Senate Opposes Bill Making Military Hospitals Abortion Centers
The Senate turned back a second attempt by pro-abortion Democrats to stop a Republican filibuster against a Defense Department funding measure that would also allow abortions at military base hospitals.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid couldn t find enough votes for cloture to stop debate and cast a vote on the legislation, but brought the measure up for a vote anyway.
His first attempt in September to get 60 votes for cloture failed as Republicans filibustered the measure in part because of the Burris amendment that would overturn a longstanding ban on abortions at taxpayer-funded military hospitals both domestically and abroad.
Today s second effort failed on a 57-40 vote with all Democrats voting for cloture to move ahead with the bill and the abortions, except for Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who compiled a pro-life voting record as the state s governor. Republicans again voted no, with pro-abortion Republicans staying with the remainder of their party except Sen. Susan Collins of Maine. Full story at LifeNews.com
Abortion Backers Put Women at Risk, Promote RU 486 Drug Without Ultrasound
A new study published by abortion advocates could put women s health at risk by suggesting they do not receive an ultrasound prior to using the dangerous RU 486 abortion drug.
The mifepristone drug has already been documented to have claimed the lives of at least 13 women around the world and the European manufacturer suggests more may have died as well.
Another 1,100 women in the United States have, as of 2006 FDA figures, been injured by the abortion pill facing everything from hospitalizations to blood transfusions to emergency surgery.
Now, Hillary Bracken of Gynuity Health Projects in New York City has published a new study suggesting an ultrasound for women before an abortion using the drug may be unneeded.
There are no official guidelines for when an ultrasound is indicated, but ultrasounds are typically performed to ensure there s not an ectopic pregnancy and to determine fetal age so the abortion drug is used within the window when it is considered most safe at around seven to nine weeks of pregnancy. Planned Parenthood Uses Choice on Earth Theme for Fundraising Email
The national Planned Parenthood abortion business is at it again, using a sacrilegious Christmas theme to raise money for its efforts to promote and perform abortions.
Although the organization is not selling its much-maligned Christmas cards bearing the same theme, Planned Parenthood Federation of America president Cecile Richards sent out a fundraising email yesterday to her supporters with a headline image bearing the words, Choice on Earth.
The fundraising piece never mentioned the Christmas-related phrase but focused on stopping legislation sponsored in Congress by pro-life Rep. Mike Pence that would cut off taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood by preventing abortion businesses from receiving family planning funds.
Emboldened by the fight over health care reform, extreme anti-choice groups have gotten a lot louder and, unfortunately, more powerful. And after the November elections, they have a new gang of allies ready to push their dangerous agenda, Richards lamented. Rep. Mike Pence has promised his anti-choice base that he will defund Planned Parenthood next year, and that s just the beginning of the attacks on Planned Parenthood and the women Planned Parenthood serves. Planned Parenthood Opens Abortion Biz in Omaha, Nebraska
Planned Parenthood of the Heartland has opened a new abortion business in Omaha, Nebraska on the northwest side of town that is the second in the large Midwestern city.
The opening follows the national news associated with LeRoy Carhart, who does late abortions, heading to Maryland to do abortions outside the nation s capital after a new law banning abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy forced him to relocate.
Jill June, president and CEO of the organization, announced the opening of the new abortion business at 3105 N. 93rd St. and she played down the abortions in an interview with the Omaha World Herald newspaper.
She tried to focus local residents on non-abortion services the abortion business offers, even though 95 percent of the services Planned Parenthood offers to pregnant women consists of abortions and it does more than 25 percent of all abortions nationwide. Full story at LifeNews.com
Straus Being 50 Percent Pro-Life Not Good Enough for Texas
As Thanksgiving has passed and Christmas celebration plans are now underway, the historic recent elections are fading from the attention of most. The in-depth temporal analysis of political shows is quickly yielding to jingle bells and nights of silent reflection upon the eternal significance of this time of year.
Despite the need to focus on the weightier matters and also enjoy the mirth of the season, we cannot ignore one alarming development: Texas Republican moderates have misinterpreted the election results (as they almost always do) and are threatening to undermine the electoral revolution of November. UN and Planned Parenthood Sponsor Campaign to OK Willful HIV Infection
A new campaign seeks to eliminate disclosure laws which require HIV positive individuals to inform their sex partners of their potentially deadly infection.
The campaign is led by the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and UNAIDS, an umbrella group of UN agencies. Notably absent from this campaign is any recognition of the danger posed for the possible victims of a willful refusal to disclose HIV status.
As part of the campaign, IPPF released a collection of interviews entitled Behind Bars , which implies that such criminal laws fuel stigma against HIV persons. Proponents of criminal laws assert they are designed to help protect and prevent sexual partners from contracting a potentially deadly virus. Full story at LifeNews.com
Iowa Bill Would Ban Abortions After 20 Weeks Over Fetal Pain
Iowa legislators are putting their plans to stop LeRoy Carhart from doing late abortions by putting into action their effort to pass a law similar to the one in Nebraska that forced him to leave the state.
State Rep. Matt Windschitl of Missouri Valley says he is in the process of drafting legislation that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy based on the scientific evidence showing unborn children feel pain.
That s the innovative law Nebraska passed that abortion advocates have yet to challenge in court that drove Carhart to pursue doing abortions in Iowa, Maryland, and Indiana. Full story at LifeNews.com
Canadian Pro-Lifers: Prime Minister Should OK Free Vote on Abortion Bill
In advance of a debate in parliament over a bill that would stop coerced and forced abortions on women, a pro-life group says Prime Minister Stephen Harper should reconsider his position.
Harper has said he will never reopen the abortion debate nor will he support this bill, but Peter Ryan, Executive Director of New Brunswick Right to Life, hopes he will change his mind as he did before.
Right now the Prime Minister is saying his government all the cabinet members, around 40 MPs I think will oppose Roxanne s Law even though many of them are pro-life, even though the prime minister should know better, he said. Why does he oppose it? Because he s said he does not want the abortion issue to come up in Parliament. Full story at LifeNews.com
Scientists Still Pushing for Human Cloning Amid Media Blackout
While the subject of cloning has not been in the news lately, people should realize that there are some scientists who still want human clones, and politicians pushing for approval of human cloning for experiments.
Back in October, UNESCO s International Bioethics Committee published a report suggesting a fresh look at the 2005 UN Declaration against all human cloning, as well as encouraging a change in cloning terminology to sanitize the production of cloned human embryos to make it more acceptable. The committee proposed different options for legal regulation of human reproductive cloning (including the possibility of a moratorium) , essentially opening the possibility of future born human clones. Carhart Should Prompt States to Ban Late-Term Abortions
With all the news this week with LeRoy Carhart s first days as a late-term abortionist in Maryland, I just wanted to reflect on importance of each life, born and preborn.
On Monday, I joined over 500 people in Germantown, Maryland to protest LeRoy Carhart s first day at his new abortion facility.
After the press conference, I was sent an email from one of our supporters which included Carhart s 1997 testimony about his late-term abortion procedures. In the testimony, Carhart callously describes, detail by detail, of how he tears unwanted babies apart limb by limb while they are still alive in the womb. In the bone-chilling testimony, Carhart even admits that often the babies are still alive during the abortion because then he can see and hear the heartbeat through the ultrasound during the procedure.
