Gingrich, Bachmann Spar on Abortion in Republican Debate
Newt Gingrich and Michele Bachmann sparred on the issue of abortion in Thursday night s Republican debate with Bachmann making an accusation that Gingrich did not fully support pro-life efforts in Congress.

All right. Congresswoman Bachmann, you say that Speaker Gingrich has a, quote, inconsistent record on life and you singled out comments he made recently that life begins with the implantation of a fertilized egg, not at conception. What is your concern? a Fox News panelist asked her.

Bachmann responded, Well, my concern is the fact that the Republican Party can t get the issue of life wrong. This is a basic part of our party. Just last night we gathered in Des Moines to talk about this issue, because it s that crucial to our party. And one of the concerns that I had is that when Speaker Gingrich was Speaker of the House he had an opportunity to de-fund Planned Parenthood. And he chose not to take it. That is a big issue.

However, Bachmman s claim is misleading in that the issue of de-funding Planned Parenthood did not come up until recent years and in the 1990s during Gingrich s time as Speaker the main votes taken in the House were on stopping direct taxpayer funding of abortions in various instances in federal government programs. On those votes, Gingrich consistently maintained a 100% pro-life voting record concerning stopping domestic or foreign abortion funding of funding of pro-abortion groups. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/12/16/gingrich-bachmann-spar-on-abortion-in-republican-debate/

House OKs Spending Bill Cutting Planned Parenthood, UNFPA $
The House voted 296-121 today for a spending bill that makes small cuts to funds for Planned Parenthood and the UNFPA, which promotes abortion and works with the Chinese population control officials.

Although some members wanted bigger cuts, pro-abortion Senate Democrats and pro-abortion President Barack Obama would not accept them.

H.R. 3671, the consolidated appropriations, bill retains all of the current pro-life riders including provisions making it so the District of Columbia will not be able to fund abortions with federal taxpayer dollars. The policy is credited with saving the lives of hundreds of unborn children in the nation s capital.

DC Vote, an organization that lobbies for expanded D.C. autonomy, protested the rider and urged lawmakers to remove the provision. DC Vote urges everyone who is sick and tired of Congressional interference to attend, the group said in a statement about a rally and press conference to complain.

Eleanor Holmes Norton, the pro-abortion D.C. delegate, complained about the pro-life provision as she normally does. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/12/16/house-oks-spending-bill-cutting-planned-parenthood-unfpa/

Obama s Push to Legalize Abortion in Kenya Broke U.S. Law
I want to update you on Pres. Obama s promotion of abortion in Kenya. The Obama Administration used $18 million in taxpayer funds to provide funding for a group pushing legalized abortion in Kenya violated federal law, an investigation by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has found.

The report by the GAO, the investigative arm of Congress, shows at least one Obama grantee openly pushed to expand abortion in Kenya despite the Siljander Amendment, a longstanding, annually renewed law that prohibits U.S. tax dollars from being used to lobby for or against abortion in other countries.

The GAO report also reveals that a key Obama official stonewalled investigators and refused to cooperate with the GAO in its investigation of the activities initiated by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the State Department during Kenya s 2010 constitutional referendum.

The Obama Administration basically hired surrogates to do its dirty work of abortion promotion in Kenya, said Congressman Chris Smith, a pro-life New Jersey Republican who chairs the House Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health and Human Rights. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/12/16/obamas-push-to-legalize-abortion-in-kenya-broke-u-s-law/

Romney Defends His Pro-Life Conversion During GOP Debate
During Thursday night s Republican debate, presidential candidate Mitt Romney was asked about his conversion from a pro-abortion to a pro-life position during the waning days of his administration as Massachusetts governor.

With regards to abortion, I changed my mind. With regards to abortion, I had the experience of coming in to office, running for governor, saying, you know, I m going to keep the laws as they exist in the state, Romney said in response to a question from the Fox News panel. And they were pro-choice laws, so effectively I was pro-choice.

Romney relayed again how confronting the issue of embryonic stem cell research and the purposeful creation and destruction of human embryos unique human beings days after conception prompted him to reconsider his position.

Then I had a bill come to my desk that didn t just keep the laws as they were, but would have created new embryos for the purpose of destroying them. I studied it in some depth and concluded I simply could not sign on to take human life. I vetoed that bill, Romney said.

