Lifeissues.net Newsletter 484

Greetings from LifeIssues.net (
www.LifeIssues.net)

Dear Friends for Life,

Uzbekistan orders forced sterilizations. In this authoritarian ex-Soviet nation the government has instructed health care workers to surgically sterilize women as part of a campaign to reduce that nation's birth rate. Apparently, many of these are being done in a compulsory fashion and often by hysterectomy. A government decree has ordered each district physician to persuade "at least two women" a month to have the procedure.

The Facts: Unlike Europe, the U.S. birth rate is fractionally under 2.1 babies per women in her lifetime. This is largely due to the continuing immigration of Hispanic women from the south. Failing this, the U.S. would be starting a population decline.

Dutch Euthanasia Deaths Are Up: The number of euthanasia deaths in the Netherlands in 2009 was 2,500. It is well-known that many deaths are not reported, e.g. over 500 deaths in 2005. We note also that in 2007 about 10% of all deaths in the Netherlands were connected to the practice to terminal sedation (euthanasia).

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

ITEM #1. Bishop Congratulates East Timor Government for Resisting Foreign Pressure on Abortion

"The Church," said Bishop of Dili, Dom Alberto Ricardo Da Silva, "has a duty and a call to contribute to the well-being of women and children and their families." For this reason Catholics should work for the health of both mother and the unborn child, despite the "fashionable trend" of promoting abortion as a means of population control, as a number of NGO's - including at least two that are funded by the Canadian bishops' official development arm - have recently done in East Timor. The country only recently staved off an attempt to significantly liberalize its abortion laws.

ITEM #2. Trauma of Children Caring for HIV-Positive Parents

Nine-year-old Nomasonto had no choice but to switch roles with her mother and care for the HIV-positive woman who gave birth to her. Instead of worrying about homework and going out to play with her friends, Nomasonto's daily concerns were now a matter of life and death.

ITEM #3. Caritas leader emphasizes need to assist marginalized AIDS victims

Giving a talk before the kick-off of an international conference in Austria on the AIDS crisis, Caritas Internationalis Secretary General Lesley-Anne Knight stressed that Catholics need to underpin their efforts in the global fight against AIDS by reaching out with "compassion, communion and conscience."

ITEM #4. More than 110,000 divorces take place each year in Spain, institute reports

The Institute for Family Policy issued a report this week showing that Spain has the highest rate of divorce in Europe, with more than 110,000 cases taking place each year. The president of the institute, Eduardo Hertfelder, noted that the "unintended effects of the current fast-track divorce law are becoming evident and clear," making Spain the country "with the highest rate of divorce in the last 10 years out of all the countries that make up the European Union.

ITEM #5. One in 5 Girls Pregnant by the Age of 18

Government figures claim that one in five UK teenage girls have been pregnant at least once before they reach eighteen. Of these girls eighteen per cent had been pregnant twice and three percent had been pregnant three times or more. Thirty six per cent of the girls had abortions. Norman Wells, of the Family Education Trust, said the figures reveal that the previous government's policy of promoting sex education and contraception has been a disaster for young people.

ITEM #6. When should kids date?

As a family psychologist, I am often asked by parents when their children should begin dating. They usually hasten to inform me, "All his (her) friends are dating." My quick answer is: When they're married, and only with their spouse. Seriously, dating age depends upon all kinds of factors, and varies from child to child, even within the same family. But here are some general guidelines from my experience:

ITEM #7. Advice for Fathers

Sometimes negative guidelines are at least as helpful as positive ones, often more so. It's often useful for a father to know what not to do - that is, what to avoid - in a complicated family situation.

ITEM #8. The fact that there are single mothers doesn't make it right

In Ms Leather's brave new world, women are to have children merely because they want them, as is their government-given right, irrespective of their ability to bring them up, or who has to pay for them, or the consequences to the children themselves. Men are to be permanently infantilised, their income being in essence pocket money for them to spend on their enjoyments, having no serious responsibilities at all (beyond paying tax). Henceforth, the state will be father to the child, and the father will be child of the state.

ITEM #9. The Top Ten Myths About Homosexuality

The homosexual movement is built, not on facts or research, but on mythology.

ITEM #10. The Birds and the Bees (via the Fertility Clinic) - How it feels to be a bought-and-paid-for child.

Americans conceived through sperm donation also are more likely to feel alienated from their immediate family than either biological or adopted children. They're twice as likely as adoptees to report envying peers who knew their biological parents, twice as likely to worry that their parents "might have lied to me about important matters" and three times as likely to report feeling "confused about who is a member of my family and who is not."

ITEM #11. Scottish bishop says Catholic Church will never celebrate homosexual marriage.

The Catholic Church will never celebrate same-sex unions - "not now, not in the future, not ever" - even if the law changes to allow religious celebrants to conduct gay marriages, the Bishop of Paisley, Philip Tartaglia, has told the Prime Minister.
