Lifeissues Newsletter #627

Lifeissues.net: clear thinking about crucial issues
Dear Friends for Life,

TFP Student Action which defends moral values on campus asked us to share this video "Best 2-Minute Defense of God's Marriage by Skateboarder."

When the man featured in this interview came rolling down the sidewalk on his skateboard, he saw our signs promoting God's marriage, stopped, and accepted a copy of our handout, 10 Reasons Why Same-Sex "Marriage" Is Harmful and Must Be Opposed. He was happy to share his candid thoughts on camera. His common sense is contagious.

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

(The Difference is LIFE) "Societies that have come down on the side of life have generally thrived, their citizens enjoying a better chance of living good and fulfilling lives. Societies that have chosen to disregard the basic right to life have almost universally broken down into chaos and cynicism. Chaos like the kind we’ve seen in recent acts of senseless mass violence . . .
The fight for the right to life is so much bigger than the media will admit . . . it’s also about what kind of society we and our children will spend our lives in. Can we trust that our laws and customs and popular culture will nurture the value of each of the people we care about - young and old? Or are we just disposable "products," liable to be killed or left to die because an abortionist, or a terrorist, or a bureaucrat trying to cut costs in a national health care program wants us dead?" - Carol Tobias (NRL)

(Abortion): "Our most SHOCKING investigative video yet, in the 'Inhuman' series. Watch it now!"From Kermit Gosnell's "House of Horrors" to the "meat-market style of assembly-line abortions" in Delaware, America's abortion industry has come under a spotlight it's long struggled to avoid. To see how prevalent the horrifying conditions and practices now hitting the airwaves are, Live Action went undercover in late-term abortion clinics across the country. -Live Action Website.

ITEM #1: Homosexuality: Yes, I Am Surprised

Two people of the same sex may also experience real affection for each other, but the moment they attempt to express this affection genitally so as to have physical closeness, they have destroyed the friendship: their bodies do not 'fit' and their attempt to seize physical closeness genitally is necessarily a lie and will always lead to frustration. Nor can this disordered and unnatural genital attempt at physical closeness ever yield the begetting of new human life.

****************************************

ITEM #2: Attacking the Roots of Abortion

What is really required ... is to address the thought processes and motivations that prompt people to seek abortion as a solution to a personal problem that should not have occurred in the first place.
****************************************

ITEM #3:  "Real Women Don't Like Lust" (Part 1)

There should be no such thing as a "sex life". There is "married life" and within it, the many expressions of love which includes the renewal of the wedding vows.

****************************************

ITEM #4: Part I: Does Emergency Contraception Cause Early Abortions?

At the end of February, the Catholic bishops of Germany released a statement saying that women who are victims of rape should receive care at Catholic hospitals in Germany as a matter of course and that "this can include the administration of a 'morning-after pill' to the extent that is has a preventative and not an abortifacient effect." They stated clearly that medications "that cause the death of an embryo still may not be used."
****************************************

ITEM #5: Part II: Do Emergency Contraceptive Medications Cause Early Abortions?

In the first part of this essay, I outlined two conflicting opinions of conscientious Catholic thinkers on the question of whether Plan B causes early abortions. This second part summarizes the views of a secular authority on EC, James Trussell, and then sets forth my own conclusion on the issue.

ITEM #6: FDA Approves Sale of Plan B Morning After Pill to Teenagers
The FDA made it official today saying the morning after pill known as Plan B should be available without a prescription for teenagers starting at age 15.
*** Pediatricians: Emergency Contraception - Not Best For Adolescents

****************************************

ITEM #7 'Flush it' Down the Toilet
How does humanity get to the point where a person can actually feel comfortable telling another human being to flush her baby down the toilet? This sickening remark, and the mentality behind it, are permeating our society. As we see more and more houses of horror, we realize just how unconcerned most people are about human life, and we have to wonder how bad it will get.
*** Are Gosnell's Coldblooded Acts a Logical Result?
****************************************

ITEM #8: Fewer births in Japan for the 32nd year in a row

On Children's Day, the government says that the number of children under 15 years of age fell by 150,000 in a year. A mix of consumerism, focus on career and Shintoism are behind the drop and threaten the nation's economic well-being.
****************************************

ITEM #9: Does IVF turn children into consumer products to be bought and sold?

Infertility can be one of the most heartbreaking trials a couple undergo. Wanting to bear your own children is a desire felt by the vast majority of mankind, so when someone is unsuccessful in becoming pregnant, the natural reaction is to find a way to do so using the medical advances available today. One of those is in-vitro fertilization (IVF). And while there are many ethical concerns surrounding IVF, one in particular troubles me: the fact that IVF turns children into designer products to be engineered and sold - and then discarded, if they're found to be "defective" in some way.

****************************************

ITEM #10: Top bioethicists defend killing babies after birth this week in leading medical journal

Writing in the Journal of Medical Ethics (JME), Alberto Giubilini and Francesca Minerva argued in 'After-birth abortion: why should the baby live?', that foetuses and newborns 'do not have the same moral status as actual persons'. They concluded that 'after birth abortion (killing a newborn) should be permissible in all the cases where abortion is, including cases where the newborn is not disabled'.

ITEM #11: So-Called Gay Marriage: A Dialogue
I'd been tied up with students all morning. No sooner did student number ten leave than student number eleven appeared. It was Theresa.
*** Gay marriage: Catholics plan wave of 'grassroots' protests
*** Anti-gay marriage protests prompt ire of the BBC

*** Hope for the Gay Undergrad

**************************************** ITEM #12: Porn and the contemplative life
There's a lot on the line here. De Botton points out that porn is not just a powerful distraction; it's increasingly an easy one, and our lives are demonstrably worse off for indulging. We leave our souls unattended, our hearts uncultivated.
