Baltimore, MD – Pro-lifers that had hoped to see abortionist Romeo Ferrer disciplined for the 2006 abortion-related death of a 21-year old woman will have to wait longer for justice.
Wednesday's disciplinary hearing conducted by the Maryland Board of Physicians was only a subcommittee action, according to a representative of the MBP who spoke with Operation Rescue.
"I was told that if an agreement was made, it would still have to be sent to the full Board for a hearing. If no agreement was made, the case could be scheduled before an administrative law judge for hearing. In any event, this matter is far from final resolution," said Cheryl Sullenger, Operation Rescue's Senior Policy Advisor.
"This is a case that has drug on for over four years. We are not talking about some minor infraction, but the death of a woman during a second trimester abortion. Women who continue to patronize the Ferrer's Gynecare Center abortion clinic do not even know that their lives could be in danger from substandard care and conditions. It is shocking that a case involving a woman's death would not be swiftly resolved."
According to a petition filed by the MBP on April 7, 2010, a healthy 21-year old African American woman went to Gynecare Center on February 3, 2006, for a second trimester dilation and evacuation abortion. She was 16 weeks pregnant and was the mother of a 3-year old son. She was given a fatal overdose of meperidine, a narcotic also known as Demerol. The patient's vital signs were not properly monitored, and resuscitation efforts were inadequate.
This is the second time Ferrer's negligence had come before the MBP. Operation Rescue uncovered disciplinary documents that show a pattern of misdeeds that date back over 20 years. In 1992, Ferrer was disciplined for his incompetence that involved botched abortions and other surgical procedures, including an incident where he knowingly sewed a metal surgical instrument into a patient. He was placed on supervised probation, which he completed in 1994.
"This is yet another National Abortion Federation abortionist who is endangering the lives of women with his shoddy services," said Sullenger. "NAF standards would be considered a joke if the consequences of their slipshod operations were not so deadly."
Operation Rescue encourages the public to contact the Maryland Board of Physicians and ask them to expedite case against Romeo Ferrer in the interest of public safety.
