WASHINGTON, Sept. 2 /Christian Newswire/ -- Today the Susan B. Anthony List announced a list of House and Senate targets for the Susan B. Anthony List's Votes Have Consequences project, an effort to educate citizens about the voting records of legislators who are out of step with their districts.
"If there's one thing many members of Congress learned over the August recess, it's the danger of being out of step with your constituents," said Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of the Susan B. Anthony List. "Votes do have consequences, and the current tensions over health care reform should drive that message home. The Votes Have Consequences project will shine the light of the truth on legislators who favor government-backed abortion in health care reform. You can't get further out of sync with the majority of America than by advancing abortion on- demand with taxpayer dollars. We will use every tool in our arsenal to ensure the folks back home know the truth about their legislator's positions."
The Votes Have Consequences project will target the constituencies of the following legislators: Michael Bennett (CO-Senate), Blanche Lincoln (AR-Senate), Harry Reid (NV-Senate), Alan Grayson (FL-08), Debbie Halvorson (IL-11), Frank Kratovil (MD-01), Suzanne Kosmas (FL-24), Walt Minnick (ID-01), Glenn Nye (VA- 02), Tom Perriello (VA-05), Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01), and Harry Teague (NM-02).
"We're going to be assertive, strategic and focused in our efforts to elevate the cause of Life at the grassroots level, where it matters," said former Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave, Project Director for Votes Have Consequences. "It is vital that Americans make their voices heard. Without action, taxpayers will be forced to foot the bill for abortion on- demand in the largest expansion of government- backed abortion since Roe v. Wade. The stakes are high. That is why it's so important for pro-life advocates to go on the offensive."
With a budget of $2 million, Votes Have Consequences will educate voters in targeted districts through television, radio, telephone townhall meetings, local grassroots activity, automated phone calls, online advocacy campaigns and earned media coverage in both traditional and new media outlets. To date, voter education activities through the project include:
- National telephone townhall on August 19, 2009 that engaged over 160,000 Americans on the nexus between abortion coverage and health care reform. Special guests on the call included Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), and former Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO).
- Nevada TV ad highlighting Senator Harry Reid's voting record and health care reform. The initial two week ad buy continues through September 9, 2009, and will be re-aired throughout the fall.
- Automated calls this week from Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser to 243,000 identified pro-life voters in Colorado and Nevada. The call will ask constituents to urge their legislators to vote pro-life on health care reform.
The Susan B. Anthony List is a nationwide network of Americans, over 162,000 residing in all 50 states, dedicated to mobilizing, advancing, and representing pro-life women in politics. Its connected Candidate Fund increases the percentage of pro-life women in the political process.
