I just found this video on Pope John Paul II's visit to New York in October 1995. It brought back many memories because I served as a deacon at the Mass he celebrated at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens. What was so special was that I was on the altar, being called the last minute to assist at Mass, a total surprise and gift from the Lord! I held a ciborium filled with hosts during the consecration, there was just no more room on the altar because of the crowds of people, extra hosts were consecrated. At Communion time, I went up to the upper level and distributed Holy Communion to the faithful. My wife and daughter were seated below in front of the altar.
The video only shows a few seconds of this beautiful Mass but here's some trivia: It rained the day before at the Evening Mass and it rained the day after at the Mass in Central Park but our day at Aqueduct was sunny and mild.
I remember when the Holy Father arrived by helicopter. It was so exciting to see him get out and walk towards us. What a day!
