American Catholic Bishops and the New Normal
By Judie Brown
As Catholics around the world rejoice at the election of a new pope, Americans worry about the leadership in our country by our bishops. We read canon law and wonder why it isn't always being upheld. We question those in politics who claim to be Catholic, yet who trounce on the faith. Today's commentary addresses these things and encourages us to pray for the bishops as we enter this new era with Pope Francis.

Charged with murder for killing babies 30 seconds too late: The absurdity of the Gosnell trial
LifeSiteNews
[W]hile reports about the nauseating conditions inside Gosnell's abortion clinic aren't doing much to inspire consumer confidence in the abortion industry, by far the worst thing for abortion supporters is the way the trial is laying bare for all to see the grotesque subversion of logic that lies at the heart of legalized abortion. Gosnell, after all, faces the death penalty for allegedly killing newborn babies that, in many states, it would have been perfectly legal for him to kill a few minutes earlier. In fact, if he had killed the babies a few minutes earlier, the law in many states would have defended Gosnell's actions as constitutionally protected "healthcare." The abortionist's crime isn't therefore the fact that he killed these babies, but that he was too unskilled to kill them in the "right" way. Kill the baby one instant, and it is "reproductive healthcare." Kill the baby the next instant, and it is capital murder. This is the outrageous contradiction created by legalized abortion.

Feds pay millions due to deadly HPV shot
World Net Daily
After declaring a popular vaccine to prevent a sexually transmitted disease safe for girls and boys as young as 11, the federal government has now paid almost $6 million to victims of the shot----including at least two who died after receiving it. And the government hasn't even settled half of the 200 claims against it. The public interest law firm Judicial Watch filed a Freedom of Information Act request to obtain documents with that information from the Department of Health and Human Services, or HHS. The documents show that HHS's National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, or VICP, has awarded $5,877,710 to 49 victims in claims made against the HPV vaccines. That includes payments for two claims of death caused by the vaccine.

Scientists discuss relationship between abortion and violence against women
MELISA Institute
Scientists of the United States of America, Ireland, and Chile met [earlier this month] in New York to discuss recent scientific evidence regarding abortion as a form of growing violence against women and girls. [The] indiscriminate practice of abortion is significantly correlated with coercion, a history of sexual abuse, violence during pregnancy, intimate partner violence, and with psychological consequences that may lead to suicide. The meeting "Public Policies to reduce maternal mortality, a holistic focus on maternal health" took place in parallel to the 57th Session of the Commission of Women Status of the United Nations, whose priority theme is the "elimination and prevention of all types of violence against women and girls."
