Dannenfelser: "This consensus support, paired with November's electoral gains have given Congress clear marching orders: the time to end taxpayer funding of abortion is now."
WASHINGTON,
Dec. 1, 2010 /Christian Newswire/ -- Today, the Susan B. Anthony List's "Stop Abortion Funding" online petition, launched shortly after the November election, closed in on the 35,000-signature mark. The campaign, aimed at ending all federal funding of abortion in the 112th Congress, includes efforts to mobilize its ever-growing grassroots network and an online petition (
www.StopAbortionFunding.com) encouraging Congress to pass legislation prohibiting taxpayer funding of abortion.
"Now is the time to translate pro-life electoral gains into serious pro-life legislative victories," said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. "The enthusiastic grassroots response to this campaign echoes the support Americans showed for pro-life leaders at the ballot box on November 2nd and have consistently shown in poll after poll for commonsense laws that save lives and defund abortion providers. This consensus support, paired with November's electoral gains have given Congress clear marching orders: the time to end taxpayer funding of abortion is now."
The "Stop Abortion Funding" campaign urges Members of Congress to pass two priority pieces of pro-life legislation: the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, sponsored by Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Dan Lipinski (D-IL), which will create a government-wide statutory prohibition on taxpayer funding of abortion, repealing abortion funding in Obamacare, and the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, sponsored by Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), which will ensure that tax dollars are not sent to abortion providers under Title X family planning funds.
"Americans strongly oppose having their tax dollars pay for abortion and want lawmakers to make a priority of passing legislation that prohibits it," Dannenfelser said. "They want pro-life leadership that produces life-saving results and the timing has never been better for that to happen."
The Susan B. Anthony List spent $11 million during the 2010 midterm election cycle. Overall, the SBA List was involved in 90 races including 62 wins and 28 losses. Successes included: defeating 15 of 20 so-called "pro-life" Democrats who voted for abortion funding in the health care reform bill; increasing the number of pro-life women in the House by 70 percent; filling the void of pro-life women in the U.S. Senate and increasing the number of pro-life women governors from one to four.