I went to the to the Boston Globe. I described for them why I am pro-life. Every decision I took as governor was taken on the side of life. I am firmly pro-life, he said. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/12/16/romney-defends-his-pro-life-conversion-during-gop-debate/

Batman Star Christian Bale Attacked for Visiting Chen Guangcheng
Batman movie star Christian Bale traveled nine hours from Beijing to visit blind forced abortion opponent Chen Guangcheng, who has been sentenced to home confinement by local Chinese family planning officials.

Bale never got the chance. He was roughed up and forced away from Chen s village, according to a CNN report. Bale was in Beijing, China for the premier of The Flowers of War, a drama about the 1937 Rape of Nanjing and he decided to break away from the official visit to try to find Chen, who exposed massive campaigns of forced abortions and sterilizations of thousands to the western world several years ago.

Chen was eventually imprisoned for nearly four years on bogus charges and he has repeatedly been beaten and attacked by family planning officials enforcing the nation s one-child policy since his release. Reports surfaced in recent weeks that Chen had been killed and then new reports claimed he was still alive.

About his attempt to visit Chen, Bale stated, I m not brave doing this . . . This was just a situation I can t look the other way.

What I really wanted to do was shake the man s hand and say thank you, and tell him what an inspiration he is, Bale said. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/12/16/batman-star-christian-bale-attacked-for-visiting-chen-guangcheng/

Like Terri Schiavo, PVS Misdiagnosis Kills Patients
Having to stand by and witness the intentional death of a loved one is a helpless torture. Having most of the globe tuned in to your unimaginable situation exasperates the feeling even more.

I should know, since it was my family and I who tried to save my sister, Terri Schiavo, from being starved and dehydrated to death while the world watched.

People thought that Terri didn t know what was happening because they wrongly believed much of the media reports that said she was in a persistent vegetative state (PVS). But my family always knew that my sister was aware of what was happening, and now yet another new study reveals we were right.

The Lancet, a well-respected medical journal, recently published a groundbreaking study that shows that many patients claimed to be in a PVS are misdiagnosed. Further, the study proved that many of these patients have a much higher level of consciousness than otherwise thought.

Although these findings are certainly welcome, particularly to family members who care for their cognitively disabled loved ones and already know their loved ones are not in a PVS, they are not entirely unique. There have been several other studies revealing the same. In addition, many physicians have known for years that patients diagnosed to be in a PVS were, in reality, misdiagnosed. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/12/16/like-terri-schiavo-pvs-misdiagnosis-kills-patients/

My Abortion, My Life Attempt to Destigmatize Abortion
We found out recently about a new campaign called My Abortion, My Life. Based in Cleveland, they ve recently placed ads on the city s buses as part of their effort to start the long process of wait for it de-stigmatizing abortion in our society.

Campaigns like this that set out to normalize abortion are doomed to fail.

Why? Because they ve always failed. And there s no reason to believe things won t be different this time.

Fliers Claiming Newt Not Pro-Life Falsely Use Group s Name
As more than 1,000 pro-life Iowans watched the premier of the new pro-life movie Gift of Life this week and heard from the GOP presidential candidates about their plans to oppose abortion if elected, someone misused the name of a prominent Iowa pro-life group to disseminate fliers attacking Newt Gingrich. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/12/16/fliers-claiming-newt-not-pro-life-falsely-use-groups-name/

Room at the Inn: Pro-Lifers Care for Mother and Child
I was 29 years old and unexpectedly pregnant. After days of torment from my family and no reply from the father-to-be I felt ashamed and alone, and led to believe that abortion was the fix to my problem. It didn t matter how I felt or what I thought. I was just told to drop the subject and drop the baby as soon as possible. I made an appointment at a local clinic and went by cab, all by myself. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/12/16/room-at-the-inn-pro-lifers-care-for-mother-and-child/

Study Reveals How Pregnancy Can Help Fight Heart Disease
From the Gawker science blog io9 comes a particularly cool revelation about pregnancy that might seem apolitical at first glance, but holds powerful implications for one of the abortion movement s more callous talking points. http://www.lifenews.com/2011/12/16/study-reveals-how-pregnancy-can-help-fight-heart-disease/
