Lifeissues.net: clear thinking about crucial issues

Dear Friends For Life,

The debate over assisted suicide and euthanasia is a passionate one. But as the discussions continue to rage around the world, there are a few places where assisted death is already legal. Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Oregon and Washington States in the US all have laws permitting assisted suicide or euthanasia in some form. Listen to the following two 25-minute presentations:

Episode 1: When Assisted Death Is Legal - In part one, Carr travels to Switzerland, where she visits the rooms where volunteers help people die, and finds out why the Swiss law on assisted suicide goes back to the 19th Century. In Belgium she meets a doctor who admits to performing euthanasia before it was legal; and in Luxembourg, she finds out why the law on assisted suicide nearly caused a constitutional crisis. Carr questions whether it is possible to balance the right of the individual who wants to die with the responsibility of society to protect those who don't.

Episode 2: When Assisted Death Is Legal - In part two, Carr visits the Netherlands, where she meets the group behind the 'mobile euthanasia units' which hit the headlines last year, and asks whether a law on voluntary life-ending procedures might open the door to involuntary ones. She also visits Oregon and Washington State in the US, where she finds out who is most likely to use the Death with Dignity law, and hears about the cancer patient whose health-care plan refused to pay for chemotherapy - but offered assisted suicide instead.

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

ITEM #1: Surrogate offered $10,000 to abort baby

Crystal Kelley was offered $10,000 to have an abortion after ultrasounds showed the baby she was carrying for another couple had severe medical problems. Click through the gallery to see how Kelley's gut-wrenching surrogacy story played out.

ITEM #2: Myanmar's bishops call for peace

"As a Church, we walk with our displaced people, watch their life being destroyed by war, their families fragmented by depressing life in the displaced camps," Bishop Francis Daw Tang of Myitkyina wrote on behalf of Myanmar's hierarchy.

ITEM #3: Over 1 million US women use morning-after pill every year

"Plan B, much like regular birth control, stops pregnancy by blocking the release of a woman's egg, or it may prevent fertilization or implantation in the uterus," the Reuters news agency reported. In preventing the implantation of a newly-conceived human being in the uterus, the morning-after pill, like other oral contraceptives, thus potentially acts as an abortifacient.

****************************************

ITEM #4: Pope says truth, not relativism, is source of non-violence

He attributed violence in the name of God to "human errors" and "the forgetfulness of God that immerses human societies in a form of relativism."

****************************************

ITEM #5: Born That Way?

The causes of homosexuality are infamously difficult to pin down. Science (in the American Psychological Association) and religion (in the Catechism of the Catholic Church) have agreed that, in the current state of things, there is no single cause to which we can definitively point and say, "Here, we have found it!"

****************************************

ITEM #6: Rebuttals to arguments for same-sex marriage

Perhaps no issue is more nerve-wracking today than same-sex marriage. It's a magnet for controversy, evoking strong reactions from those on either side of the debate. But beneath all the fiery passion and rhetoric, there are real arguments to evaluate. In this article, we'll examine the 10 most common ones made in favor of same-sex marriage, many of which you've probably heard before. By pointing out the flaws, we'll show how each argument ultimately comes up short.

ITEM #7 Family--and the constitution--first

A co-worker strolled away with Erin Mersino's baby while she was working at the Thomas More Law Center the other day. But the 31-year-old attorney was neither surprised nor worried. "Being a working mom, it is an incredible blessing that I don't have to miss my son's laughs, smiles, coos, and advancements. If he were at daycare, I would miss those moments which are quite fleeting," she said.

****************************************

ITEM #8: The Beating Heart Donors

They urinate. They have heart attacks and bedsores. They have babies. They may even feel pain. Meet the organ donors who are "pretty dead.

****************************************

ITEM #9: Super Exploitation: The Degrading of the Genius of Women

Never was that short-sighted axiom more evident than in the broadcast of the 2013 Super Bowl. As a woman with a daughter and a granddaughter, I was both insulted and saddened to see the demeaning portrayal of women in the commercials and the halftime show. I don't know exactly what GoDaddy.com does, but their marketing department is clearly hostile to smart women.

****************************************

ITEM #10: Alveda King: How Can Blacks Survive if We Murder Our Children?

I pray often for deliverance from the pain caused by my decision to abort my baby. I suffered the threat of cervical and breast cancer, and experienced the pain of empty arms after the baby was gone. Truly, for me, and countless abortive mothers, nothing on earth can fully restore what has been lost.

****************************************

ITEM #11: Australia: Push for abortion drugs to cost less than $12

The federal government will consider subsidising controversial abortion drugs - allowing women to end pregnancies for as little as $12. The drugs, known as Mifepristone Linepharma (RU486) and GyMiso were given approval by the Therapeutic Goods Administration to be imported into Australia last year. Both drugs are needed to complete the abortion process.

****************************************

ITEM #12: Assisted suicide's dangerous illusion of control

When you or your loved one goes to the hospital, you need to be able to trust that an assisted-suicide-minded doctor or nurse will not be steering you or them toward death.  People can be offered the illusion of control and autonomy when the choices are really being shaped by others.
