More Senators Oppose Pro-Abortion Supreme Court Nominee Elena Kagan
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- More senators announced their opposition to pro-abortion Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan on Wednesday. The list now includes eight senators who officially oppose Kagan, including Senator John McCain of Arizona who wrote an editorial in USA Today.

McCain says Kagan has frequently "stepped beyond public advocacy in opposition to a policy and into the realm of usurping the prerogative of the Congress and the president to make law and the courts to interpret it."

"I have previously stated that I do not believe judges should stray beyond their constitutional role and act as if they have greater insight than representatives who are elected by the people. Given the choice to uphold a law that was unpopular with her peers and students or interpret the law to achieve her own political objectives, she chose the latter," he added.

Others senators saying they are voting against Kagan include Senator Johnny Isakson of Georgia and pro-life Sens. Bob Bennett of Utah, James Inhofe of Oklahoma and Jim DeMint of South Carolina.

They join senators who have already announced their opposition, including Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Orrin Hatch of Utah.

In his own opinion column, DeMint expressed some of the same themes as McCain.

"Americans don't want their country to be reinvented, expanded and transformed by a living Constitution. They're demanding a return to constitutional, limited government. Yet, Washington still isn't listening to the majority of voters who want less government," he said. Full story at LifeNews.com

Democrat Joins Republicans in Blasting Obama on Pro-Rationing Berwick
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Republicans in the Senate are not the only ones upset by President Barack Obama's recess appointment of pro-rationing activist Donald Berwick to oversee implementation of the new government-run health care program, as pro-abortion Sen. Max Baucus is upset at well.

Obama sidestepped Congress to name Berwick as the head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Berwick had never received a committee hearing or votes from either a Senate panel or on the Senate floor when Obama decided to install the rationing supporter into the influential post.

That is not going over well with Baucus, who issued a statement condemning the move.

"Senate confirmation of presidential appointees is an essential process prescribed by the Constitution that serves as a check on executive power and protects Montanans and all Americans by ensuring that crucial questions are asked of the nominee and answered," he said.

Berwick will lead the CMS until the end of 2011 under the recess appointment, which negates any potential action by the Senate to act on Obama's previous nomination of him for the post.

Some political observers say Obama made the recess appointment after smarting from the withdrawal of pro-abortion legal activist Dawn Johnson, a Justice Department nominee who removed herself from consideration in April after facing massive pro-life opposition to her radical views -- which included saying women are forced to endure slavery when pregnant.

Leading pro-life groups have strongly objected to the recess appointment and point to Berwick's rationing views -- calling him a "one man death panel." Full story at LifeNews.com

ACLU Claims Catholic Hospitals Refusing Life-Saving Abortions for Women
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The ACLU is making a claim that Catholic hospitals nationwide refusing are abortions for women in very rare instances in which it may somehow be necessary to save their life. But ACLU is coming under fire on its own accord for misrepresenting the situation and trying to force hospitals to do abortions.

The ACLU has sent a has sent a letter to the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services demanding an investigation into what it calls "potential violations" of law regarding the supposedly life-saving abortions.

"The lives and health of pregnant women seeking medical care should be of paramount importance," expressed Brigitte Amiri, senior staff attorney with the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project, in a statement last week. "No woman should have to worry that she will not receive the care she needs based on the affiliation of the nearest hospital."

The letter asks federal officials to interpret the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) and the Conditions of Participation of Medicare and Medicaid -- which require hospitals to provide appropriate medical care to all patients.

The ACLU says the portion of the ACT concerning emergency reproductive health care includes abortions. Full story at LifeNews.com

Retired Army Officer: Obama, Democrats Shouldn't OK Abortions on Military Bases
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A retired army lieutenant colonel has penned a new opinion column saying he doesn't think President Barack Obama and his pro-abortion allies in Congress should move forward with plans to allow abortions at military base hospitals. Robert Maginnis says Obama has promised not to fund abortions and should make good on it.

"The Democratic congressional majority will soon decide whether taxpayers should subsidize abortions at military hospitals. Their decision will test President Obama s trustworthiness and the voters patience," Maginnis says.

The fight concerns the amendment Sen. Roland Burris attached to a defense spending bill to allow abortions at taxpayer-funded military base hospitals. The Senate Armed Services Committee approved the amendment on a 15-12 vote.

All Democrats supported it except for Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska, who joined all of the committee's Republicans in opposition.

The Senate is expected to defeat a pro-life effort to remove the Burris pro-abortion language from the measure, and the Senate bill and the House version, which does not allow abortions at the base hospitals, will go to a conference committee. Should the final measure endorse abortion, Maginnis is worried.

