Lifeissues.net Newsletter 480

Greetings from LifeIssues.net (
www.LifeIssues.net)

Dear Friends for Life,

Is Vietnam now a two-child family? Officials in Vietnam have proposed a two-child limit for couples similar to China. Vietnam has one of the world's highest abortion rates which will probably increase further if this is adopted. Further the traditional cultural preference for boys could be exacerbated. It now stands at 112-100 male/female ratio.

South Korea may crack down. South Korea has a law which should severely restrict abortions. However, it has been almost completely ignored as 95% of recent abortions have been illegal under the law. Now a group of doctors have publicized their request for a crackdown. The reason for this is a dramatic fall in birth rate, as officials increasingly have been discussing the economic and social cost of their rapidly aging society.

HIV Infection in Nation's (USA) Blood Bank. Responding to a wave of political correctness, which is demanding that blood with HIV infection be allowed in the nation's blood bank, the Washington Times noted that men who have sex with men, "have an HIV prevalence 60 times higher than the general population, 800 times higher than first time blood donors, and 8,000 times higher than repeat blood donors." Common sense argues that this blood should not be allowed in the general pool.

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

(Sign Protest): "10 ABORTION links at Catholic college" - I am writing because Alverno College in Wisconsin - a Catholic institution - lists 10 abortion advocacy groups on its web site under "resources." I already signed a peaceful e-protest sponsored by TFP Student Action and I hope you will consider doing the same. SIGN HERE to erase the abortion links:

ITEM #1. Presumed Consent: Waiting Lists Pressure Organ Donation Before Patients Die

Comment: As I have written before, non-brain death organ donation (aka non-heartbeating organ donation or donation after cardiac death) coupled with presumed consent can be lethal. Most people assume their organs will not be taken unless they are determined to be brain dead. Non-brain death organ donation does not require a determination of brain death but rather a willingness to remove a ventilator and wait for the person to stop breathing and heartbeat within 1 hr. If, as happens about 20% of the time according to studies I have seen, the person does not die within the one hour time limit, the transplant is cancelled and the person is left to die without lifesustaining treatment resumed. -Nancy Valko, RN

ITEM #2. Sydney official promotes 'safest sex' message

Dr Brigid McKenna of the Sydney Archdiocesan Life, Marriage and Family Centre has responded to the rise in venereal disease among young Australians by stressing that the "safest sex" occurs within faithful, lasting relationships.

ITEM #3. Cardinal DiNardo Writes FDA on Abortion Drug Approval

The FDA is considering approving Ulipristal (trade name, Ella) as an "emergency contraceptive". Today, the USCCB's pro-life chair, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, wrote FDA chair Dr. Margaret Hamburg objecting to the proposed designation. The Cardinal is concerned that the drug may in fact be an abortifacient and labeling it "emergency contraceptive" would deceive many women who "would personally never choose to have an abortion."

ITEM #4. Going, going, gone - Sold to the Highest Bidder

A few weeks ago panelists at the American Enterprise Institute urged that changes be made in the current organ donation system. Last week, the President's Council on Bioethics began discussions on this same topic. At the heart of these conversations is the very real and urgent critical shortage of available organs for transplant patients. People are dying while they wait for someone to give them the gift of life. And we need to earnestly look at ways to increase organ donation and organ sharing between those in need and those with healthy organs. But I take huge issue with the solutions the panelists at AEI recommend

ITEM #5. Woman Describes How Porn Addiction Destroyed Marriage

The effect on their marriage was devastating, the woman remembered. "For the past few years he had taken to sleeping in the basement, distancing himself from me, emotionally and physically," she said. She recalled how her husband told her that he no longer felt love for her like he used to, and how he thought of her as the "mother of their children" rather than as a sexual partner.

ITEM #6. Care Net on EllaOne: 'Not Just Another Morning-After Pill'

Care Net, a national network of more than 1,100 pregnancy resource centers, strongly recommends that EllaOne not be granted FDA approval. Its ability to destroy established pregnancies, as well as prevent implantation, makes it an embryocidal drug. FDA approval without making this clear to the public would violate the public trust.

ITEM #7. Argentine Bishop States Gays Can Overcome Same-Sex Attraction, Leads Pro-Family March. Calls homosexual "marriage" a "contradiction in terms"

Homosexuals, he added, "deserve the respect that is owed to the dignity of every human person, but they can never be the origin of a true human family, never can they be constituted in a true marriage, with the same rights and obligations of the matrimonial union between a man and a woman."

ITEM #8. Inquiry launched as Dutch euthanasia cases surge by 13% in ONE year

Comment: We are not surprised. Aside from reasons mentioned, we also know "tired of living" is reason enough to be euthananized, and those with dementia are killed - not to forget infanticide. Sadly, too many in this world are buying into the lie that too many aren't dying fast enough and need that little push. -Cheryl, CHN

ITEM #9. Study: Abortion More Than Triples Breast Cancer Risk Among Sri Lankans

Among women who breastfed between 12-23 months, researchers found a 66.3% risk reduction in comparison to those who had never breastfed and those who had breastfed between 0 and 11 months. The risk reduction climbed to 87.4% for the 24-35 months group and 94% for the 36-47 months group.

ITEM #10. Cohabitation and Children Outside Marriage Linked to Higher Probability of Breakups: Aussie Study

Second marriages are more than 90% more likely to break up than first marriages, according to a new study by Australian researchers. The researchers also found that cohabiting, having children before marrying, and an imbalance between partners in the desire for children are all correlated with marital breakup. "The overwhelming bulk of research on cohabitation and marital instability finds that cohabitation before marriage is linked to a greater probability that the marriage will fail," said the researchers.

ITEM #11. Serious stem cell research doesn't exploit human embryos.

"The scientists" used to say that embryonic stem cell research provided the primary, perhaps "only" hope for treatments of degenerative conditions like Parkinson's and spinal cord injury. This hype, willfully shoveled by Big Biotech and spread by its willing accomplices in the media, opened the spigots of billions of dollars in research during the Bush years-even as "the scientists" complained that the field was withering on the vine. Arguments that adult stem cell research or non embryonic methods deriving plutipotent stem cells should be pursued instead of ESCR and cloning for ethical reasons were denigrated as "anti science," even as celebrities milked the media with inaccurate assertions of coming miracle cures from ESCR-about which they were rarely challenged by fawning legislators and reporters.

ITEM #12. A Pope's Answer to the Problem of Pain

Suffering is part of human existence from birth until death, and every human person suffers in a variety of ways: physically, psychologically, socially, and spiritually. The Bible provides many examples: one's own death, the danger of death, the death of children or friends, sterility, homesickness, persecution, mockery, scorn, loneliness, abandonment, remorse, watching the wicked prosper while the just suffer, the unfaithfulness of spouse and friends, and the misfortunes of one's homeland. Suffering in one form or another accompanies each of us every day. It is an inescapable feature of human existence.
