| “Let us not test Christ as some of them did, and suffered death by serpents. Do not grumble as some of them did, and suffered death by the destroyer.” | 1 Corinthians 10:9-10 March 3, 2013 Third Sunday of Lent Dear John, I believe it was St. Teresa of Avila who once said, “It is all right to complain, but don’t grumble.” Good and solid advice! Maybe it should become a part of our Lenten observance. In other words, we can and should be critical, but we should not murmur or grumble. There is a difference! In the Scripture, St. Paul explains that the people of Israel were grumbling amid their setbacks and difficulties. This is not creative or constructive. It is to protest in a bad-tempered or muted way. So let’s ask the Holy Spirit to guide us, and give us wisdom to be positive, constructive and even optimistic in the midst of troubles. | Lord God, teach us to sacrifice our likings for the sake of doing good. Make us kind in thought, gentle in word, generous in deed. Teach us that it is better to give than to receive; better to forget ourselves than to put ourselves forward; better to serve than be served. And unto You, God of love, be glory and praise for ever.