"It s not clear that Obama, the nation s most pro-abortion president ever, would honor his commitment against funding abortion by vetoing the bill," he said in his opinion column posted at Human Events. Full story at LifeNews.com

United Nations Creates What May Become Billion-Dollar Pro-Abortion Agency
New York, NY (LifeNews.com/CFAM) -- Last Friday the General Assembly voted to consolidate four separate United Nations (UN) bodies dedicated to women s issues into one new gender equality entity called UN Women.

The resolution capped a victory for radical feminists who lobbied for years for the new entity and is the latest in an overall push to bring women s issues even more onto the UN agenda.

After four years of sometimes harsh negotiations, member states agreed on simplifying the disjointed efforts of four UN offices dedicated to women s issues; the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW), Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW) and the Office of the Special Advisor on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI).

The framework for UN Women is the Beijing Platform for Action, which calls for an end to discrimination against women especially highlighting education, employment, political participation and human rights.

An Under-Secretary-General appointed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will head the new body and member states are calling for a prompt appointment before the General Assembly meets in September. Many are speculating that former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet will be chosen. Bachelet is a socialist who promoted reproductive health and women s rights during her political career. The Under-Secretary-General will hold a 4-year term with a possibility of one renewable term. Full story at LifeNews.com

Poll: Pro-Abortion Barbara Boxer Has Narrow Lead Over Pro-Life Carly Fiorina
Sacramento, CA (LifeNews.com) -- A new poll of the California Senate race finds the lead pro-abortion Sen. Barbara Boxer has over pro-life candidate Carly Fiorina is very narrow. Boxer's favorability numbers have also taken a hit, according to the survey released today by the Field Poll.

Boxer now leads Fiorina by a scant three percentage points,47-44, which is within the margin of error.

The lead is actually an increase over the one percent lead Boxer had in the Field Poll the firm conducted in March. But, her favorability numbers are dropping.

Now, just 42 percent of California voters approve of the job Boxer is doing in the Senate while 48 percent disapprove. Another 52 percent of voters have an unfavorable view of Boxer overall.

Fiorina is becoming better known around the state and the Field Poll shows 37 percent of voters don't know enough about her now to say if they have a favorable or unfavorable view. That is down from 59 percent in March and it gives Fiorina a chance to define herself to voters before Boxer can.

Currently, 34 percent of California residents view Fiorina favorably while 29 percent have a negative opinion. Full story at LifeNews.com

Florida Senate Poll Finds Pro-Life Marco Rubio Now Leading Charlie Crist
Tallahassee, FL (LifeNews.com) -- A new poll in the Florida Senate race finds pro-life candidate Marco Rubio now leading his two pro-abortion opponents, Governor Charlie Crist and either Democrat Kenrick Meek or Jeff Greene. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters gives Rubio a lead after he had been trailing.

The poll of in Florida finds the two candidates neck-and-neck again this month, with Rubio earning 36% support and Crist, the state s current Republican governor, capturing 34% of the vote against Meek, who has 15 percent.

In a matchup with Greene included in the survey, Rubio has a bigger lead at 37 percent compared with 33 percent for Crist, who is running as an independent, and Greene receives 18 percent.

A month ago, Rubio, former speaker of the Florida House, and Crist were tied at 37% apiece in the Meek matchup.

"Crist, who opted in early May to run as an independent when Rubio began to run away with the Republican Primary race, bounced to a modest lead - and his highest level of support at 38% - following that announcement," said pollster Scott Rasmussen. "Rubio s support in the same period has ranged from 34% to 39%. Meek hit a high of 22% in the three-way race in April but has lost ground since then." Full story at LifeNews.com

Indiana Senate Candidate Dan Coats Gets Pro-Life Backing Over Ellsworth
Indianapolis, IN (LifeNews.com) -- Indiana Senate candidate Dan Coats, a pro-life advocate who compiled a strong record when he served in Congress previously, has earned the endorsement of a pro-life women's group. Coats now enjoys the backing of the Susan B. Anthony List over his Democratic opponent Brad Ellsworth.

The endorsement is important because Ellsworth, who calls himself pro-life, let down pro-life groups when he supported the government-run health care bill that includes massive abortion funding with taxpayer dollars.

Leading up to that vote, Ellsworth also upset pro-life groups when he proposed a so-called compromise on abortion funding that essentially did not ban taxpayer-funded abortions in the national health care plan.

Today, the Susan B. Anthony List Candidate Fund said it is supporting Coats and its president, Marjorie Dannenfelser, talked about the endorsement.

