18.9 percent of Democrats back Cain. Poll Position s telephone survey of 1,135 registered voters nationwide was conducted October 9 and has a margin of error of three percent and the sample includes 33.4 percent Democrats, 32.2 percent Republicans and 34.2 percent independents.

Meanwhile, a new Rasmussen poll shows Cain has pulled within three points of Obama in its most recent national telephone survey of likely voters. The latest 2012 hypothetical matchup finds the president earning 42% support, while Cain picks up 39% of the vote. Seven percent (7%) prefer some other candidate, and 12% are undecided. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/10/herman-cain-competitive-with-barack-obama-in-new-polls/

Ireland Government Tells UN: We Won t Support Abortion
The government of Ireland has a message for the United Nations Human Rights Council: We re not interested in legalizing abortion. Today, the council published its draft report on Ireland s human rights record as part of the UN s Universal Periodic Review.

The report included recommendations from six countries for Ireland to bring in abortion and, while the Irish government accepted many of the recommendations in the report, it rejected all the calls relating to abortion. The countries that pressured Ireland to introduce abortion were Holland, Germany, Denmark, Slovenia, Norway and Spain.

Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, representing the Irish Government at last week s UPR public session in Geneva, was questioned on a wide range of human rights related issues. Some 60 stakeholders and NGOs made submissions to the Universal Periodic Review involving Ireland.

The Pro Life Campaign, as an accredited NGO of the United Nations, was represented in Geneva by Caroline Simons, legal consultant to the campaign. Responding to the decision to reject abortion, Dr Ruth Cullen of the Pro Life Campaign told LifeNews that her group welcomes the decision of the Government not to support recommendations from a number of countries for Ireland to introduce abortion.

These calls for abortion legislation fly in the face of the UN s own recent research showing that Ireland, without abortion, is a world leader in terms of safety for women in pregnancy, she said. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/10/ireland-government-tells-un-we-wont-support-abortion/

Mammogram Questions Reveal Breast Cancer Risks, Hid Abortion
October is breast cancer awareness month, in case you haven t seen the pink ribbons on practically every consumer item.

According to last week s bulletin from the state health department (KDHE), 1,916 women were diagnosed in Kansas with breast cancer in 2007 (the most recent year for which statistics are available). In 2009, 369 women and 3 men died of breast cancer in Kansas.

The bulletin said, Several lifestyle recommendations may reduce the risk of breast cancer. These include avoiding tobacco, staying active, maintaining a healthy body weight, limiting alcohol intake to one or fewer drinks per day, and increasing fiber intake with whole grains, vegetables, and fruits.

At my mammogram last week, I was asked a series of questions as part of the exam. I was NOT asked anything about smoking, food and alcohol intake or my exercise regimen. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/10/mammogram-questions-reveal-breast-cancer-risks-hid-abortion/

Romney Pledges to De-Fund Planned Parenthood as President
To earn the Republican presidential nomination, businessman and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney must convince pro-life voters that they can trust him to change course on abortion 180 degrees from that of pro-abortion President Barack Obama.

Romney worked on that in his speech before the values Voter Summit on Saturday, where he put forward a more extensive pro-life platform than he typically does in stump speeches.

Our values must also encompass the life of an unborn child, Romney told the thousands of pro-life advocates gathered for the Family Research Council event. There are, of course, strong convictions on both sides of this issue. Yet it speaks well of our country that almost all Americans recognize that abortion is a problem.

The law may call it a right, but no one ever called it a good. And in the quiet of conscience, people of both political parties know that more than a million abortions a year can t be squared with the good heart of America, Romney said.

The former governor pivoted from a philosophical position to talking about his political views and what he would do if elected president.

I support the Hyde Amendment, which broadly bars the use of federal funds for abortions, Romney said, As president, I ll end federal funding for abortion advocates like Planned Parenthood. I ll protect a health care worker s right to follow their conscience in their work. I will nominate judges who know the difference between personal opinion and law. It is long past time for the Supreme Court to return the issue of abortion back to the states by overturning Roe v. Wade, he added. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/10/romney-pledges-to-de-fund-planned-parenthood-as-president/

Abortion and Disabilities: 87% of Downs Die, 64% Spina Bifida
The targeting of unborn children in abortion is especially heartbreaking for parents who have raised children with disabilities and experienced the love and joy they share together.

Now, a new flier produced by Right to Life of Michigan provides some startling stats in terms of the percentage of unborn children diagnosed with various medical conditions who become victims of abortion.

Disabled individuals, no matter what age or status, are human beings worthy of protection. To say a disabled person is less of a human being diminishes the respect for every human life. The value of life does not depend on looks or abilities. There is innate dignity in every human life, it reads. Yet unfortunately, unborn and newborn children with disabilities are the least protected members of society. Masked under the cloak of compassion, innocent human beings are being killed without their consent because their lives are proclaimed not worth living.

The chilling numbers reveal what Right to Life calls the sinister side of abortion.

A study from Wayne State University found that 87% of unborn children diagnosed with Down Syndrome were aborted. An review of studies in several countries showed 92% of unborn children who were diagnosed with Down Syndrome were aborted, RLM says. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/10/abortion-and-disabilities-87-of-downs-die-64-spina-bifida/
