Romney, Cain Lead Republican Field Heading Into GOP Debate
Mitt Romney and Herman Cain sit atop the leaderboard in the Republican race for president heading into the GOP debate tonight as new polls show the two presidential hopefuls leading in early primary states.

New NBC-Marist College surveys have the Massachusetts governor leading and the former businessman right behind him in Iowa and they have Romney with a big lead in New Hampshire on the day of the latest Republican presidential debate.

In the Granite State, 44% of likely Republican primary voters support Romney, who s making his second bid for the presidency. In New Hampshire, 13 percent support Cain and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas is tied with him at that percentage. Texas Gov. Rick Perry, the former front-runner in national polls, saw his stock in the state drop as it has dropped nationally following poor showings in multiple debates. Perry is now at 6 percent compared with 5 percent for former Utah Gov. and U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is at 4%, Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota at 2% and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania as well as former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson each at 1%.

In Iowa, the poll indicates Romney is at 23%, Cain at 20%, Ron Paul at 11%, and Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann each at 10%. Gingrich is at 4%, Santorum 3% and Huntsman at 1% in Iowa. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/11/romney-cain-lead-republican-field-heading-into-gop-debate/

Pro-Life Groups Back Bill to Zap Abortion Funding in Obamacare
Leading pro-life organizations are urging members of Congress on Thursday to pass a bill that would stop abortion funding in Obamacare, the national health care plan that contains no limits on taxpayer funding of abortions.

H.R. 358, Protect Life Act, will likely come up for a vote on the House floor next Thursday after pro-life lawmakers fended off numerous hostile amendments from pro-abortion members of Congress during the committee markup. Capital Hill sources informed LifeNews they expect pro-abortion lawmakers to offer many of those weakening amendments that would water down the bill on the House floor.

The Protect Life Act makes it clear that no funds authorized or appropriated by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), including tax credits and cost-sharing reductions, may be used to pay for abortion or abortion coverage. It specifies that individual people or state or local governments must purchase a separate elective abortion rider or insurance coverage that includes elective abortion but only as long as that is done with private funds and not monies authorized by Obamacare.

The bill also specifies that insurance issuers may offer health plans that include elective abortion and may offer separate elective abortion riders, so long as they ensure PPACA funds are not used for premiums or administrative costs. The bill also clarifies that issuers who offer elective abortion coverage must also offer a qualified health benefits plan that is identical except that it does not cover elective abortion.

ACTION: Contact your member of the House at http://www.house.gov to urge strong support for the Protect Life Act and opposition to any weakening amendments. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/11/pro-life-groups-back-bill-to-zap-abortion-funding-in-obamacare/

Pink Ribbon Scandal: Pro-Life Groups Speak Out Against Komen
With October as the month for breast cancer awareness and Komen for the Cure, which donates to the Planned Parenthood abortion business, holding events across the country, pro-life groups are taking a more active stance speaking out about the problems with the organization.

Texas Right to Life has launched a new effort, Pink Ribbon Scandal, A warning to Pro-Lifers about Susan G. Komen s race against Life.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and men and women clad in pink will gather to mourn, celebrate victories of healing, and express solidarity in their goal to eradicate breast cancer by participating in Susan G. Komen Foundation-sponsored races to fundraise for this worthy cause. Susan G. Komen, however, compromises its own mission to find a cure for breast cancer by associating with Planned Parenthood, America s largest abortion provider, the pro-life group says. Texas Right to Life urges Susan G. Komen Foundation to stop sponsoring Planned Parenthood immediately and to start benefiting real health clinics for women. Furthermore, Texas Right to Life calls on Pro-Life individuals to boycott the Susan G. Komen Foundation and its Race for the Cure until Komen severs all ties and affiliations with Planned Parenthood.

The concerns over Komen are more than its donations to Planned Parenthood which totaled $730K in 2009 and $569K in 2010.

Many studies have linked an increased risk of developing breast cancer after an abortion, yet both Susan G. Komen and Planned Parenthood deny the risk abortion poses to breast health, TRTL says. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/11/pink-ribbon-scandal-pro-life-groups-speak-out-against-komen/

Study Confirms Abortion Negatively Impacts Women s Health
A recent study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry has concluded what pro-abortion groups have tried to discount for decades: abortion substantially increases a woman s risk of mental health problems. More specifically, post-abortive women experience an 81% increased risk of having subsequent mental health issues. Hundreds of published studies have demonstrated the distinct correlation between induced abortion and the devastating psychological issues it has on women.