"Once again, the Senate is in great need of the pro-life statesmanship -- which Dan Coats has already proven time and again to possess. His commitment to rescind taxpayer funding of abortion in health care and in every aspect of federal spending is urgently needed in the coming Congress," she said. Full story at LifeNews.com

Michigan Pro-Abortion Groups Back Virg Bernero, Pro-Life Group Supports Cox
Lansing, MI (LifeNews.com) -- Two pro-abortion groups in Michigan announced today they are endorsing Virg Bernero in the Democratic primary for governor. Meanwhile, Right to Life of Michigan has been supporting Republican hopeful Mike Cox, who is also facing a crowded primary election.

Bernero has received the support of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan and the Michigan National Organization for Women.

He faces House Speaker Andy Dillon for the Democratic nomination and Dillon is campaigning as a pro-life candidate for the upcoming August 3 primary election, though Right to Life of Michigan officials say that's not the case.
In a press release the pro-abortion groups said Berner would work as governor to "protect a woman's right to choose."

Meanwhile, Right to Life of Michigan has been supporting current state Attorney general Mike Cox in his bid for the GOP nomination to take on Bernero or Dillon. Cox faces a crowded primary field including pro-life Congressman Peter Hoekstra

RLM endorsed Mike Cox twice in his winning state-wide campaigns for attorney general.

"As Attorney General, he defended Michigan's ban on partial birth abortion to the U.S. Supreme Court despite the governor's opposition. He has defied Governor Granholm by immediately filing a lawsuit challenging the national health care law which includes federal funding of abortion," RLM president Barb Listing said. Pro-Life Groups Right About Health Care Law Contraception Coverage Issues
by Michael New

Tuesday s Washington Post included an article that shows how health-care reform may result in a contraceptive-coverage mandate on health insurers.

This article is interesting to pro-lifers for a couple of reasons. First, as is typical of the Post and most other mainstream media outlets, contraception supporters receive far more coverage than their opponents: The Post quotes or cites six people who support contraceptive coverage, while only quoting one person Deirdre McQuade from the USCCB who opposes the policy.

More importantly, this article nicely shows why the pro-life movement has good reasons to oppose health-care-reform legislation: The contraceptives that might be covered could include abortifacients. These abortifacients would be subsidized by federal tax dollars. Additionally, a contraceptive mandate could effectively invalidate several state laws requiring that minors have parental permission before purchasing contraceptives. Full story at LifeNews.com

Brazil Soccer Player Bruno May Have Killed Pregnant Girlfriend, Refused Abortion
by Michael New

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (LifeNews.com) -- Brazilian residents have been focused on soccer for the last month with the World Cup in progress but with Brazil having been eliminated, they are now turning their attention to the campaign of its most popular national team who stands accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend.

Soccer player Bruno Fernandes das Dores de Souza the captain and goal-keeper of the Rio de Janeiro team Flamengo, which has tens of millions of fans.

Married with children, Bruno reportedly had an affair with 25-year-old student Eliza Samudio and is believed to have gotten her pregnant. She attempted to prove Bruno's paternity of her unborn son, who she called Bruninho (Little Bruno).

Bruno, who was not on the Brazilian World Cup squad, reportedly coaxed Samudio into his car and three of his friends forced her to take the ulcer drug Cytotec that is misused to cause a miscarriage.

"If I kill you and throw you somewhere, you're not going to be found," she says Bruno told her, according to an interview with Rio tabloid Extra in October 2009 while four months pregnant. She claims Bruno then persuaded her to meet him the next day at an illegal abortion business, but she went to the police instead. Full story at LifeNews.com

Birmingham, Alabama, Loses Court Case on Pro-Life Group Protesting Abortions
Birmingham, AL (LifeNews.com) -- Officials in this Alabama city are backing down after facing a lawsuit from a pro-life legal group, Life Legal Defense Fund. LLDF says several Birmingham police officers engaged in "outrageous civil rights violations" against nine pro-life advocates who were arrested last year.

LLDF told LifeNews.com in June that the pro-life young people were unlawfully arrested in February 2009 and they spent more than 14 hours in jail for holding signs and handing out literature on a public sidewalk in front of a local high school.

The pro-life advocates are members of the pro-life activist youth group Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust and they were handing out literature to students as they left the building at the end of the school day.

They want to come back to Birmingham and do the same thing and the lawsuit was filed to ensure their First Amendment rights are protected.

Now, a federal district court in Alabama approved a consent order today ensuring that police in Birmingham will not interfere with the expressive activities of the pro-life youth group. Full story at LifeNews.com
