Dear Friends for Life,
Christmas Holidays are just around the corner as we celebrate the 3rd Sunday of Advent. As we prepare for this great day, let us give thanks to the Baby Jesus for becoming human like us and walking with us 24-7 as we combat the Culture of Death. Only His strength and love will change hearts and minds so that the Culture of Life will flourish. Only our prayers and perseverance focused on this Child can we participate on this important journey.
New Study Confirms Abortion Breast Cancer Link - A new study out of China has reported that woman having abortions increase their risk of breast cancer by 44%, the strongest link to date. Published in the international cancer journal, Cancer Causes and Control, the meta-analysis study looked at all 36 studies on the abortion breast cancer link that have been published through 2012. Dr. Yubei Huang et al. found a 44% increased chance of breast cancer among woman who had at least one abortion, and increasing with subsequent abortions (76% risk increase with two or more abortions, 89% risk increase with three or more abortions). The China study offers the strongest evidence to date of the link between breast cancer and abortion, disproving abortion advocates who have long claimed there is no connection.
Euthanasia: New Group Unites Europeans - A new coalition, the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition Europe, (EPC-Europe), has been launched to defend against the mounting push for euthanasia throughout Europe. The coalition unites groups and individuals across Europe to oppose efforts to change laws and policies regarding euthanasia and assisted suicide. The group will focus on efforts underway now to legalize euthanasia and highlight the slippery slope underway in Belgium and the Netherlands where it is currently permitted. "EPC-Europe brings people from a wide variety of backgrounds together to oppose the legalisation of euthanasia and assisted suicide, promote the best care and support for vulnerable people and to help people to find meaning, purpose and hope in the face of suffering and despair.
God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI
(The Difference is LIFE) - "How beautiful it would be if each of you, every evening, could say: Today at school, at home, at work, guided by God, I showed a sign of love towards one of my friends, my parents, an older person! How beautiful!." - Pope Francis.

ITEM #1: Patient in So-Called "Vegetative State" Knew Doctors Were Dehydrating Him to Death
We dehydrate to death helpless people to death in this country because they have a catastrophic cognitive impairment. Advocates for dehydration say it is just medical ethics, the withdrawal of the medical treatment of tube feeding. (Now, there is even a lawsuit to compel starvation by withholding spoon feeding–not a medical treatment!) Dehydrating helpless people to death was once unthinkable. Then, in the 80s, bioethicists began advocating withdrawing tube-supplied food and fluids. And so it came to pass.

ITEM #2: Belgium: Senate Panel Approves Measure Allowing Doctors to Euthanize Children
A Belgian Senate committee voted today to extend euthanasia to children with disabilities, in a move pro-life advocates worldwide had been fearing would come and expand an already much-abused euthanasia law even further.
'Insanity': Belgian Senate Passes Bill Permitting Doctors To Euthanize Children
****************************** **********
ITEM #3: From a horrific rape, a priceless 'diamond in the rough': Monica's story
The 17-year-old woman had been terrorized, humiliated and crushed by what had happened to her. She had been raped. Now, to make matters worse, she was pregnant. Her mother had forced her to visit a back alley abortionist, to solve "the problem." But at the last moment, Sandy decided not to go through with the illegal procedure.

ITEM #4: Dignity and Vocation of Women (series of five articles)
Part I: Let it Be Done Unto Me: the Vulnerability of Assent
Part II: The Meaning of Motherhood
Part III: Motherhood and a New Sort of Women's Movement
Part IV: New Feminism & Motherhood Since Mulieris Dignitatem: Gains Made & Challenges Ahead
Part V: American Women, Catholic Teaching, and the Culture Wars
****************************** **********
ITEM #5: Long-Term Oral Contraceptive Users are Twice as Likely to Have Serious Eye Disease
Research presented today, at the 117th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in New Orleans, has found that women who have taken oral contraceptives for three or more years are twice as likely to suffer from glaucoma, one of the leading causes of blindness which affects nearly 60 million worldwide.
****************************** **********
ITEM #6: Chastity: What are you saying YES to?
Chastity is a virtue that each baptized person is called to live no matter what his or her vocation. Chastity is more about what you are doing than about what you aren't doing. It is SO MUCH MORE than merely abstaining from sex and remaining a "technical virgin." Chastity is actually at the heart of a good marriage. So if chastity is lived even after marriage, then it has to be more than just saying NO to sex.
****************************** **********
ITEM #7 Dutch Doctors Intentionally Ovedose Patients to Euthanize Them, Then Hide the Deaths
How do Dutch doctors kill? Let me count the ways: Dutch euthanasia statistics are bogus. Always were.
****************************** **********
ITEM #8: Seven Deadly Fallacies in Pro-Abortion Argument
It's said that nobody is pro-abortion. Even so, the arguments for choice are flimsy at best, and proponents of the "right to choose" position frequently ignore their own logical lapses.
****************************** **********
ITEM #9: 2014 - a special year for the family
Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the International Year of the Family, a United Nations observance which many voluntary groups hope will prod governments towards greater recognition of the social importance of the family. The 75 million youth who are unemployed around the world have reason to understand that.
****************************** **********
ITEM #10: Nearly Two-thirds Of Gay Men Who Know They Have AIDS Have Sex Without Condoms: CDC Report
According to the report, the percentage of men with HIV/AIDS having sex with other men without a condom had increased from 55 percent in 2005, to 57 percent in 2008, to 62 percent today.
****************************** **********
ITEM #11: What does Blessed Miguel Pro have in common with victims of abortion?
The intent behind displaying graphic abortion pictures is the same, for it puts a human face on the victims of what is, for far too many people, merely a theoretical concept or political issue.
****************************** **********
ITEM #12: VIDEO: "180" What Changed Their Minds? [graphic Content Warning Re World War II Photos]
[Note: This is an excellent video sent to me by a philosopher colleague, recently demonstrating how just a little bit of logic can change minds, even about highly controversial issues -- especially relevant these days when students are taught only how to "feel" and "imagine", but rarely how to think rationally and logically. (E.g., "If A then B, if B then C, therefore if A then C"!). Even with our college and grad students I and other professors found that we had to constantly "push the logic" for them, as they really didn't know how to do it themselves.
This video starts off with arguments about one thing and ends by using those same arguments about another thing -- by "pushing the logic" for the mostly young people interviewed and questioned. It was especially poignant for me because my thesis as a biochemistry major was the scientific validity of the "twins" research of Dr. Josef Mengele -- given that the first ethical principle of the international Nuremberg Code was that the science used in research experiments must be accurate, and the researchers must be academically qualified in the specific area being addressed in the experiment. I spent over 18 months at the Library of Congress pouring over the original photos and videos (some used in this current video) as they were flooding into the Library -- including raw photos of the actual "twins" I used for my thesis -- one of whom I was to meet personally many years later at a bioethics conference at which she presented. The graphic photos shown in this video are true and accurate. FYI, as an example of what "pushing that logic" did for me later as I tried to decide on the topic for my doctoral dissertation, I am copying for you below, and attaching to this email, my article, "Me and Mengele". -- Dianne N. Irving, M.A., Ph.D.]
