White House Already Missing Deadlines in Implementing Pro-Abortion Health Care

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Critics say missed deadlines and other signs show the Obama administration is stumbling out of the gate on its early steps to implement the president s health-care law, reports the Daily Caller.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has already missed as many as four deadlines under the law though not on any major regulations.

Congressional staff and industry representatives have also been asking HHS for a timeline specifying when it will issue the numerous regulations required by the law. They were shocked to find the agency has not produced such a document, one aide said.

The issue is important because vast industry sectors are trying to plan their own implementations of the health-care law and most of the details remain in bureaucrats hands, leaving a vacuum of uncertainty about the final burdens the law will impose.

The missed deadlines include creating task forces on breast cancer and Alaskan health care, publishing a list of new authorities granted under the law, and setting a schedule for a Government Accountability Office study and financial audit.

HHS spokeswoman Jessica Santillo noted the administration had already implemented numerous parts of the health care law in advance of deadlines.

Marie Stopes Abortion Business Opening Centers in China using UK Tax Funds

Beijing, China (LifeNews.com) -- Marie Stopes International, the British-based abortion business that upset local residents in the UK with its television ads promoting abortion, is facing more criticism for using UK taxpayers money to fund the opening of abortion clinics in China.

MSI does 65,000 abortions a year in Britain, most of them through NHS contracts for which it receives £30m a year, according to media reports.

Money left over from the NHS cash is used in the group s international division, which announced earlier this year it did 920,000 abortions in 43 countries in 2009.

MSI has opened five clinics in China s eastern province of Jiangsu and plans are afoot to create three more.

According to the Christian Institute, Labour MP Kate Hoey said: I don't see why British taxpayers money via the NHS should in any way be supporting Chinese government policies.

It s very sad that an organization like Marie Stopes doesn't reflect more on the grotesque human rights abuses that take place there," Hoey added.

Canada Rethinking Pro-Rationing Socialized Medicine Because of Rising Costs

Ottawa, Canada (LifeNews.com) -- Pressured by an aging population and the need to rein in budget deficits, Canada s provinces are taking tough measures to curb healthcare costs, a trend that could erode the principles of the socialized medicine system that has produced long waits and rationing of care.

British Columbia is replacing block grants to hospitals with fee-for-procedure payments and Quebec has a new flat health tax and a proposal for payments on each medical visit an idea that critics say is an illegal user fee.

And a few provinces are also experimenting with private funding for procedures such as hip, knee and cataract surgery.

It s likely just a start as the provinces, responsible for delivering healthcare, cope with the demands of a retiring baby-boom generation. Official figures show that senior citizens will make up 25 percent of the population by 2036.

Conservative writer Ed Morrissey of Hot Air commented on the news.

"American fans of single-payer health care have long held Canada as an example of success in both providing health care and controlling costs. Canadians have more reason to question both, however, especially the latter. The provinces, which bear a significant portion of those costs, may end some services and curtail others as ballooning costs have exposed the cradle-to-grave system as unsustainable," he noted.

Man Appears Free of HIV After Rare Full Transplant Involving Adult Stem Cells

Berlin, Germany (LifeNews.com) -- A 42-year-old HIV patient with leukemia appears to have no detectable HIV in his blood and no symptoms after a stem cell transplant from a donor carrying a gene mutation that confers natural resistance to the virus that causes AIDS, according to a report published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine.

"The patient is fine," said Dr. Gero Hutter of Charite Universitatsmedizin Berlin in Germany. "Today, two years after his transplantation, he is still without any signs of HIV disease and without antiretroviral medication."

The case was first reported in November, and the new report is the first official publication of the case in a medical journal. Hutter and a team of medical professionals performed the stem cell transplant on the patient, an American living in Germany, to treat the man's leukemia, not the HIV itself.

However, the team deliberately chose a compatible donor who has a naturally occurring gene mutation that confers resistance to HIV. The mutation cripples a receptor known as CCR5, which is normally found on the surface of T cells, the type of immune system cells attacked by HIV.

Draft of Canadian G8 Document Contains No Endorsement of Abortion for Women

Ottawa, Canada (LifeNews.com) -- A leaked draft of the final paper for the coming G8 summit suggests Canada will not suggest to other nations that promoting abortion is the best way to help reduce maternal mortality.

The draft, obtained by The Canadian Press, shows the world's most powerful countries are prepared to throw money at "all factors" affecting the health of women and children in poor countries, but it doesn't specifically mention abortion.

The Harper government has been under fire for insisting it will not fund abortion as part of its G8 maternal health plan, now known as the "Muskoka Initiative."

"Action is required on all factors that affect the health of women and children," the document says. "This includes addressing gender inequality, ensuring women's and children's rights and improving education for women and girls."

Instead of singling out abortion for funding, the document refers only to the need to strengthen "voluntary family planning," likely giving the harper government what it needs to sidestep the abortion debate.

India Abortion practitioner Arrested After Woman Dies From Botched Abortion

New Delhi, India (LifeNews.com) -- An abortion practitioner was arrested after a woman, who underwent an abortion at her clinic, bled to death.

A 37-year-old woman named Gita was admitted to the clinic at Khora colony for the abortion on Tuesday. However, the doctor, Bina Sharma, who performed the abortion , could not control the bleeding and referred Gita to a hospital in Delhi, SP (City) AK Vijeta told the New Delhi newspaper.

