Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.LifeIssues.net)
Dear Friends for Life,
"UN Reports High Levels of HIV/AIDS In New Guinea" - The latest report from the United National Development Program Pacific said New Guinea reported 28,294 cases of HIV/AIDS in the Pacific region. The data, collected at the end of 2008 by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, reported a total of 29,631 cases regionwide. Most internal migration is to the larger urban centers and to some mining towns that are "hot spots" for HIV transmission.
"Taiwan Lowest Birth Rate" - Taiwan with a population of about 23 million has one of the lowest birth rates in the world, being approximately 1.1 children per woman in her lifetime. In an attempt to raise this, the government is proposing to pay the equivalent of 160 U.S.D. a month for every child under the age of 3.
"Italy is Dying" - A new report shows that 53% of Italian families have no children, while an additional 22% have only one child. Overall the fertility rate in Italy is 1.3 children born per women in her lifetime. This is progressively resulting in a largely childless and aging nation.
The Culture of Life needs you. Let your presence be heard both to God (by prayers) and to the world (by action).
God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI
(Quote) "My own special Father and Patron, St. Philip Neri, lived in an age as traitorous to the interests of Catholicism as any that preceded it, or can follow it. He perceived that the mischief was to be met, not with argument, not with science, not with protests and warnings, not by the recluse or the preacher, but by means of the great counter-fascination of purity and truth." - Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman

(FOCUS ON ASIA): "China's parents have begun to rebel" - Professor Yang Zhizhu is a brave man. In flagrant defiance of China's womb-policing one-child policy, he and his wife have chosen to become outlaws by having two children and flat out refusing to pay the second-child fine (around 18,000 pounds). 'Why should I pay money for having my own kid?' asked Professor Yang in an interview last month. 'It's our right as citizens.' For the crime of starting a two-child family, Professor Yang was fired from his job at the Beijing Youth Politics College and now faces an uncertain future. http://newstaging.spectator.widearea.co.uk/print/the-magazine/features/6012603/chinas-parents-have-begun-to-rebel.thtml

ITEM #1. Need For Those With HIV To Stop Smoking
A U.S. researcher says there is a need for cessation programs to help smokers who have human immunodeficiency virus.

ITEM #2. Forgotten Fathers and Their Unforgettable Children
Usually, when a family member dies the rest of the family engages in public and familial grief process, which if successful, "closes the wound." But proper closure following the loss of a miscarried or aborted child is much more difficult because our culture resists, and is even hostile to, acknowledging the reality that abortion involves the loss of a child--a member of a family.

ITEM #3. Impact of Abortion on Men
When people think about the role of men in abortion, it seems that they usually think about the stereotype of the man who forces the abortion or the male who abandons. However, there are many roles the man may have played in the experience. One man may have been involved in several abortions, each with a different scenario. The impact on fathers is mitigated by the role they play in the abortion. They fall into separate categories.

ITEM #4. Post-Abortion Trauma in Men Still Overlooked
This is unfortunate for both the men involved and for society as a whole as abortion has damaged the very fabric of our society. As children, mothers, and fathers are devalued, so too is the family, the foundational structure of a civilized society. It does not seem too far-reaching to suggest that abortion has sickened all of our culture. The symptoms seem obvious as men and women struggle with unresolved grief, families break down, and even living children wonder at the precariousness of their existence.

ITEM #5. That day ripped my gut out - A man's story
For every woman who has had an abortion a man has been involved. For me it was two abortions.
I think that because we live in such a visual world where we can't see the baby from conception, it just doesn't seem real. I know this may seem like a simple analogy, but ... we cannot see corn that was just planted; yet, that doesn't make it any less a vegetable.

ITEM #6. Society Turns a Blind Eye as Millions of Young Girls Forced into Sex Trade
Crusading Canadian journalist and author, Victor Malarek claims many young non-English speaking women who arrive in Australia from Asian countries such as Thailand or the Philippines are victims of ruthless traffickers who force them into prostitution.
"These young girls who are usually still in their teens or very early 20s, do not have the money or wherewithal to make the trip to Australia. Most don't even know where Australia is. Instead their travel is facilitated by traffickers who make a lot of money off them by forcing them into prostitution," he says.

ITEM #7. Not Like Everyone Else: Same-Sex Couples and Marriage
We've warned before that same-sex "marriage" will weaken the foundations of traditional marriage. New research shows us why.

ITEM #8. Warning to Britain as almost half of Belgium's euthanasia nurses admit to killing without consent
End of life: Euthanasia is legal in Belgium but must only be carried out by a doctor and with the patient's permission. A high proportion of deaths classed as euthanasia in Belgium involved patients who did not ask for their lives to be ended, a study found. More than 100 nurses admitted to researchers that they had taken part in 'terminations without request or consent'.

ITEM #9. The Culture of Life Gains Momentum in Canada
Addressing subjects like abortion, euthanasia, the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman, family issues and the civilization of love - just to name a few - the archbishop of Quebec City called upon Catholics, along with men and women of good faith, to intensify their mobilization and actions for the culture of life, which is also the culture of respect for the unborn, the elderly and women.

ITEM #11. 72 Per Cent Of Aids/HIV Sufferers In Malaysia Are Muslims
Malaysian AIDS Council vice-president Datuk Zaman Khan said that in 2000 the main cause of women being infected with HIV/AIDS was drug addiction, but lately, it had been attributed to heterosexual sex (30 per cent). ... Also of concern was the spread of the disease among women, from 9.5 per cent in 2000 to 20 per cent last year.

ITEM #12. President of Final Exit Nerwork writes oped supporting assisted suicide
Comment: It's hard to believe in Final Exit's "compassion" when you read its president's contemptuous descriptions of some diseases. I took care of my mother with Alzheimer's and she died comfortably and with dignity. It was more important that I recognized her rather than require that she recognize me. I resent Dincin's statement that "Friends and family who are forced to witness their fall into oblivion suffer indescribably".
Dincin then goes on to describe the prognosis for people with pancreatic cancer: "All those patients will know is a future of intense agony followed by death. Some "life." In 2001, I cared for an aunt with pancreatic cancer and she also died peacefully. And, I would like to add, without the indignity of being assisted in suicide by family or Final Exit members.
Finally, Dincin characterizes people like me as "those who have the heart to consign these people to a living hell" and
What I do find "morally reprehensible" is organizations like Final Exit that provide suicide information even to physically healthy people like my daughter who died by suicide using one technique that the medical examiner called "textbook Final Exit."
In case you missed it, please read Final Exit's manifesto at http://www.finalexit.org/liberty_and_death_manifesto_right_to_die.html. --Nancy Valko, RN
