Dear deaconjohn,
Well, the Synod on the Family has concluded and the dust is
beginning to settle. We still have much work to do, as Dr. Joseph Meaney
points out in his Crisis Magazine article linked below, though there
were some improvements in the final document.
Both Dr. Joseph
and I highlight a troubling element of the final statement, however, and
one that will strike the HLI family as very strange. There is a very
poorly constructed statement on the rights and duties of parents to
provide sex education for their children. In my article you will find
several helpful quotes from Church teaching on the topic as you defend
this essential right of parents.

Last Friday the Ordinary Synod on the Family concluded and released
its document, or Relazione Finale. The document, currently available
only in Italian, is causing some concerns. Sadly, we will have to wait
until the document is translated into English to better understand its
content. With such an important document, I question the decision to
not publish it in the other major languages, especially in its release
to the general public. This decision must have caused some difficulty
for Synod Fathers who are not fluent in Italian, which may have
affected their voting. - continue -

In several other points, however, the final report of the synod made vast improvements over the relatio synodi,
the working document, from last year. Abortion went from zero mentions
to five. Condemnations of the "contraceptive mentality" and the fear
of overpopulation were included in the final report. The synod fathers
insisted on a firm statement of indignation at the financial blackmail
used by international organizations to pressure countries into
legalizing "homosexual marriage." There was also a very strong
denunciation of the gender ideology that denies the fundamental
differences between men and women and their essential complementarity.
The final report laments a "sharp drop in the birthrate" and calls for
"unconditional openness to life" among married couples before citing Humanae Vitae and Evangelium Vitae. - continue -
