OCare Back in Court; BDF at the Ivy Leagues and in the Wash Times

Inside this issue
 Obamacare Back in Court!
The U.S. Supreme Court has revived a comprehensive challenge to Obamacare's individual and employer mandates in light of actions the Obama administration has taken since the Court's designation of the individual mandate penalty as a "tax."  The case is Liberty University v. Geithner, which will be argued before the U.S. Fourth Circuit by our friends at Liberty Council on May 16.

On March 7, Bioethics Defense Fund filed a key amicus brief on behalf of 281 Members of Legatus and the Catholic Medical Association, laying out exactly how the "Abortion Premium Mandate" and the "HHS Abortifacient Drug Mandate" invalidate the Individual Mandate as an unconstitutional "tax on pro-life conscience."  Ivy League; Surrogacy Case

BDF President Nikolas Nikas is teaching young leaders to use a natural law approach to analyze life issues, with recent speaking events at Ivy League Dartmouth College and Boston's Northeastern Law Center.

On the litigation front is a notable case in which lead counsel consulted with Nikas.  It illustrates why the practice of "wombs for rent" objectifies both the surrogate and the baby, who in this case was abandoned as damaged goods by the biological parents who ordered the surrogate mother to abort the less than physically perfect baby. From CNN's "Surrogate Offered $10,000 to Abort Baby:"
"I told them that they had chosen me to carry and protect this child, and that was exactly what I was going to do," Kelley said. "I told them it wasn't their decision to play God."

WashTimes: The High Cost of Free Contraceptives

The Washington Times last week ran an opinion piece co-authored by BDF's Dorinda Bordlee about how the HHS Mandate not only violates religious liberty with mandates of life-ending drug coverage, but also endangers the health of women. From "The High Cost of Free Contraceptives:"
Take this quiz: What well-known family of drugs (a) is classified by the World Health Organization as "Group 1: Carcinogenic to Humans" and (b) provides "tremendous health benefits for women." If you answered "combined oral contraceptives," you are well-qualified to work for Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.
