“An oasis of life in a desert of death”

Group hopes to build pro-life women's center in downtown LA area jammed with abortion clinics

In a predominantly Latino area of Los Angeles where no fewer than 10 abortion clinics are situated, promoters of an event scheduled for Sunday, May 23, say they hope to raise funds to help construct Centro Médico Guadalupe (Guadalupe Medical Center), "an oasis of life in the middle of a desert of death."

The Spanish-language, daylong "mega-conference" will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the South Hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center. It is being sponsored by Manto de Guadalupe (Mantle of Guadalupe), a non-profit organization founded by Mexican actor Eduardo Verástegui.

The event, dubbed "Unidos Por La Vida" (United for Life), is scheduled to include performances by singers and actors such as Emmanuel Acha and his son Alejandro. Other speakers include actress Karyme Lozano, Manuel Capetillo, Gilberto Gless, Fr. Juan Rivas and Fr. Mariano de Blas. Also scheduled to speak at "Unidos Por La Vida" is former Planned Parenthood director turned pro-lifer Abby Johnson.

"The funds collected at this event will finance the opening of a medical center for women in downtown Los Angeles that will offer free medical attention of high quality to Latin women of limited resources who are pregnant, Verástegui said.