The family members of the woman rushed her to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in Delhi where she died on Wednesday.

Following her death, Gita's family members damaged hospital property and lodged a complaint with police.

This is one of several recent legal abortion deaths in India in recent months.

In January, an India doctor was arrested in a newly-reported case of a botched abortion that killed a woman. The Times of India indicated the Vikhroli police recently registered a case of medical malpractice against Dr. Vinod Ganpati Prabhu.

Michelle Duggar Backs Pro-Life Arkansas Congressional Candidate Cecile Bledsoe

Little Rock, AR (LifeNews.com) -- TLC star Michelle Duggar has endorsed pro-life congressional candidate Cecile Bledsoe in a new automated phone call to GOP voters in the district recorded for the Susan B. Anthony List, a pro-life women's group. "Hello, I'm Michelle Duggar, and I'm the mother of 19 children," the call begins.

Duggar stars with her husband, Jim Bob Duggar, in "19 Kids and Counting," a reality TV show that chronicles the couple's very large Christian family, all 19 of whom are the Duggars' biological children.

Bledsoe is a Republican primary candidate in Arkansas's 3rd congressional district, where the Duggars live. Bledsoe, like Duggar, strongly opposes abortion.

Arkansas 3rd district is an open seat race, as pro-life Rep. John Boozman (R-Ark.) is running for Senate.

Next Tuesday, Bledsoe will take on Rogers Mayor Steve Womack (R) in a GOP primary runoff. Womack finished 20 points ahead of the former state senator in a May primary, and whoever wins the primary runoff is expected to replace Boozman in the strongly Republican district.

Indiana Pro-Life Republican Dan Coats Leads Democratic Rep. Brad Ellsworth

Indianapolis, IN (LifeNews.com) -- Republican Dan Coats, a pro-life former U.S. Senate member, runs ahead of his Democratic opponent, Congressman Brad Ellsworth, in Indiana s U.S. Senate race. Ellsworth upset pro-life advocates by saying he is pro-life but voting for the pro-abortion health care bill.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in Indiana released on Friday shows Coats with 47% support, down from 51% just after his GOP state Primary win last month. Ellsworth picks up 33% of the vote, while seven percent (7%) prefer another candidate and 14% are undecided.

In the previous survey, just eight percent (8%) were undecided.

Coats support in match-ups with Ellsworth grew from 46% in February to a peak of 54% in April. This is the second straight monthly decline in support for the GOP nominee.

Ellsworth s support since the beginning of the year has remained in the narrow range of 32% to 36%.

Coats attracts 83% support from Republicans while Ellsworth earns 70% of the vote from Democrats. Voters not affiliated with either party break roughly even between the two candidates.

Concerned Women for America Backs Pro-Life Jim Gibbons in Iowa Race

Des Moines, IA (LifeNews.com) -- The Concerned Women Political Action Committee (CWPAC) has announced its endorsement of pro-life advocate Jim Gibbons in his campaign for Congress in Iowa s 3rd District.

Iowa s 3rd Congressional District is currently held by Leonard L. Boswell, who was first elected to the seat in 1996. Rep. Boswell recently voted for government take over of health care while refusing to vote in favor an amendment that would have prohibited abortion coverage.

Overall, Congressman Boswell has voted against the Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee position eighty-one times out of one hundred twenty-nine votes tracked.

Jim Gibbons is a husband, father, businessman, and former wrestling coach at Iowa State. For nearly two decades, he has worked in the financial services industry in Des Moines, most recently as a Vice President with Wells Fargo. Jim and Anne Gibbons have been married for 21 years and have three children.

Jim Gibbons is pro-life, pro-family and a fiscal conservative says Penny Nance, CEO of Concerned Women PAC. With his business background and commitment to conservative values, Jim is exactly the kind of man we want in Congress.

Wisconsin Right to Life Continues "Pass it On" Campaign with father's Day Video

Madison, WI (LifeNews.com) -- Wisconsin Right to Life continues its Pass it On campaign with a Fatherhood in Hollywood video which can be found at http://www.wrtl.org/passthison This is a three minute collection of popular movie clips depicting strong father figures.

Many families today are fatherless and have no strong male role models for the children, said Barbara Lyons, Executive Director of Wisconsin Right to Life. And it has been documented that women who become pregnant and do not have the support of the father are more likely to have an abortion, especially if they have already had other children by the same father.

There are a lot of positive messages in cyberspace, said Lyons. We want to highlight the good and move the messages across the globe, especially as we approach Father s Day.

Lyons encourages anyone with positive cyber stories to pass them on to her at http://www.wrtl.org

Judge Denies Petition to George Tiller Killer Scott Roeder over Prison Treatment

Wichita, KS (LifeNews.com) -- A Sedgwick County judge has dismissed Scott Roeder's petition complaining about jail conditions and seeking to be released. Judge Timothy Henderson considered the habeas corpus petition requiring a judge determine whether the government can continue to hold a prisoner.

The court docket shows Roeder filed the initial paperwork himself in February. Judge Henderson dismissed it at the request of Roeder's court-appointed attorney, Michael Brown.

Henderson ruled after a brief hearing that the petition is moot because it complains of conditions at the Sedgwick County jail. Roeder is now being held at the state prison in El Dorado, and the Sedgwick County court has no jurisdiction in that county.