Several recent literary reviews on this correlation (including one from the American Psychological Association) have concluded that abortion does not significantly impact a woman s mental health. However, these studies are unreliable for a few notable reasons:

First, there have been just a few studies that comprised of pregnancies that were unintentional but carried to term as a control group. Sometimes pregnancies that are originally intended are aborted, and sometimes unintended pregnancies become wanted as the pregnancy continues, so the wantedness of the pregnancy can alter over time. The intendedness of a pregnancy is determined only by intended or unintended, when many women may actually feel their intendedness of the pregnancy lies somewhere in between. Half of pregnancies in America are labeled unintended. Adolescents and women over forty years of age report that their pregnancies are unintended over 75% of the time. This means most women in control groups of the research studies that compare abortion with full-term pregnancies actually gave birth to unintended babies, even if this is not explicitly evaluated. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/11/study-confirms-abortion-negatively-impacts-womens-health/

And Baby Makes Two: A Pro-Life Profile in Courage
Mom, I m pregnant. With this announcement, my 20-year-old daughter, a junior at a Christian college, rocked my world and changed it forever. My daughter continued, I ve made one mistake and I don t want to make more. I m not going to marry the baby s father at least not now, and I m not going to abort my child.

SEPTEMBER 2006: Earth-shattering news

The phone rang a little before midnight, waking me from a sound sleep. Kristin s voice was calm as she gave me her news. She had spent most of the day contemplating her situation before she called me. She had resolved some questions. She knew that carrying her child to term would mean confessing the situation to the authorities at her Christian college and facing whatever consequences that confession might bring.

Kristin also knew that this life growing inside of her would alter hers forever. She might become a topic for the gossip grapevine and would almost certainly have to give up her starting position on the college s volleyball team. Even so, she had decided that abortion was out of the question. Although I supported my daughter s pro-life position, I needed some emotional support. I told her I needed to share the news with her father and we would call her right back.

My husband was working late in his home office. I broke our daughter s news to him; then we called her back each of us on a different extension. My husband s response was wonderful. He told her that he loved her and was proud of her for choosing life. But after he hung up, we both cried. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/11/and-baby-makes-two-a-pro-life-profile-in-courage/

Is My Priest Pro-Life? The Lack of Homilies on Abortion
A friend of mine was talking to a woman about a new priest relocated to her parish. My friend knew the priest. The woman asked a most curious question about the priest: Is he pro-life?

He certainly is, exclaimed my friend.

Wonderful! she replied. We haven t heard a pro-life homily at this church in five years!

Wow. Imagine that. It s stunning to think that a Catholic would wonder whether her new priest is pro-life. After all, the priest is Catholic. The Roman Catholic Church has been unequivocally pro-life for, oh, about 2,000 years. One would think the Catholic priest would be pro-life.

What would make one think otherwise? That gets to the heart of the issue, and the woman provided an answer in her response: We haven t heard a pro-life homily at this church in five years!

That s very sad, and unfortunately also very common. Indeed, the woman s current priest probably is pro-life, but his parishioners wouldn t know it from his statements. Have you, likewise, not heard a pro-life homily in five years? http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/11/is-my-priest-pro-life-the-lack-of-homilies-on-abortion/

Faithful Citizenship Should Inspire Catholics to Vote Pro-Life
There has been a flurry of commentary on the Introductory Note added to the new version of Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship.

Some have commented that the version just published by the bishops conference is the 2007 version, without revisions, and, as such, has been scored a victory by the Catholics who supported Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election. Naturally, those who abused the 2007 document in telling Catholic voters that Obama was a pro-life candidate no, we are not kidding would be pleased to receive what they consider a green light to do more of the same in 2012.

A closer look at the new Introductory Note, however, suggests to us language that was intended to be more than a mere appendage, to be conveniently overlooked when it comes time to sell Obama and other pro-abortion politicians to Catholic voters in the upcoming election.

Many bishops, and especially the USCCB Executive Committee who signed the new introduction, are aware of the confusion and consternation created during the 2008 campaign caused by the abuse of the document. Dozens of individual bishops issued statements to clarify the document and defend it against the spin being put on it by abortion advocates. The Introductory Note acknowledges this abuse and warns against the privatized version of conscience long held by pro-abortion Catholic politicians. Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, the bishops explain. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/11/faithful-citizenship-should-inspire-catholics-to-vote-pro-life/

Three Babies Survive Abortion When 40 Days for Life Joins CPC
Prayer, persistence and the power of pregnancy centers are the theme of today s message. After speaking at a pregnancy center banquet in Michigan, I was sent this story from Grand Rapids. This amazing story shows what can happen when a 40 Days for Life vigil works with a pregnancy center to save lives that would otherwise become statistics. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/10/cousin-of-queen-elizabeth-ii-says-abortion-a-form-of-eugenics/

Uganda Shows Contraceptives Not the Answer to HIV/AIDS
The fatal danger of relentlessly pushing contraceptives on Uganda and other African countries was laid bare recently in an alarming new report showing that the most popular contraceptive in Eastern and Southern Africa may actually double the risk of contracting HIV. After experiencing success in combating HIV/AIDS in Uganda through an anti-contraception initiative, it s not surprising to hear that contraceptives are part of, and not a solution to, the problem. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/11/uganda-shows-contraceptives-not-the-answer-to-hivaids/
