Lifeissues.net: clear thinking about crucial issues

Dear Friends for Life,
Good News on Euthanasia: The New England Journal of Medicine recently asked its readers to respond to a hypothetical case that was most suited to get a positive answer about physician-assisted suicide. In over 2,000 answers received, over 2/3 of the physicians opposed that course. This fits with the opposition of several medical associations around the world. As the American Medical Association puts it: "Requests for physician-assisted suicide should be a signal to the physician that the patient's needs are unmet and further evaluation to identify the elements contributing to the patient's suffering is necessary."
One of the over 200 comments to the journal comes from a Canadian doctor working in a remote area: "I'm struck that my aboriginal patients never ask about euthanasia. I am realizing that our focus on individual autonomy is a culture-specific one, and occurs at the expense of other values such as connection to other people, valuing of the full human experience, and the ability to receive our life's trajectory without always controlling it."

Female Feticide Connected to Crime Rate: In a report of scholarship entitled "Sex Ratios and Crime: Evidence from China," authors report: "In 2005, 120 boys were born for every 100 girls in China, a surplus of one million boys . . . the social implications of a large number of men with little or no prospect of marriage are largely unknown. In this paper, we look at crime rates, which nearly doubled in the last two decades, and argue that male-biased sex ratios have contributed to this rise . . . we find that a 1 percent increase in the sex ratio raised violent and property crime rates by some 3.7 percent, suggesting that the sex imbalance may account for up to one-sixth of the overall rise in crime."

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

ITEM #1: A prose for World Contraception Day

World Contraception Day. Our world has chosen to celebrate one class of pharmaceutical product that stands above all others. For there is really nothing like World Vitamins Day, or World Analgesic Day or World Antibiotic Day. No, the world has just picked out what it considers as the most important drug to celebrate - Contraception. So it surely must be a real day of jubilation and celebration for many among us.

****************************************

ITEM #2:
Wealthy Chinese seek U.S. surrogates for second child, green card

Wealthy Chinese are hiring American women to serve as surrogates for their children, creating a small but growing business in $120,000 "designer" American babies for China's elite.
****************************************

ITEM #3: Cardinal Burke: Nancy Pelosi 'must' be denied Communion

In a wide-ranging interview, Cardinal Raymond Burke has issued an emphatic call for pro-abortion Catholic politicians like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to be denied Communion.

****************************************

ITEM #4: Amazing Photos of Nathan, Miscarried at 14 Weeks, Show Unborn Baby's Humanity

Allison's son was 13 weeks and 4 days when she lost him. Her husband Daniel and two-and-a-half-year-old son Matthew, along with their family, laid Nathan Isaiah to rest on September 12.
****************************************

ITEM #5: Pill inventor slams ... pill

In an article published by the Vatican this week, the head of the world's Catholic doctors broadened the attack on the pill, claiming it had also brought "devastating ecological effects" by releasing into the environment "tonnes of hormones" that had impaired male fertility, The Taiwan Times says.
****************************************
ITEM #6: 'Person' Death is NOT Real Death
Comment: This is an amazing article from Medscape, a site primarily for health care providers and not pro-life.  His devastating analysis of Singer's arguments is spot on and courageous. Dr. Camosy is an assistent professor of Christian Ethics at Fordham University in New York. -Nancy Valko, R.N.

****************************************

ITEM #7 How Common Is Hidden Euthanasia?
This weekend's remarks by Pope Francis that our "throwaway culture" marginalizes the young and old are worthy of reflection. His mention that this marginalization is evidenced by a "hidden euthanasia" of the elderly poor was not whispered - it was boldly proclaimed. For those involved in serious estate and trust litigation, his reference to covert euthanasia certainly resonates.
****************************************

ITEM #8: Study: Planned Parenthood Health Services at Lowest Point Since 2006 While Tax $ Up 78%

For years, conservatives and pro-life groups have fought public tax dollars going to Planned Parenthood because it is primarily an abortion business and the new study backs up that claim. The meta-study by American Life League shows that the total healthcare services delivered by Planned Parenthood have reached their lowest point since 2006, while taxpayer funding has increased 78 percent over the past six years.
****************************************

ITEM #9: Dutch Euthanasia Deaths Double in 10 Years, Mentally Disabled and Psych Patients Targeted

Euthanasia is targeting people in the Netherlands like never before and the number of people killed via euthanasia has doubled over the last 10 years. A new report indicates Dutch euthanasia deaths jumped 13 percent last year as 4,188 people died.

****************************************

ITEM #10: Time To Shut Down the Porn Industry For Good

The porn industry just ended its self-imposed shut down but one must wonder why. The industry stopped shooting films after four porn stars tested positive for HIV in the last month. However, HIV is only one of many health problems common to the industry. Others include chlamydia, gonorrhea, and herpes. And though these infections often leave permanent damage, they are but a small part of the devastation pornography brings.

ITEM #11: Adding Color and Spice; Befriending Those With Down Syndrome
The works of artists with Down Syndrome tend to be bright, limpid and cheerful. Crisp outlines frame vivid colors. My favorites, including the one given by Tazia Fawly, have a vague resemblance to the coveted art of the Australian aborigines. These Dreamings, as they are called, are darlings of the art market and have taken museums by storm.
****************************************
ITEM #12: Abortion: America's Ultimate Crime Against Women
It's a gruesome story that's been in the news for almost a year now. Outrage was fanned the world over after four Indian men brutally raped and killed a woman during a bus ride in New Delhi. I was angry when I saw the reports, and you probably were, too. Now the four men have been sentenced to death, and while justice was achieved in India, there are countless women here in America for whom it has not yet been accomplished.
