Lifeissues Newsletter #629

Lifeissues.net: clear thinking about crucial issues
Dear Friends for Life,

Broken Link: Last week, the link to ITEM #8 was broken for the article: "Why not buy and sell embryos, ask scholars in NEJM". The correct link is: http://lifeissues.net/writers/coo/coo_240sellembryos.html.

American Life League has released a major new video report entitled "Planned Parenthood's Corporate Carnage". The report demonstrates that abortionist Kermit Gosnell is not an isolated incident. Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion chain in America. Its latest annual report reveals that it committed over 332,000 abortions last year and received half of its $1 billion dollar budget from government subsidies at taxpayer expense. Watch the video here: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFAD9131EC38E3A22

Also there is an online poll asking: Should Michigan allow physician assisted suicide? You will find the question at the bottom of the article. Please vote:

(Life): "The Ten Commandments and Final Judgment"Dear Pro-life friends: Most pro-life veterans have come to realize the great need for teaching our own brothers and sisters in the faith, especially on topics such as the one contained in our new video. Please watch this 41 minute teaching and pass the link along to your friends. --Sincerely in Christ, Brian Murphy.

****************************************

ITEM #1: G.K. Chesterton: It's Not Gay, and It's Not Marriage

Chesterton was so consistently right in his pronouncements and prophecies because he understood that anything that attacked the family was bad for society.  That is why he spoke out against eugenics and contraception, against divorce and "free love" (another term he disliked because of its dishonesty), but also against wage slavery and compulsory state-sponsored education and mothers hiring other people to do what mothers were designed to do themselves.  It is safe to say that Chesterton stood up against every trend and fad that plagues us today because every one of those trends and fads undermines the family.

****************************************

ITEM #2: Fetuses found to have memories

The unborn have memories, according to medical researchers who used sound and vibration stimulation, combined with sonography, to reveal that the human fetus displays short-term memory from at least 30 weeks gestation - or about two months before they are born.
****************************************

ITEM #3:  Harvard Debate Stresses Meaning and Purpose of Marriage

Governments typically do not regulate intimate relationships such as friendships, he noted. Marriage is an exception, he said, because it is an institution that offers key services to society, namely the provision, care and education of a new generation of citizens. It is because of "the social need to promote those stabilizing norms" that governments oversee marriage, he explained.

****************************************

ITEM #4: Four Surreal Scenes

How is it that someone cannot see that abortion is wrong - wickedly wrong, horribly wrong, gruesomely wrong? How can there be anyone who does not know that a woman pregnant is a woman "with child," and that abortion, by "terminating the pregnancy," has destroyed a human life, an innocent baby human?
****************************************

ITEM #5: Redefining Marriage: A Battle Hundreds of Years in the Making

It is not to be wondered that "marriage," divorced from its social obligations, its orientation towards the future, and from its direction towards the other instead of the self, has now come to be demanded for same-sex couples. This is as regrettable as it was predictable.
****************************************
ITEM #6: The War on HIV
For years, the twin totems of sexual tolerance and cost effectiveness meant that the West's approach to the HIV/AIDS pandemic was to hand out condoms, withhold judgment about risky behavior, and watch Africans die.

****************************************

ITEM #7 Scientists Claim They Have Cloned Human Embryos for Stem Cells
Researchers in Oregon claimed they have succeeded in producing cloned human embryos and obtained their embryonic stem cells.
****************************************

ITEM #8: Daughters without fathers in early childhood more prone to teenage depression: study

Girls whose fathers were absent during the first five years of life are more likely than girls whose fathers become absent later in life (5-10 years old) to develop depressive symptoms in adolescence, or than boys in both age groups (0-5 and 5-10), even after a range of factors was taken into account, according to a new study.
****************************************

ITEM #9: Human cloning breakthrough prompts religious objections

Human cloning "treats human beings as products," O'Malley said on behalf of the bishops, "manufactured to order to suit other people's wishes. ... A technical advance in human cloning is not progress for humanity but its opposite."

****************************************

ITEM #10: Mother's Cuddles Bring Premature Baby Back To Life Two Hours After Death

Having given up on a miracle, Mrs Ogg unwrapped the baby from his blanket and held him against her skin. And then an extraordinary thing happened.
****************************************
ITEM #11: Kids start watching online porn as young as 6, flirt with cyberspace strangers by 8: survey
A recent study of 19,000 parents by online security company Bitdefender has found that children as young as six are watching online pornography, and by eight, they're flirting in real-time with strangers on the internet.
**************************************** ITEM #12: Infanticide and the Rational Soul, Part I: Michael Tooley and the Denial of Personhood
The GM argument for killing infants, as shocking as it sounds, is nothing more than a variation of a weak and weary but common philosophical argument going back to the 1980s denying that fetuses and newborns are "persons."
Infanticide and the Rational Soul, Part II: Michael Tooley and the Denial of Personhood
I proceeded to introduce an argument of Michael Tooley's against fetal and infant personhood found in the May 2013 issue. Tooley argues that since the concept of an immaterial soul is unsound, any argument against killing fetuses and infants that depends on the existence of such a soul is also unsound.
